  1. Sounds remarkably like your cdrom is corrupted. Try a fresh download and do a checksum test after downloading but before burning the iso to disk, and also after burning the disk to make sure it is ok. When burning, also choose the slowest possible burn speed to help prevent even slight errors. Cheers. John.
  2. The company probably is serious................by thinking that they can sucker Linux users into believing they need a defragmentation program, at a price ,i.e. to make money. I know darn well that if such a process was needed by Linux then Linux people would have written such a program years ago. This is just another of the windows world thinking they can now move in on Linux and make a financial killing, just like the anti-virus companys are hoping to do. They actually think Linux users are as "dumb" or naive as the vast majority of Windows users. It also shows that these "hopeful" companys have NO IDEA how Linux works. Cheers. John.
  3. I am willing to bet that you have not also installed the kernel-source.2.6.8.1-8mdksmp as well. The fact that you have installed a new kernel is not enough and it is NOT a kernel-Source. You need BOTH a kernel AND a matching version kernel-source. NVIDIA uses certain files that are ONLY contained in the kernel-source, and without those it will not install. This also applys to some other programs so as a matter of course I ALWAYS install both. Also are you using a dual processor system ???. If not, then why have you installed a smp type kernel which is intended for Symmetric Multi Processor ,i.e. dual processors. Cheers. John.
  4. Hello ANNA. Reference your last line :- I feel the same way. I am really enjoying Mandrake10-OE. I am glad that I have a second setup of Mandrake that I can replace with the newer Official when it is released so I can try it out in safety. Cheers. John.
  5. Hello DruManiac. I could not raise the RPM-find site but here is another site. http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...m.html#provides Yes the rpm is compatable for Mandrake 10. Cheers. JOHN>
  6. Hello arctic and adrianovaroli. I agree with you both 100%. I have never been able to understand this cryptic title nonsense but I guess that is the privilege of the programs writers. Most of them seem to indulge in it. Even reading their application descriptions is a trial and often make little sense to most people. This does not excuse Mandrake or the KDE project team for not cleaning up the shambles that is called Menu. I am wondering if there is some cultural effect that produces this kind of arrangement. I realise that France is the nominal home of Mandrake and it must influence the menu format which perhaps is different in perspective to the english speaking part of the world. So maybe we are getting a Chinese english or Japanese english type of effect here. I feel that MandrakeSoft do not take any notice of the english speaking worlds comments about Mandrake at all. But thank god they turn out the best package Linux OS of them all. Cheers. John
  7. Thank you anna for filling in more of the details than I had. I too am now better informed. I surprised myself how much of the story I had. Not bad for an older fella, Huh.??? Cheers. John.
  8. Thanks spiedra. I will try your suggestion. I am currently using Firefox and it has been brilliant. Cheers. John.

    Long bootup

I quess you are connected to the Internet via LAN on your mainboard or you have a ethernet card. If this is not the case then it means that you have LAN enabled in the BIOS of your Mainboard so go into the bios and set it to Disable onboard LAN. This will then stop Mandrake detecting it and trying to set it up thus it will just breeze past it. I have ADSL and am connected by LAN so my system does take a little time at the ETHO point, as you experience, and I expect it. Cheers. John.
  10. I am using a Dual Laser Logitech Wheel Mouse which has a thumb button. In Firefox the thumb button works perfectly for the Back function but only in firefox. The only thing I have ever done is select "Any USB or PS2 mouse" during install and then select single click operation in KDE Control Centre. I cannot fathom why so many still have to fiddle with Mouse installs. I am not inferring anything about the user, I am just amazed that there seems to be problems regarding the Mouse hardware, and such hardware that Mandrake has almost made a non event. Cheers. John
  11. I still find the easiest way to un-tar is to right click on the tarball and select -------> Actions -----> Extract Here. This will untar and create a folder of the same name. If it will not untar this way then you can be certain that you have a corrupted tarball. It is easier and visual. It does not appeal to the 100% command liners but what the heck. Cheers. John.
  12. It appears to be AOK. Just checked it against mine and even though I have more partitions and devices, I cannot se anything out of place in your setup. Your gut feel that you may have done something wrong may be just that. If everything is still working OK then stop worrying and only be concerned IF something misbehaves. Cheers. John.
  13. Isn't mp3Pro actually the newer mp4 or whatever it was called that the company (German) (and holds patents on mp3 as well) that produced it and charges a royalty and is the reason you have to pay for it from Nero ??? If it is then it IS NOT mp3 even though it is implied in the name. If it were not for Nero then the company owning the new codec would be going nowhere because OGG is regarded as superior and is rapidly being adopted everywhere and it is free.
  14. O what a genius.......dickOhead. The O makes all the difference and it will gO Over the heads of nOn Aussies. Great stuff mate. Regarding the website you suggested, how the heck can you read the text. The purply colours make it almost impossible to read. One can select English of course but that is not the problem. When I click on what I think is the active link, it goes to a blank page and says Done. I notice also that there are no icons anywhere. Any Ideas because i would truly like to check out this site. Thanks in advance. John
  15. Thanks chat1410. I do not think you should regard yourself as PEBKAC. So help me, we all have to learn somehow or another when we venture into new territory. And the fact is, you are learning and I compliment you on your success so far. We are all right behind you. Cheers. John.
  16. Hi chat140. What the devil is this PEBKAC you mention so often ???. I have never heard of it before. It appears that, as I suggested, you were NOT burning the CDROMs correctly. I am glad for you that you seem to have made progress. You seem to have ignored our request for info as to whether you did or did not follow our advice. This sort of feedback helps us determine whether our offered help is useful or not. John.
