  1. Do you have the two Hard drive Partitions mounted so that when you are in one OS you can readily see the other OSs partitions. If you cannot then you CANNOT copy anything to the other OSs Partition on the other hard drive no matter what you type into a console to copy a file across. And if they are mounted so that they can see one another then it is just as easy to Copy and Paste via Konquerer. In console the correct way to copy from one folder to another place is as follows:- cp / <your choice of directory>/ <your choice of folder>/ <your chosen file> / <your destination directory>/<your destination folder>/ NOTE: There is a space after cp. cp is the instruction. The section after it says what File or Folder is to be copied. There is a space after <your chosen file> and the next section is the destination. Instruction------------> From-----------------> To. Now if your two hard drives are not mounted so that they can see one another then that can easily be set up by using Mandrake Control Centre in BOTH Mandrake OSs. Cheers. John.
  2. I still think you have not burned your downloads as ISO images correctly and have not checked the Checksums to be sure that the downloads have not been corrupted during the downloads. Until you do that, everything you do and what others suggest is going to be a WASTE OF TIME . If your machine boots OK from your Windows disk then there is no reason at all why you could not boot from a CORRECTLY burned Mandrake CD. Cheers. John.
  3. It is version 1.2.9 which has the soundwrapper fault. Version 1.2.10 fixes that. An RPM of XMMS ver.1.2.10 for Mandrake can easily be found on the internet at one of the contributor sites. Try Google and XMMS 1.2.10 and you will get a great number of sites. Below is just one of them that I just checked a few minutes ago. http://norlug.org/~chipster/rpm_handler/ca...norlug.i586.rpm ( Thanks Chip Cuccio for your contribution to the Linux users of this world) Cheers. John.
  4. It looks like you have got your passwords stuffed up . Maybe you have got your Root Password and your Account Password mixed up. Have you tried swapping them over ??? In other words try using your Account password in Root and vice versa. Cheers. John.
  5. Ixthusdan. You may be right. But I DID NOT say that my suggestion is 100% the answer. I did say that MOSTLY (85% of the time) it did solve things and when it did not then I went looking for other solutions so the idea is still the quickest to start off with. Although I started off with Win98 then went to Win2000, I never new anything about the Repair procedure in W2000 until recent times and I have been doing the dummy "upgrade" concept for at least 2yrs now. I have NEVER tried the upgrade idea in w2000 to fix problems because the repair routine either worked or if it didn't ( majority of times) it meant do a clean reinstall. When I was trained as an Air Force Apprentice Radio and Radar Technician, we were taught that one should try ALL the simplest possible remedies before trying the more difficult ones. What is it with computer enthusiests today that you all have to look for the most difficult routines to solve a problem??? Has to be fixed via the command line !!! Using the GUI is too simple so it cannot be as good !!! Just doing a random look over this very MUB (absolutely the best in the internet world) will show that the majority of the solutions to problems were simple and ultimately done via the GUI as in MCC or KCC. e.g. Computer does not start. Young Technician checked everything in the power supply and the switching and took 5 hrs so called me. The actual solution...........the wall power plug was not plugged in and switched on. My time 5mins Think I am joking..???? I am not. The good thing that came out of that was that young Tech never forgot that lesson and became the best of all the Techs with the lowest service times of all of them. Good for everyone. Sorry for maybe being a little offtopic but I felt it was relevant here as in many other places and discussions. Cheers. John.
  6. Now just try to imagine Microsoft trying to help a customer solve a problem like that. The fact that our good friend from the Philippines had english language problems (hell I cannot speak anything other than English) as well as setup problems yet the determined cooperation of a group of volunteers worked it out and so we have another happy Linux member. Fantastic work fellers, congratulations. Cheers. John.
  7. While I mostly agree with you txthusdan, I thoroughly endorse streeters' recommendation. Going the dummy "upgrade" path is a quick and easy way to get things set up properly again. About 20mins and it's over instead of spending hours looking for solutions to what is probably a one off problem resulting from a slightly incorrect install. uberpenguin will have plenty of other more important things to learn in time. Cheers. John.
