  1. Why don't you install the nvidia drivers via MCC, it would be the easiest way. All you need is to have your repo's set up, with the non-free repo's as well, and install the nvidia dkms stuff, then run Xfdrake. If you have the PowerPack version of Mandriva, it will be included on the disk. To install it manually like you are attempting above, you have to exit the X server first, you can do this by typing in a terminal/console init 3, then change to root, cd to the directory where you have the driver located, etc, etc, but it is far easier just to do it through MCC, you don't have to worry about having to get the kernel source etc, everything is taken care of for you.
  2. How does this compare to Vendetta Online ? And is this the game that there was a bit of trouble a while back, with members of the dev team who were also playing the game, were helping there side to win, gain stuff via cheating and inside knowledge type thing?
  3. I am just running the F8 Live cd, the Gnome one, it's quite nice, snappy to. Yeah, the default one, I guess it is a bit, but beauty is in the eye of the . . . and all that. I always bring my own anyway, Glossy+Lush FTW, don't know why they don't have Lush in there from default, but never mind.
  4. Whats with all those links at the bottom? They all take you to the same place, some webmailer login page.
  5. Yeah, It's definitely there, unless of course you skip the first run procedure (or whatever it's called), and just go straight to use the app, and set things up manually from within.
  6. That's no fair being able to edit your posts without it showing up as having been edited ;) ^^ I thought AI had made it clear in the original post that there was need for Cedega, or more cost etc.
  7. and the next word is . . . sorry, I couldn't resist :P
  8. Here are some mirrors for ETQW 1.2 ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/etqw http://www.atomicgamer.com/file.php?id=65260 http://planetquakewars.net/Community/News?entryId=3942 http://88.198.24.75/comments.php?news_id=1081 originally added it to the lead post above, but seen it caused a scroll bar to appear on the front page, so I put it down here instead. Sorry (:
  9. Unreal Tournament 3 just went Gold today, so it's finished, will be released on the 19th I think, (15th here in Australia so they say), just have to wait a little longer for the Linux binaries to become available.
  10. Video Cards

No, no, your motherboard doesn't have to support it, it's on the Video card, nothing to do with your system RAM, it's just the type of memory that is on the video card, it doesn't effect anything else. I'd say whether or not the card you buy has DDR2 or DDR3 wouldn't even bother you, so I wouldn't worry about it. The video card will be fine regardless of if it is DDR2 or DDR3, it's just a performance thing, and something that most people would probably not even notice.

    Video Cards

Well, as they say the more the merrier, depends what you are doing I guess, if you are a gamer I would get a card with more, and faster memory, ie ddr3 instead of ddr2 etc, but if you are not into graphic intensive stuff, it's not such a worry. I think a card with 256MB would more than handle your needs. If you look at that site above, you can get a 256MB 7600GS for $132, or 512MB 7600GS for $148, would not be as fast as say a 256MB 7600GT for games, but surely more than enough for other stuff, if gaming was higher up on your list, I would go for the GT, if not GS would be fine.

