  1. thats a good answer gowtar, interesting ye. so basically for an exotic computeri i'd have to look at a computer that isn't x86 based. cool, keep the answers coming, this could get intersting
  2. I know that linux is robust, powerful and flexible ok... but what exactly is possible with it? (remember exotic not industrial, but close to it i guess) Consider the following silly millionnaire setups... Multiple soundcards? one recording the other playing back? and maybe another for system sounds? 3 soundcards? one powerful video card feeding multiple monitors, and/or maybe a tv? or more than one video card feeding multiple monitors or multiple video cards for a lovely widescreen monitor and obviously the desktop stretched, or maybe two screens on one widescren desktop?, what are the biggest resolutions we can get? (i know it's down to the hardware, but what can linux do? what is known and a popular massive size?) What about multiple processors? i know it can handle multiple processors, SMP right, but how many? and what gains can be had and how does linux handle all the power? and what motherboard can handle more than two processors? What about RAID, what can be done? how many HDD's can be put in the raid, and how big can be done? And memory?? I got 512MB, Linux flies on it, but say u did scientific applications at home, or proper 3D stuff, or massive DB's? How many Gb's can Linux handle and share resourcefully? What exactly is Linux able to do, or not do as the case may be? I all the above little q's might be a bit vague, but i'm just curious, I am askin in a homeuser kinda way here, not so much industrial... i.e building a dream machine which is more than capable of doing anything u throw at it or do anything u ask it to... lets see what is said here... this will be interesting!!
  3. Hi people, I have seen screenshots of ppl running windows xp inside a windows in linux?? Am I right in thinking this is Wine at work? Or is it WineX or Win4Lin?? I'm slightly confused here. It would be great to run windows inside linux. So what do I need? And what is possible? Can I do anything that I could do with windows through that little program that runs windows as a program in linux? Would I be able to watch TV via my DVB card and listen to my WMA files through windows media player and use windows messenger to chat and view webcams in the windows running inside linux? or am i thinking it's a bit unreal and make believe? thanks deiz

    winmx on linux?

or something that can access that p2p network for file sharing? thanks
  5. hey, i won't post a pic, to be honest with u, when i clicked 'auto' on my monitor it was a lot better, even centred the thing too, but the main issue now is that my 'web fonts' are a bit blurry, i've got another post for that one somewhere else, maybe i will have to get the ms true type fonts
  6. I've downloaded the win32 codecs for linux and installed it, typed: 'rpm -ivh win32-codecs.rpm' as root, it installed, no indication of where, so what now?? How do I get XMMS to play WMA files, I was told that this is the way. Bit puzzled now. Thanks

    What is what in linux?

coming from windows myself (or windoze as u should say it now), i found it quite difficult to grasp the very different concept of computing linux does. It is indeed much more powerful in the CLI (command line interface, i.e Konsole, i'm not quite so sure about the midnight commander, Konquorer seems spot on to me, although some people swear by the midnight commander. Linux does seem to be a spot on OS in comparison to Windows, many time I have thought to myself, of f**k this, this is too hard, but I like what I am learning, just bare with it for a few week to overcome the shock. In the meantime have a look at some of these sites: http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html http://www.tldp.org/ Enjoy!
  8. ok here goes.... i'm using ATI Radeon 9000, KDE 3.2, and i've done some tweaks etc, monitor is 15tft, drivers should be ok, and resolution is 1024x768 running at 24bit and i'm guessing here sending 72hz to the monitor. i auto configured my monitor, that helped a bit, things still seems a big edgy and blurry :(, but not so misty. i think the fonts are screwed up in some way, i was assuming everything would have been configured with such a new version of linux etc.

    Firefox Fonts

wow, that 'about:config' thing is quite cool, tried some options, i switched on 'browser.turbo' he he, as for changing the fonts, i think it's solely down to the 'x-free86' system, so now comes the hard bit.... aaaaaghhh! thx anyway, any more suggetions?

    Firefox Fonts

ATI Radeon 9000, its not so much as misty but not so sharp as windows, maybe a the dpi is not set or something, i don't know about this kinda stuff.
  11. I don't want the serif/times kinda font, i can't get the settings changed to make it a font without tails (i.e arial or something). I have also asked about why my dispalay is so misty compared to windoze in the hardware thread, i don't know it they can be related, just seems so unclear to me. I don't like the weird and misty world of linux yet! Sorry, any fixes? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  12. Any know why my graphics seem so much softer than windows? I don't like it, I've got ATI Radeon 9000 and a 15"TFT, I can tell the difference instantly that windows is much sharper and clearer. Any ideas on what is going on and a fix? Thanks [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]

    firefox gone???

Hi, Last night I installed Firefox 0.9 on Linux, i followed the instructions on the firefox site and i did it (my ifrst installation was painfree)... till now. I don't know where it was installed, I'm pretty sure I wasn't Root when I installed it, I gotta find it, I can't do without it. Help. What is the default installation folder for new programs? Or do I need to do something else? Thanks Deiz
