  1. lol yeah - on newsforge.com someone commented immediately after the article as if IBM should follow up with "How d'ya like me, now, biatch!"
  2. Andrewski: Be sure to read this howto and The best way to partition with Windows before starting (and print them out to have with you; IMPORTANT FOR NEWBIES!). What I did was download it, then I ended up loving it so much I donated money to mandrake. However, when I think about it, it probably would have been wiser to buy it in a store instead of donate, because I would have received more, given the store another linux sale, and received a cool box :)
  3. Well, yeah, but root kits get you in as root, meaning the file's perms do no good. There is no substitute for a good firewall. My personal favorite is Guarddog because it's relatively easy and very effective. (mods - shouldn't this be in security?)
  4. update: Please tell me if my following clarification is correct: Compile with all the kde libs statically linked, then have the KIO lib and DCOP binary installed on the machine to be able to run what you compiled. Is that it?
  5. tyme suspected that all kde software needs some dcops server running or something... I know to compile some kde apps you need libs, but if I were to install a system with just fluxbox and no dcops server thingy do you think that KDE apps would run? (Krusader specifically, but curious for kppp, guarddog, too)
  6. :!: A dhcp server can't assign itself an IP (another dhcp server would be needed) > Give it a static IP. Then your NIC (network interface card) will be able to find the dhcp server when it broadcasts asking for an IP for itself.
  7. For the samba setup readonly is no, but I'll have to check about your first point, thanks.
  8. TTimo ? Anyway - didn't mean to misquote Reznor, all he had said was they're trying their hardest to make it the most unpleasant place to be. Someone else (Carmack?) said they keep adding the cool stuff... I don't think Reznor left, he probably just finished the soundtrack and went on his [merry??] way. He wasn't involved with sound effects or anything. They have a new guy devoted to sound (first time in id's history they have a guy just for sound) because it's in 6.1 surround!! <drool>
  9. Are you agreeing that they suck or that we should use them for compatibility reasons? I value your opinion, as I'm sure tyme and the rest do.
  10. I like everything you have to say (except that xbox part still baffles me - 1) we all already have computers and 2) you're the guy with the good idea to keep it simple! And I don't have $199 for m$) One thing though > Well, if it's our distro, why not pick the favorite? The "best solution" as you say is only what is best for you anyway - for example neither tyme nor I want the whole kde/gnome luggage even if they do provide all sorts of goodies. So, to agree with Gowator, what if we chop down version 0.1 to [*]XFree86 with Fluxbox [*]Rxvt [*]krusader equiv that doesn't need kde libs to be compiled [*]CDBakeOven or eroaster [*]xine, ogle, xmms, + a cd player [*]Gaim, Mozilla firebird [*]Autopackage or apt-get or rpm [*]Network stuff [*]Custom config GUI c_m_f -> You have good ideas but KDE/Gnome distros are done to death already; I seriously believe no one can dethrone mandrake for ease of use. Newbies shouldn't use a distro created by college students ;0) We don't want to throw in everything because there's distros better than ours will be that are already like that. It's kinda like XPde.com - looks good, but then why use linux, right? Why use ours if it's exactly like the rest?
  11. OK tyme - did you read my post?? <:D It sounds like you have the exact same ideas as me but didn't bother reading my post ! LOL j/k This is hilarious. Two weeks ago I read a shitload on LFS, a while before that I was trying out keeper linux which taught me a lot about live cd's and el turrito. Sounds like we were meant to be tyme. (Oh, and don't let sarah31 discourage you - it'll take us a while, but we'd have a lot of appreciated help) I know a lot of C and C++, as well as kylix for nice linux GUI apps like a config center. I have to say, though, that coming up with our own packaging tool is not only a shot in the foot because everyone be limited to what we added to the package tree, but that leaves LSB in the dust. Like sarah, I'm all for standards, and like sarah, don't know about some of the LSB's decisions (especially rpm >:| ) but it would be really nice to have that opengroup symbol on the cover :) I'd like to support the LSB idea to encourage gaming companies, hardware manufactures, etc... PLUS it'd take way too long to design and implement a new pkgtool, troubleshoot / bugfix it, then maintain thousands of packages ON TOP of designing and maintaining the distro. Let's start with the distro :) RPM isn't so bad with urpmi. If fact, I kinda like it when I've got urpmi at my disposal. It'd be easy to have both our own urpmi-type app AND apt-get in there, which is easy to do. OK on to some basics. Looks like we agree on fluxbox, rxvt/eterm, (is it?) firebird, Gaim, eroaster and CD Bake Oven, ogle/xmms/xine, OOo, {ethereal, etherape, nmap, snort w/swatch & syslog-ng, ipkungfu & Guarddog + Guiddog, you know, network basics}. I really want krusader (or equivalent) as the default file manager. It is by far the fastest way to manipulte files. I take it considering we are both college students this is slightly aimed towards college students, so I suggest we