  1. From my experience, it certainly does. Why in the world would you want to unpack it in a fat32 partition in the first place. Having a fat32 partition mounted in Linux is only to enable transfer of stuff between linux and windows, not another partition in which to do Linux work such as unpacking a tar file. Doing it in root is even more unbelievable. Cheers. John.

    CD???

Don't forget that you can use the UP ARROW key to go back to previous actions in a console and then press Enter again. It saves a lot of typing and remembering stuff. Cheers. John.
  3. I am using Mandrake 10 (also used 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 ) and have NEVER had problems playing MP3s so the trouble you are having is not Mandrake, it is your settings or setup. I have never had to download MP3 anything to be able to play MP3s. Cheers. John.
  4. Hello Keith. Good to SEE another member of MUB. Maybe we can start a trend here of SEEing who we are. Cheers. John.
  5. Have you opened Kmix or ALSA mixer to make sure that sound has not been muted.i.e. turned off ???? this is the cause in most cases of no sound and often the one solution most overlooked because everyone is always too busy looking for complicated answers. Cheers. John.
  6. Open up KDE Control Centre. (Configure your desktop) Select SYSTEM then Login Manager. then click on ADMINISTRATOR MODE and type in your root password. Select the USERS tab. You will see a heading called Select Users: underneath it you will see Hidden Users. In it you will see root has been ticked so UNTICK it.. Click on Apply and close out . Now open MCC (Mandrake control Centre) and click on SYSTEM and then Display Manager and select KDM (KDE Display Manager) and click Apply and close out. When you next log OUT you will see ROOT as one of your log IN options. Cheers. John.
  7. What happens if you put in your Cdrom #1 and reboot???? Does it come up with the option of being able to "Upgrade" or does it only come up with "Install" ??? If it comes up with the "Upgrade" option then you are resonably OK. Just continue to run the "Upgrade" procedure and it will correct any anomolies it finds on the way and bring you back to normal again. If however it does not come up with the "Upgrade" option but only the "Install" one then it means that your OS has been corrupted to the point that the boot up procedure has not been able to detect a working or viable OS. In other words you are in deep s++t . So rather than muse over it all you might just as well continue to do the reinstall from this point on. Chances are most likely that the "Upgrade" path is the one you will encounter. Using this method saves a hell of a lot more time than pondering over how to do this, then that, then someting else, for hours on end and then finally having to do what I suggest the first time round . Please let us know how this works out for you. Cheers. John.
  8. That is only if you are paranoid. In the windows world where it would really matter, there are no such keys as far as I know . I could be wrong. John.
  9. I have found GQVIEW to be the best even though I solely use KDE as my GUI and mostly KDE applications. To move to each picture in turn it is only necessary to left click on the Picture or you can set it up as a SlideShow and you can even do some image maniputation as well. Cheers. John.
  10. Hi BVC. Yes I have my boot directory in / of my Mandrake10 Official Edtion. I used to use a seperate /boot partition but since it didn't seem to me to be of any particular advantage I did away with it. I had no particular beliefs about this however so I don't mind being told the advantages if there are any. I note the details in your quote and can say I have always ensured that the same structure appeared in my system, especially the initrid /boot ........etc. This why I could never understand the kernel panic and init part in that last line of the boot up sequence. Of course in MCC it is now much easier to ensure initrid is the correct one to match the kernel, because one can now click on Advanced in BOOT settings of Lilo or Grub. (I prefer Grub because it doesn't seem to screw up as much as Lilo and is easier to activate even though its boot up screen is still pretty ugly compared to Lilo) Thanks for coming in on this by the way. Thanks in advance and cheers. JOHN.
  11. That last line is something that interests me as well. I have always gotten it whenever I have installed a kernel update and wanted to select it at boot up to try it but because it was not crucial to me I always abandoned the venture. If some could give us a detailed walk through on how to do this it would very greatly appreciated. I have found most of the howtos detailing with this subject about as clear as a white sheet in a snowstorm. The detail is there but the uninitiated like myself cannot make much sense of it. Thanks in advance. Cheers. John.
  12. I second that motion Gowater. Makes a huge amount of sense. Cheers. John.
  13. The nicest people are always the most modest about their knowledge. Cheers A. JB
  14. SwiftDeath. In one of your earlier posts, did you say your file system was hda ??? If you did then you are wrong, hda is simply your first hard drives first partition . I can't seem to find anywhere where you answered correctly what file system you were using. If I am wrong then please accept my apology. Is it ext2 or is it ext3 or is it reiserf ?? During the installation process you set your choice of file system when you setup the partitions so since you do not remember that part, I would say there is every likliehood that you have ext2 and yes when you have a bad closedown it is very difficult to recover. I use the ext3 file system and it is amazing to watch the rebooting process going through each partition in turn checking and making adjustments then finally coming to login as normal. That was NEVER the case when I used ext2 before ext3 came out.
  15. When you do a rebuild like that I have ALWAYS found the most reliable way to ensure a stable system is to do a complete fresh reinstall. Yes I know it is a pain. There is no explainable reason why simply transferring everything into a new case should make a difference even though you make certain that all PCI cards are in EXACTLY their original slots AND ALL external USB cables are in the exact original sockets. The different power cannot make a difference to how the system works unless it has a subtle fault. This can easily be checked by substituting the original Power Supply. I have found through my experience that a reinstall cleans up any potential nasties and give you a great start with your improved assembly and I know that is what you desire or you wouldn't be trying the improvements you are doing. I am a bit of a modder myself so welcome to this part of the computer world but most of all have fun and enjoy it. Cheers John.
