    mobos...

The games I speak of only accept certain irqs (5 & 7), and certain address (ie 220H), and require a genuine Creative Soundblaster card. These games were out before Windows existed, even before the 80286 existed. Some before VGA (EGA and CGA games) existed. Old, legacy stuff.
  2. We had something similar here, back in May (storm). These things can be very nasty, as Durachios are capable of bringing down entire forests.

reb2, I happen to love my Sound Blaster PCI 128. Unfortunately, onboard sound/MIDI, even disabled, seems mess up the SB card's MIDI. Unfortunately, my old MSDOS games require a real SB card, and those so-called compatibles just don't work (addresses and such are not correct for SB).
  4. The Debian 3.0 R3 set that I bought, is 9 CDs: 7 + 2 Update.
  5. John is correct in this, and DVDs are even more fragile on top than CDs. Even with Name Brands like TDK and Imation, quality varies from batch to batch. It is better to go with a brand that is known for quality, whether it is data grade or music grade, than with brand you never heard of before, just cause the price is Real Cheap: You may find that you wasted your money, and end up going with the Name Brand anyways. Imation is a good brand. I have been using them for some years now, and never had a problem. Data grade, as I don't burn music. I prefer using RWs for backing up files, formatted as RWs, not burned as Rs. (done from Windows)
  6. Some motherboards have a Load Optimized Defaults option in Bios. This sets both DMA and 32 bit access. Others have a specific option for 32 bit access (ASRock by Asus is one of these). Gigabyte is one of the former. Not all mobos have an option to turn off Plug and Play. My Gigabyte is one these, and Linux works just fine with it on. If your mobo has the Load Optimized Defaults option: After you load these, GO back to the first bios screen with the time and date, and the drive setting, and reset your hdds to LBA! Loading any defaults sets this to Auto (usually the one Linux hates). IFF you installed Linux and these were set to Auto (ignore the one for the CD/DVD drive), you may have to repartition and reinstall your OS(es).
  7. Actually, I call it W(h)ine. hehehe Right now, I really like SuSE 9.2 Pro, and I have 1 test to do to see if I can have it as the exclusive OS for my internet computer: writing to DVD+RWs formatted in Windows for porting downloads to the Windows box (mostly CGI stuff). I don't want to waste Rs, and I don't want to waste +RWs by making them read only in linux (k3b).
  8. An older version of System Commander Personal Edition did not recognize ReiserFS, so I had to make the /boot partition (overkill of 128 MB) and when I installed mandrake, I had it put Lilo/Grub in the first sector of the Root partition, which is /boot. No problems whatsoever. Unlike many linux users, I have no problems with proprietary software.
  9. acpi=off means that mandrake won't turn off the computer. acpi=on means that it will. However...... ACPI in BIOS must be enabled for it work. I have apic disabled and acpi=on ( noapic acpi=on ) and do not have problems shutting down. Chipset is nForce2 on this Gigabyte mobo. I went through MCC to do this. No probs, and doing it from a console is not required.
  10. I have always gone with the HP line myself, and currently using the DeskJet 3820 in USB mode (an old dot matrix is on the parallel port). I have no problems with the cartridges drying out. What may have happened is that ink dried on the printhead, and the cartridges need cleaned.
  11. I didn't install anything. I merely did the thing in the bootloader dialog in MCC. Then I add acpi=on to the append line by editing the default kernel (in my case = enterprise for 1.5 GB ram). Enabling acpi in bootloader mcc dialog only removes acpi references in the append line. Question regarding your login: do you use the auto login? I found endless problems with this method in mandrake. So I use normal login and have no problems when rebooting. Now I have no problems when I do a shutdown. Make sure acpi is enabled in your bios. Remember that I am using Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community Edition Powerpack with no updates. I use auto login in SuSE 9.2 Pro and have no problems at all. Go figure. LOL
  12. Iphitus: rotflmao! I did not know any IE had a poopup/under blocker.
  13. It says nothing more than what SCO has been claiming all along. hehehehehe If I had not known that it had been hacked, I would not have known. LOL! Very slick hack. Subtle and to the point. Still illegal, though.
  14. I checked 'enable acpi' and added acpi=on to the append line, and it works fine with my nForce2 mobo.
  15. I suspect it may be Mandrake's APIC problem. SuSE 9.2 Pro has no problems shutting down my Gigabyte GA-7N400-L nForce2 mobo. Mandrake 10.0 CE Powerpack gets to the shutdown at end of init 6 (I think) and I have to turn the computer off manually. SuSE 9.2 Pro turns the computer off. Go figure. (shrug) Found the solution in another thread: Add acpi=on to the append line in the bootloader, reboot, and it works fine. (also check enable acpi)
  16. Ummm... Is your printer turned ON? Make sure you have checked auto detect printers in MCC Hardware, exit hardware then do hardware again.
  17. Win2K Pro requires an Active Primary Partition (fat32 or ntfs) on hda. Does not need to be big. However, do keep in mind that 2000 will mess up cluster info for linux. 2000 will also take over the MBR.