  8. Hello Kjel Oslund. I tried what you said and it does not work that way at all but I am running 0.9.1 version so that might be the difference. Cheers. John.
  9. I quite like the GLOW . See enclosed snapshot. Cheers. John.
  10. I've just added mine even though I am unlikely to play the games. I strongly support the principle of porting games and such to LINUX. Cheers. John.
  11. Hello Darkelve. Nah. Ballmer couldn't balance anything let alone try to balance on a ball . Let's face it, a feat like that would require skill and talent . When he did his monkey dance I bet even the monkeys were laughing and saying "just who is this talentless idiot or is he just a throw back to our far distant ancestors ??? ". Cheers. John.
  12. Hello Streeter. So do I. I used to use it but for some reason I did not install it this time in Mandrake10 OE. I will soon fix that however as I only realised it when I was wanting to describe a solution in another thread currently running. Just installed it. It is i kdeadmin-kpackage .x .x .x-rpm for anyone looking for it or you can find it on Disk #4 of the 4 disk set. Cheers. John.
  13. Magnificent Darkelve. Simply love the punch line. Would make a great Advert. Considering how pervasive the Internet is, maybe someone could make a video of the idea and make it available for us all to circulate it around . That would be advertising Linux the WWW way now wouldn't it ????? (But make it in a common format so that it can be played on a Windows or Linux platform) Cheers. John.
  14. All that will do is open the Application which means everytime you want to use the Application you have to type in again. What I suggest enables you to create an Icon you can use to open the application by finding where the activator is located. As popular as the command line is, I think it is fair to say most of us prefer the GUI way since we are usually "two finger peckers" so typing is a real chore. Cheers. John.
  15. Everytime I have installed Mandrake and then also DVD capability, after installing libdvdcss (I also install the libdvdcss-devel as well) and the libdvdread I routinely open Konsole and type in su ,click Enter then enter password and then press Enter again and finally type in the following :- ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd.....................press Enter.....................Note the spaces and also the very first letter is a lower case L. As a result I have just about never been unable to play a DVD in at least one of the Video Players. All require some sort of juggling within the player to get them started since none seem to be able to play straight off as does PowerDVD does within Windows. But I can live with that just to avoid using my W2000-Pro .
  16. SoulSe is the only one who has got it. The Japanese advertising is taking the piss out of all those idiotic advertisements from Microsoft and there is not a thing Microsoft can do about . I suspect that Microsoft sales people are so dumb when it comes to real intellect that this all just goes straight over their heads. I remember the brilliant one from Fuji Film about the new born baby popping up a camera and snapping a picture. It was shown in Australia for a long time and extremely popular. It was not only cute and original but was taking the piss out of Kodak shitty adverts without making any reference to them or copying them and again dumb Kodak sales people could not see it although everybody else did. If you do not think the japanese have not caught on to the Aussie "taking the piss" expertise then you should see the Japanese car makers and their ads. They are brilliant and funny. Love the ones about the dog and "bugger" . Some idiots tried to get the series of adverts banned and they were withdrawn for a few days but after the uproar from the general public who loved the ads, they were continued. American sales people seem to think they are the worlds experts but you only have to look at adverts from around the world and you soon realise that is nowhere near the truth. Not even a quarter way to the truth. So I am not at all surprised by this advert from Japan. Way to go. Cheers. John.
