    DVD-Ram

I think there are some experimental drivers available for DVD-RAM drives, you could trying digging them up.
  2. Installed Helix player sound and video play perfectly, but the GUI is weird the icons and menu don't display.
  3. Only had personal experience of VIA chipsets under Linux, but never had any problem with them.
  4. I think its how KDevelop launches the Konsole app rather than how it compiles software/scripts. I did once stumble across an option switch this off but can't for the life remember where it was.
  5. I'm running MDK 10 for the AMD64 and have a small problem with Helix Player. Even though its compiled for i586 (not AMD64) it plays back sound and video perfectly. Its just a shame the GUI turns out like the picture attached. Which is annoying as I now don't know what any of the buttons do (no tool tips either). Any ideas?
  6. Mandrake have always been very good at releasing the final versions of their distros (including ISO images) to the general public soon after they are released. Something not all distros do, so I don't see any reason why they won't do the same for the AMD64 version. When the ISOs are ready that is.
  7. We've been with Tiscali for the last 2 years on a no frills packge. Didn't get a free modem we choose to buy an ADSL modem/router/switch instead (so no driver problems). The connection has always been decent enough and never had a problem with reliability. Not sure if there is a bandwidth limit, but if there is we've never hit it.
  8. If you still use Windows occasionally OpenOffice is probably the best choice as there is a Windows version available as well as a Linux version.
  9. I changed over to 10 when they released the first beta, and have kept updating it. Its great, there were several bugs in the betas but theres been considerable progress since then. The availability of packages (eg PLF) is not as good for AMD64 so you have be prepared to build more packages yourself, but other than that its as good as the i586 version of MDK 10 (which I run on my laptop).
  10. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by encrypted containers (don't do cryptology much) but kgpg is quite good. Its a KDE applet that managers/creates pgp keys for you. It also adds option to KDE/Konqueror menus for encrypting/decrypting files as and when you want.
  11. If you are using KDE as your desktop I would recommend installing the xmm-arts plugin and using that for output. If you do you will have to change the command KDe uses to load xmms from: to just
  12. Because laptops use so much intergrated (and often non-standard) hardware it can make installtion a bit more time consuming, but not impossible. If you do a search on Google you'll find loads of websites giving information on how well (or badly) different brands/models work with Linux. I'd check that out before making a decision. But ending on a positive note, my laptop works perfectly with MDK10 with all the intergrated hardware working.
  13. Wow I'm confused just reading the description! As you've already guessed the names given to drives in Windows and Linux are not always connected. The letters assigned by windows describe partitions not actual drives. In Linux hda would be a drive, while hda1, hda2, etc would be the partitions on that drive. There are several reasons why you might not have a hdc, it could for instance be that hdc is your CD-ROM drive. None of that really helps does it? What might is that hda is normally the master drive on the primary IDE channel, hdb is normally the slave drive. Then hdc would be master on the secondary channel, and so on. You might be able to work out which partition each is based upon that. EDIT: umm I've just repeated what Chalex20 said, but he hadn't said it when I started to type. Grrrr

    SATA

I've got a MSI Neo-FIS2R which has two in-built SATA controllers. There is a standard controller which is part of the VIA® VT8237 chipset and a Promise 20378 On-Board. I only use them as hard drive controllers, no raid, but they both were detected and now work under MDK 10 Beta2 for the AMD64. Not sure how helpful that is, but good luck,
  15. I don't suppose they have made a Live CD for the AMD64 because it wouldn't work on the vast majority of computers. There is a thread running some where on the board discussing how make your own though. On a side note, I'm running MDK10 RC1 for the AMD64 and its great. :)
  16. I've had a K6-2, AthlonTB, AthlonXP(mobile) and now an Athlon64 so you can probably guess that I'm on AMD's side. My opinion is that AMD chips are better value for money, and out perform equally priced Intels.
  17. 1) Not sure, my machine got more responsive when I switched to 10. 2) The excellent (at least IMHO) GCC is included with just about every version of Linux including Mandrake. If you want an IDE I'd recommend KDevelop, although I don't do much programming in Linux when I have its what I've used. For console work I haven't noticed that much difference especially for simple stuff. 3)Thought about BSD? Edit: There is C++ programming for Linux HowTo by the Linux Documentation Project, but they;ve taken it off their web-site for review.
  18. It doesn't come with any Linux software, for Windows there was just a program for watching TV nothing else although there is stuff on their website. For Linux I use XawTV which comes with MDK, to change channel it uses the mouse wheel. The first time I ran it after install it prompted to search for channels, then stored them. There is Linux tv listing software but I've used it.
  19. I've got a Hauppage WinTV card and its works fine. MDK just picks it up during the install and creates a desktop icon for it. But the picture quality isn't great in Linux or Windows even though its attached to a proper roof top ariel.
  20. I imported my Windows fonts into MDK 10CE and it seemed to have gone well until I opened up a document in OOo. Arial, which the report uses for footnotes, appears as Alba on screen. I checked in the MDK font program and the KDE Control Centre and there it is displayer properly. I have tried removing the font and re-installing but still no joy. How do I persuade OOo to use the right font? PS Seems to be the only font affected
  21. I just added a FTP source for the official release to urpmi and then upgraded all the packages. Seems to have worked quite well.
  22. Stumbled upon this link on the new KDE apps site, so if you want some more fonts try this: http://thelinuxbox.org/Got_font.html
  23. In Konqueror click on the "Bookmarks" menu then "Edit Bookmarks". A new window should open then the "File" menu followed by "Import" then select IE and navigate to the files you want to import.
  24. Personnally I prefer ATI, but I seem to be in the minority. Oh well.
  25. Yes I'm running Mandrake 10CE, they don't seem to sell my router any more but this appears to be its replacement: http://www.dlink.co.uk/pages/products/di604.asp It shouldn't matter what the OS the machines on the network run, as long as they have their network cards set up properly and a decent browser. You need the browser to control the router as all the controls are http based.