    mobos...

CNR = Communications Network Riser AMR = Audio Modem Riser I generally try to rule out mobos with either of those slots, and I detest onboard video. I also try to stay away from onboard sound, but, that is nearly impossible these days. I also go for USB 2.0, which I consider a must for these days.
  19. Gowater, surprisingly SuSE 9.2 Pro handles my nForce2 mobo just fine. It even turns the computer off when I log off and tell it to shut down (unlike mandrake 10.0 CE powerpack). Other than the shutdown and don't use the auto login cause the logout don't work right, 10.0 CE powerpack works fine.
  20. Iphitus, I am a KDE guy. Did you mean Gnome 2.2 or kernel 2.2?
  21. Arctic, spare time is ALL I have. I have been disabled for over 25 years. Anyways, all of my Windows games won't run in win2k pro ot NT. The only reason I have 2000 pro, is that some of my 3D CGI apps won't run properly in win98se (if at all), and don't have Linux versions. My 3 hdds are partitioned as follows: hda: (120 GB maxtor) 20 GB fat32 primary, 94.49 GB ntfs primary hdb: (160 GB maxtor) 2 x 30 GB reiserFS primary, 2 GB linux swap logical, 2 x reiserFS logical (dividing space evenly) hdc: (120 GB maxtor) 4 x fat32 primary (pictures, archives, cgicontent, win98swap). Of these, the first 3 have to accessable to win98se, win2k pro, Mandrake, and SuSE in read/write mode. I need another hdd, for my other computer (actually more than one). Then I can play a bit with Debian, and eventually get around to making that system my CGI box. I had a pair of 61 GB maxtors, but, the 120s replaced those, and I gave the 61s to a friend.
  22. Well, I did something similar. I got SuSE 9.2 Pro and Debian 3.0 R3 via eBay to check them out. Currently there is no room on this computer for Debian (not enough hard disk space). Besides, I would rather play with Debian on a separate box, until I am comfortable with it. Look at my sig, and you will see why I have no space. hehehe Win98SE: MSDOS and win3.1 - 98 games Windows 2000 Pro: 3D and 2D CGI Mandrake Linux powerpack: my main distro for the moment SuSE 9.2 Pro: evaluating

Urza, just scroll down that page. LOL. It is listed.
  24. Forking in the Linux world is different than the UNIX world. Here, if you don't find a distro that suits your particular needs, then you can create one. This is exactly why Beowulf Linux was created, since a particular need could not be met by any other distro at the time. Linux and the GPL specifically allow for this creativity, while the Proprietary UNIX license does not, even though it permits adapting to specific hardware platforms, as per the individual license terms. I would say that rather than forking, UNIX fractured. The breadth of Freedom and Creativity specified in the GPL is breathtaking in its scope.
  25. Until now, the only distro/version I have tried other than Mandrake, was SuSE 9.0 Pro. This month, I looked on eBay and got SuSE 9.2 Pro and Debian 3.0 R3 CD sets. The SuSE is for evaluating. Given my fixed - low - disability income, I can't afford to plunk down nearly $100 just to see if it works and suits my needs. If I like SuSE 9.2 Pro, and it suits my needs, I will buy the boxed set. Currently I am in SuSE 9.2 Pro. If I had enough disk space, I would attempt Debian install from the CDs (9 of them - 7 + 2 updates). I don't check out different distros that often, since Mandrake Powerpack has been a rock solid mainstay for me (even 10.0 CE Powerpack). Once I get a box built just for testing different distros, then I will do so more often.