  17. Glad you solved the problem OK. Cheers. John.
  18. Shouldn't it be type in startx instead of startkde ????? The second part is correct about going into MCC. John
  19. Hello all. I was asked by a man referred to me to install Mandrake 10 OE on his computer and to show him how to use it. It has a 10gb HDD running Win98SE. Easily repartitioned it using Partition Magic and checked that Windows was all aok and it was. During the Mandy install, there is a quickly flashed error message which is too fast to read and then it goes into a text mode form of install which gets itself into a loop where it asks where to place / i.e.root. Is there someway to pause or stop the procedure at the point where the error message is shown so that I can determine what the problem is ????. I have tried the PAUSE/BREAK keyboard button and all kinds of buttons but without success. I should add that I have disabled Plug&Play in the BIOS. The system has a SIS-Trio.32/64 PCI Video card which I think may be the problem but I am only guessing here and won't be certain until I can read the error message. I am guessing this might be the reason it switches to a text install instead of the GUI form of install. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because this fellow, who is about my age, is very keen to get into Mandrake and away from Windows because he cannot see anything in windows to keep him there once he learns how to use Mandrake. Thanks in advance. John
  20. When XP and Mandrake are not connected, I cannot see how Mandrake having a problem can cause a problem in XP. It is likely an irq problem perhaps because you maybe have NOT disabled Plug &Play in the BIOS. Check that point first because that causes more problems than it is worth. Please let us know the results from this then we can proceed on other possible points. Cheers. John.
  21. If you are not at home with the command line and using a console then try the following GUI approach which works for me. Click on HOME which will open up Konqueror. Click on the UP ARROW twice near the top left side and this will show all the ROOT Folders. Click on USR then click on BIN then look for a "gear wheel" icon with the same name as the program that you installed. If it is there, then left click down on it and hold and drag it to the PANEL (at the bottom of your screen) and drop it then click on OK, or drag it to the desktop and drop it then click on LINK HERE. If the program is not in BIN then UP ARROW again and click on LOCAL and then BIN (it is not the same BIN as before) and look for it there. If it is not there either then there is another easy way to find where it has been installed and that is to open MCC (Mandrake Control Centre) then Software Manager then Remove then select All Packages and scroll down until you find the name of the package you had installed. I am assuming it was an RPM package that you installed. If it was not then the rest of this part is irrelevant. Click the button for Maximum Information. If you find your package then click on it to highlight it and then scroll down the Files data and you should be able to get a good idea of where to look for that "gear wheel"icon having the title you are looking for. Hope this helps you and a lot of other newcomers (I hate the word newbies). Cheers. John.
  22. I think your problem solution is as simple as going into your BIOS and changing the boot up sequence to Floppy and THEN CDROM and then hdd. The usual default sequence has the hdd and cdrom reversed so naturally when the boot sequence starts it checks for a floppy disc and if it finds none it then goes to the next in the sequence and naturally it finds a bootable os , namely your XP, so it boots into it. so of course it does not look for a cdrom. When you put cdrom in 2nd position then the hdd will not be activated on unless nothing is found in the cdrom. If the cdrom boot image is detected then it will be acted on and the sequence will not even look to the hdd. The new sequence recommended can be permanently left this way since it is far more sensible and practical. Cheers. John.
  23. I have no expertise reasoning for it but I have a gut feel that the problem is hardware related. I suspect Memory first, then Mainboard and the CPU third. If you have dual sticks of memory then remove one and then run the system for a while. Then do a changeover of sticks and run again for a while. I have done the same procedure on two different machines that used to give similar problems and in both cases one of the sticks was faulty and when replaced with a new stick the problem was gone and did not return. If you have only one stick then you should try a borrowed stick to check this out.. Memtest does not always detect a faulty memory stick as I found out recently when I had freeze problem on my own present system (see my signature). The memtest came out ok but when I ran each of the two memory sticks alone, one worked flawlessly and the second one would not even boot up no matter which slot it was in. Corsair replaced the matched set under warranty so it was definitely faulty. I hope this info helps somehow. Cheers. John.
  24. Hello idud. Nice to SEE a new member and, so active too, in helping others. Cheers. John.
  25. I too have tried it and it really does work. I could not find the last one of the recommended lines to alter but the rest I was able to set and the one which had the 100 setting I made to 200 and it all works aok. Firefox certainly is a great browser. I thought Galeon was great too but this one even beats it. Cheers. John.