include any libraries that gamers would need to be able to install games later. Once we get the distro-ball rolling, I say we throw in some amazing free games (for example racer looks AWESOME and it's only like 10 megs I think). I agree with a lot of what people said here, except the XBox thing. I don't own one and never will. Something I am going to insist on is a lot of good documentation (quit groaning ;) and I need to learn how CVS works... This is a good point. I'd say it's aimed for college students, not quite so much a stand-alone, X-less server (other distros already do that so well). I wonder if we could write scripts for the install that compile from source and all the source is on the install cd... aru is really awesome with bash scripts, too. He might be able to give us a suggestion here and there. Anyway, if we were to plan from now til X-mas time, I'll have a server starting right after x-mas ;)
  12. But doesn't mandrake patch their kernel like mad - wouldn't newbies be asking for trouble replacing their working kernels?
  13. It really isn't hard. Although there's tons of documentation, I found this an easy one to follow: The kernel part of the install process for gentoo. Head over to gentoo.org and read the x86 installation instructions - you'll learn a LOT ;)
  14. I decided not to start a new thread because this is directly related: Why wouldn't I be able to write to the linux share from windows? The perms on the /mnt/share in linux are good... Is it a setting on the win box? (They were both reading fine but not writing - I think this will help me write to the win... but the other way?)
  15. PS My band could make some sounds to choose from for when X starts up :D
  16. I was going to send you a PM regarding this, but I feel it might be worth letting others read it. I was having the exact same thought last week, but I have some concerns. Roles need to be defined - that is, tasks need to be delegated by a board of say 3 people, not one in the case of a collaborative effort (i.e. it wouldn't be MY or YOUR distro, it'd be ours) - but that's the easy part. It can be tough to agree on what is "needed" and what is optional within the distro. (If you're going to through in everything, why not use another prefab, eh) The point for us I assume would be to make a streamlined distro aimed at speed and security, not quite as much for newbies (call it intermediates). I was thinking tentatively: [*]Fluxbox with Krusader as the default file browser/manager [*]Guarddog and ipkungfu [*]Comliance with the LSB (linux standards base) [*]support for both RPM and APT/aptget [*]RXvt and eterm [*]Mozilla Thunderbird and one other browser with D4X and Gaim [*]k3B and one other burning app (CD Bake Oven?) [*]Xine and a well rounded cd/mp3 player [*]OpenOffice.org and Dia [*]A few network tools like ethereal [*]Racer and another kickass free game or two Basically never more than 2 of one type of app. I'm already familiar with fluxbox configs for menus, backgrounds, etc. I can write scripts and program a GUI for our own "control center". I would like it to all fit on to one bootable install CD, and I'd like a built in option to burn live cd using the options / configs that the current user has (that is to say if userA hits "Make Bootable Live CD" it will come out with his desktop, bookmarks, passwords, etc. He'd be root of that live cd). Obviously this is all negotiable with the "board", but remember that it can be frustrating if some guy's screaming GNOME! while another's shouting KDE! I'm up to it, as long as there's order in the court and we agree on making it somewhat different from all the "include everything" distros like red hat, mdk, slackware, SuSE, etc. It should have server stuff too, but why reinvent the wheel, right? No need to try making a firewall distro when devil-linux or gibraltar do it so well ;) What do you think?
  17. signed it. Late this year. Notice my signiture? Go forth and read any available interviews. It'll make you drool. Trent Reznor (NIN) said they keep pushing back the date because of new ideas / methods to make it the least pleasant place to be :D
  18. looks like our resident polar bear doubles as our resident smartass :P

    building rpm's

If I were you I'd build src.rpm's, because they can be compiled for any processor. Speaking of which - how does one go about making rpms / srpms from tar.gz'd source? Anyone have a tut or link?

    Krusader instalation

oh - and don't forget your tab key to fill in filenames for you, speeds it up and avoids typing fsck ups. ;)

    Krusader instalation

dude - there is the easy way. su to root urpmi the rpm (or rpm --rebuild the src.rpm, then urpmi the result) done Here's how if you downloaded the krusader src.rpm: su [enter] (give root passwd) urpmi libfam [enter] rpm --rebuild krusader.src.rpm [enter] cd /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 (i586 is where src rpm rebuilds go on my machine -> "ls -R" in the RPMS directory to find it) urpmi krusader.rpm If you got a x86.rpm then just su, urpmi filename.rpm, done.
  22. Is there a CLI command to show how long the computer has been up and running? eg [root@pc root]# showmeuptime 2 day(s): 54 minutes: 34 seconds
  23. Two desktops instead of one over 2 monitors? That's strange. To my understanding you'd need 2 instances of the X server running, which I don't think is possible. Anyone else feel free to correct me - I hope for tyme's sake I'm wrong.