  16. I have NEVER ever used Auto-login and from what I read here and in other threads that was a wise choice. Sometimes my instincts serve me well. Other times.......well.............. Cheers. John.
  17. kaiocool. When I suggested going into Mandrake Control Centre then selecting Hardware then Mouse, I did not realize that the UNIVERSAL heading might not be open on your machine. On the left side of the word UNIVERSAL you will a tiny triangle arrow, left click on this arrow and it will open up a line which reads ........Any PS/2 & USB mice..... It should automatically become highlited so then click OK . I understand your frustrations but we have all been through that and as was said earlier, we only want to help and we do it for free in return for others helping us. None of us has all the answers so we pool our collective efforts. Anyway, Welcome to our Linux World and Mandrake in particular. Enjoy. Cheers. John.
  18. Please see my latest post under the heading .............Alcatel Speedtouch 530 Modem- cannot connect. All is revealed. Thanks everyone. :D :D
  19. Happy day to me. Happy day to me. Happy day to me. Happy day to me. At last thanks to an earlier hint by iphitus, about 6hrs ago I took a gamble and connected the modem by LAN instead of USB . Followed through into MCC and did the setup run. Had a couple of little hiccups along the way but solved those AOK. It is now so sweet to be posting this from WITHIN Mandrake10 Official Edition. I am pretty tired at the moment but I solemnly promise that I will post a fully detailed HowTo step by step within the next 24hrs. I will say this now to EVERYONE who has an Alcatel Speedtouch in Australia and it probably applies to others around the world with similar models.....DUMP the USB and use the LAN connection. Most modern Mainboards have onboard LAN so it should not be a problem there but others may need to buy a LAN card. I am not certain but I think they are not very expensive. What I am certain of though is that ADSL via USB is a disaster with Mandrake regardless of the fact that a few people have got it to work. How does my face look at the Moment ? :D :D A million thank yous' to EVERYONE who so graciously gave of their time and knowledge in an attempt to solve what has been a long running problem.
  20. Open up Mandrake Control Centre then select Hardware then Select Mouse . You can follow through from there.
  21. kalocool. Are you selecting the mouse as ......Any USB/PS2 Mouse............ or are you persisting on trying to select your particular mouse type in the selections. I use that particular setting for my Logitech Dual Laser Mouse (USB) and it works perfectly, scroll wheel and all. If you haven't tried it then do so. I'd venture to say that if that doesn't work then you likely have a faulty mouse. Cheers. John.
  22. Pray tell what kind of mouse you are using ?????.
  23. It takes a mighty big man to apologise. Good stuff and congrats. Cheers. John.
  24. The fact that the Irish President seems to have been bought by Microsofts money should be grounds for impeachment. What has happened to Ireland in the past 10 years ? It was always the stalwart of of freedom of the individual and independence. This is another reason why I as an Australian voted against becoming a Republic. So help me just look at what the so called western "democratic" republics are doing to their citizens, country and others in the name of democracy. I think ALL Australians interested in this software patents garbage should be sending emails to Europe and AND the Australian Government DEMANDING, not suggesting, that this nonsense be stopped once and for all. What we also need is a GROKLAW type of organization to oppose this. Groklaw has enough on its plate just at the moment . We should be able to expose every politician who supports software patents and also expose where their election funds come from. But we should also give due credit to those Pollies that have enough brains to see the potential disaster that is software patents. Microsoft has its dirty little hands in every country. Did anyone notice that Microsoft is reducing its employee benefits to the tune of US$80,000,000. And this from a company that has an estimated US$50billion in the bank. Makes you wonder doesn't it. The Linux world must be having an impact on the bottom line after all, even though Microsoft denies it. Microsoft........................The convicted Monopolist that innovates by buying out businesses or "legally stealing" other peoples ideas. Whose idea of charitable donations is to give money in such a way as to ensure it is returned 10 fold by indirect means. (se India - schools.......see Africa - medical centres and hospitals)
  25. Illotl. Whoever told you that you need motherboard drivers to make your sound work, don't know what they are talking about. They are obviously not Linux users. During the install, Mandrake will detect either your on board sound or sound card and IT installs the appropiate drivers. Other than the Video card you don't need NVIDIA anything. Try to stop thinking along the lines you were used to in Windows. This causes most of the difficulties and grief we see here at MUB. Don't keep trying to fix 3 or 4 things at the same time. Concentrate on ONE at a time, because it doesn't just make it hard for yourself but extremely hard for any of us here at MUB to help you because we do not know if you are trying the suggestions and what the results were if any. That is why I haven't bought into anything in particular so far. You have me confused as to what you are actually doing. Slow down and let us deal with ONE PROBLEM AT A TIME please. Cheers. John. I am glad you got your modem working while I was writing this post. Since you have solved the problem PLEASE TELL US how you did it because it maybe helpful to others at a later date. There is not enough of this done by many people who have obtained resolutions from their own or other people suggestions. Now we can deal with the sound problem. Please tell us what your sound system is . Is it onboard you are using and if so what is it ?? Is it a Sound card, if so what is it ??? Then all of us including myself may be able to help you from hereon in. JB
