  1. so basically when i create the partition i should use /home and / as my mount points when using the custom partition feature on the install disk to split the drives?? that should split the drive into two so that windows is on one and linux on the other ??
  2. i am about to install linux mandriva 2006 on my computer and I already have windows xp. I have a sony vaio fj270 notebook and i might partition the drive but would it make a big difference to partition the drives so that windows and linux each have a separate drive ??? Or would having both operating systems on one drive make a big difference ?? basically should i partition or is it just fine to leave both on the same drive ??? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  3. yea okay i am new so i am confused on what your telling me. what do i do with this information just enter it in terminal or what ??? I figured that some type of software already existed that i could just upload ????? Is this the only way ???
  4. would it even be worth configuring all this nonsense. I have heard that winmodems don't work well with the cpu and present problems to the system overall ????
  5. I have a sony vaio VGN-FJ270B and i have removed windows and am now running solely on Linux Mandriva 2006. The laptop I have has a motion eye camera installed just above the LCD screen of the monitor and I know windows has software that can use the camera but I was wondering if their is software that can use the camera now.. Is their software for this camera ?????? Something must exist, i use gtkam for my digital camera, so something must exist for this right ?????? \ oh yea , i would just like to thank everyone for helping me with my other problems with my computer .. thanks
  6. yea, it is a laptop, so the modem is internal V.90 fax modem if that helps ??? What would be the problem,??? the computer doesn't want to read the modem, when i try it, the computer says the modem is busy, but how can it be busy when the modem isn't being read and the internet connection hasn't been established ?????
  7. I have a sony vaio fj270 and i have installed mandriva 2006 and am setting up kppp which is going rather smoothly. The only problem is that when i query the modem it keeps coming up modem is busy ???? I went into the Mandriva Control Center to set-up the connection and the same thing happens ?? Is their something I can do to help the computer recognize the modem, because in essence the computer isn't reading the modem or more appropriately not connecting with the modem properly ??? any suggestions please .. 8. i am starting school in a year and the tech department at the school is unsure of my question. The school uses elearning materials that they say are rather popular at most universities, and I was wondering since I am using Linux Mandriva2006 would that be able to run the program ??? I know this is difficult to answer not knowin g the exact program but I figure whatever it is will most likely run in Windows through either Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Excel, Quicktime adobe for the most part and if i am not mistaken Linux has software that covers all that stuff ?? right??? The tech deparment told me that some of the elearning materials will not work with mac's, if that helps ....

  12. what the hell is wrong with drakeconnect ??? it can't find my modem, i use an external modem v.92, NOT a winmodem so what is the problem ?? suggestions ?? can it be a firewall problem ?? or a interface problem ?? or is a patch required ?? or basically is mandriva just possessing a bug that needs to be rectified ?? thaks

    drivers

when i type /var/log/messenger, it says no such directory so i used /var/log/pppd and then it took me back to the root prompt, when i tried grep- ping pppd it was bashed, no such file or directory ??? when i try and connect through drakeconnect, the connection fails and the modem connection is never made, i wonder if i said screw the modem and got a cable connection would it have a better chance of working, becuase for some reason Mandriva has a significant problem, because it isn't kppp, it is Mandriva, because when i had mandrake 9.2 this was not an issue at ALL.... what do you think ???? thnks