  17. Did you burn the downloaded cdrom files as iso or did you just copy them on to cdroms. If you did not burn them as iso then the disks WILL NOT BE Bootable, fullstop. Please let us know how you go. (hurricane not withstanding). Good fortune and remember to keep your head down. cheers. John.
  18. Hello mandrake-user. Bootsplash comes in two related packages. There is boot splash which is the basic bootsplash program and there is bootsplash-themes which has the different boot splash pictures you are looking for . The bootsplash basic program should have been installed as part of your original installation so there is NO NEED to download and install it. On the other hand if it is not installed then iinstall it from the CDROMs you used for the installing of Mandrake. To get the latest bootsplash-themes package I suggest you go to the following website and download from there. It is an RPM package. http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/Mandrake_Linux.html The file that you just downloaded, is it an RPM or is it a tarball ??? If it is an RPM then you simply click on it and then follow the prompts and click ok on EACH prompt. To view the Boot splash styles you have now installed just open Mandrake Control Centre and click on BOOT where you will find Boot Theme and make your choice there. Then click on OK. If it is a tarball then let us know because the install is a little more involved but not too difficult. I have installed both forms (rpm and Tarball) without difficulty because there does not seem to be any dependency issues. Cheers. John.
  19. The burn speed is determined by the media itself and not the max speed capability of burners drive. Therefore it won't matter how hard you try to set it above the medias max speed it will not change things. The medias properties are embedded in the pre-formatted disc and is read by the burner to make the correct settings for that disk . This is the reason, for example with a cd-r or a cd-r/rw, say the disk capability is 52 times and you select half speed (26 times) to ensure an accurate burn , you often find the burner changes that selection from 26 times to a new figure of perhaps 24 times . One of the optimum burn speeds for that particular media does not happen to be 26 times. The same principle applies to burning DVD media as well. My burner has a cd-r/rw burn speed capability of 32 times but I am hard pressed to find discs with even 12 times burn speeds and any attempts to try and burn a 12 timer at above 12 times is useless. Cheers. John.
  20. All good advice (from Mandrake, RedHat, etc.) has ALWAYS RECOMMEND DISABLING PLUG & PLAY IN THE BIOS BEFORE, repeat BEFORE, DOING THE INSTALLATION OF MANDRAKE. The problem is not a conflict with the kernel. It is simply that when P&P is selected, the bios assigns the interrupts and thus prevents Linux from detecting and assigning the interrupts itself. That is why the sound card was not detected. When the P&P was disabled then Mandrake was able to detect the audio card and thus proceed from there. So there is no mystery about why sound came to life This is the cause of more problems than you can poke a stick at. Even if the install seems to have gone OK there is almost always problems that intermittently crop up and seem to have no rhyme or reason to them and seem to sometimes magically disappear. and reappear. For a stable system you MUST do this and follow this up by disabling harddrake in Mandrake Control Centre -------> System -----------> Services , AFTER you have completed the install . Cheers. John.
  21. Simple statement. AMD Processors ARE NOT YOUR PROBLEM, the problems are else where. Most likely your Mainboard chipset. Do try what gowater suggests first then let us know how you go and we can proceed from there. But forget about the AMD Processor doubt. I am another who uses AMD exclusively (7 different machines and 9 different models of AMD Athlon XP. See my signature of my latest) Cheers. John.
  22. Your fstab looks perfectly OK. This means that what is missing is only the Icon on the Desktop. That is why the console query tells you the cdrom is already mounted. Use Konqueror and go to /mnt and see if /cdrom and /cdrom2 are shown. I suspect they are so if you have a cdrom in one of those two and click on it you should see the data. Open Kde Control Centre and go to Look&Feel then select Behaviour and click on it. select Device Icons and make sure there is a check in each of the boxes alongside of ALL references to CDROMs (mounted and unmounted). Click apply and you should be okay again. Cheers. John.
  23. Could not have said it any better CHRIS Z. You will notice that Linux always displays Files and Folders/Directories in correct Alphabetical order. In windows this does not happen properly even when you set it up to do this and add another folder or file later. Linux :- Built from carefully crafted parts and engineered to work together then fine tuned Windows :- Thrown together from anything they can lay their hands on (stolen and otherwise) and fiddled with until it seems to somehow work in a fashion. Cheers. John.
  24. Yes it does. I would say that your system is seriously corrupted and trying to fix things is really a waste of time. Your far better off doing a complete clean reinstall. This would take you an hour at the most. So far i suspect you have spent days on the problem. Not really worth it is it.is it ??? Think you will learn more by trying to fix the problem??? I don't think so. When a system is badly corrupted you end up just chasing your tail. When ever I muck up something on my system ( I am always fiddling) I follow this course. Within an hour I am set up again, extra software additions reinstalled and settings restored. I have two setups of Mandrake10-OE on my machine so if I screw up my main one, I have a working system to fall back on if I want to come here for help or whatever. Cheers. John
  25. Regarding missing titles in the Menu. You can fix that by opening Konsole and typing menudrake . This will open menudrake for you so you can do a menu recovery. At the top left side, click on File then click on Reload System Menu. You will see a little zig-zag activity and then you can close menudrake and the next time you select Menu, you should see all the apparently missing items. Cheers. John. Using Konsole, you can also open up KDE Control Centre for Look & Feel by simply typing kcontrol . Using Konsole, you can also open up Mandrake Control Centre by simply typing mcc .