I think he means, that if you weren't to concerned about whether or not the driver was open source or not. The open, or free as in speech, nvidia driver is not much good, (no 3d), therefore you would have to use the proprietary (closed source) driver, but if you went ATI you could use an open source driver. I myself would go for nvidia, but that's just me. I just recently got a Leadtek 7600GT for my second PC, because the 6800GT it had died. I am quite happy with it, it's performance is practically identical to the 6800GT, with the added bonus that it runs much cooler, and is also quieter, I was a little worried that performance may have been lower due to only having 12 pipes as apossed to the 6800's 16, but the higher memory and core clock speeds pulled it through, I was so happy with it, I in fact purchased another one, and stored it away incase the 6800GT in this PC happened to die, as AGP may get harder to find in the future. I didn't wish to upgrade either of these 2 PC's to pci express, as I am building a new PC to get up with all the Core 2 Duo, PCI express etc goodness for Unreal Tournament 3 release. I tend to buy most of my stuff from AusPCMarket, they are not always the cheapest, but still very competitive, plus for most stuff, except larger things like monitors, complete systems etc, freight is free, and delivery is lightning fast. I'm in North Queensland, and if I order something early in the morning (weekdays of course), I'll have it on my doorstep the next day. Here is a link to there nvidia AGP cards. http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php?re...ducts.php?input[category_id]=242 The Leadtek 7600GT that I got, is a little higher than $150, it's $205, but it is a good little performer, runs all my games including Doom3, Quake4, at 1280x1024 with maxed out settings, ET Quake Wars at 1024x768 all settings up, it also runs UT3 demo fine at 1024x768 low settings very well. But if you are not into gaming that much, there are others there to choose from. And ATI AGP Cards http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php?re...ducts.php?input[category_id]=243
  14. Nothing wrong with asking for help. We all need a little help sometimes.
  15. Clean install, everything works fine, the only trouble I had was when I installed 2 apps, Hydrogen and SoundKonverter. Hydrogen had no sound, and SoundKonverter would not install. I post about this on the Mandriva.com forums, Adam done a rebuild of Hydrogen which fixed the problem, and had SoundKonverter fixed, all by the time I got home the next day, certainly can't complain about the service. All just in the nick of time as well, was using Ubuntu, and Ubuntu7.10 was on the verge of release, had these 2 programs not worked in Mandriva 2008 (I use them daily), I would be using Ubuntu 7.10 now, but as it turns out, Ubuntu was pipped at the post by Mandriva 2008, and I'll be staying with Mandriva for this round at least, I think Mandriva 2008 is awesome. (Ubuntu 7.10 is very nice as well)
  16. Yes, you're right, I'm sure they'll be fine, . . . . . . . . I hope :P
  17. I usually use Seagate, I have had some trouble in the past with WD drives dying on me, 2 or 3 of them within 6 months, 1 within a week, 1 didn't even work full stop, I don't usually worry about warranty as it's far quicker and less hassle to just go and buy another one, plus the one that lasted under a week, and the one that was DOA, had an abrupt meeting with a concrete floor, so I don't think they would have given any warranty after that  . But what makes me a little sad, is just the other day I went and brought 4 new 250GB hard drives, I wanted Seagate, but they only had WD, so I got 4 of them, then I came across this thread, and my heart sank as I recalled my own experiences with WD, and wondered how I could be so stupid , I could have just waited a week until they got the Seagate drives in for me, but no . I haven't installed them yet, this weekend I will see.
  18. These things are good to see, and becoming more and more common. The PC Store that I buy all my stuff from, they will supply you with a system (if you like, I build my own) which all components are natively supported by Linux, and give you a good choice of pre-installed Linux disto's, which includes Mandriva, although they do suggest, nothing wrong with that though, ubuntu is pretty cool. If your in Australia and looking for PC stuff, check it out. AusPC Market Linux Section
  19. oooh, Me just submitted this, but now it seems you beated me, must learn to type faster. ;)

  22. It's very nice, I really like it, but thanks to adamw's quick work in fixing/getting fixed a couple of needed apps under Mandriva 2008, I'll be staying with it. I think it's the ducks nuts. Yes that is a bit of a pain, but, I don't mind noob-orientated/user freindliness, myself, but also the ability to dig in deep is also welcome, one thing good about Mandriva, it has the best of both worlds I think. I really liked 7.04, but now I move to Mandriva. Like I said, I think 7.10 is very nice, I only wish I could use more than 1 distro, but I like just having one, and maybe just having a quick peek at others now and then, but for this round Mandriva won the race for me.
  23. I have been getting this as well, all the time, some times contrib-updates, sometimes others, varying servers, never really took note, but the last was the first one on the list within MCC, Japan I think. Plus not being able to install certain app's because of this or that, very disheartening really
  24. But is there anything wrong with doing it? does it have any negative consequences? Just curious.
