  1. what you don't think the majority of both users don't expect stuff for free? i am not the only one who has noted this but the growing number of p2p users get agry when their access to "free" stuff is "violated". I am also not so blind as to realize that most users of linux relate gpl and other "free" licenses to meaning free as in beer. i also know that there are users of both that buy/donate or contribute their time they are not the majority though. like it or not that is reality.
  2. like by editing my post and then sending me an evil PM? :P
  3. well edit -->preferences-->helper applications should do the trick just select "new type" and enter what you need.
  4. feh so i misread it. like you are mr perfect tyme :P
  5. right on tyme. providing a widely accessible CVS version of winex for gentoo users (or anybody that has prepackages the cvs) is really stretching the goodwill of transgaming. it is CHEAP so don't be cheapskates. damn linux people and p2p people think everything should be free :x :x :x
  6. does demsg or ifconfig -a tell you amnything out of the ordinary? did you run depmod -a? etc.
  7. easytag, id3v2, etc. take a look on freshmeat.net for more ;)
  8. i use the one i post on my webpage
  9. 13.x is the development branch. dunno. likely not until there is an expressed desire of the majority of linux users to want to pay for software and they feel that they can make a go of a linux version. hmmm...there is potential for gimp to be professional caliber but there needs to be more work done. i know a graphic artist that likes the gimp but would never use it for his work simply because the colour palette does not match the capabilities of illustrator/photoshop. adobe's colour palette can match their colour standard's (don't remember the name of it at the moment). ps i know there are alot of people out there that do or will pay for good linux software but i have to be serious and say these people are not in the majority.
  10. its okay. i tell you though if dillo was more feature rich (ie. if it could do java, css, frames and ssl) i would use it solely. (well as long as its speed was not compromised)
  11. why should i be upset? why would it matter. ll that matters is debian is for you. why move to another distro if you are happy? debian is an excellent distro.
  12. ah ok i figured you were joking no offense taken really i just felt i had to voice some of the stuff i did. i perfectly understand the laziness factor i am going through it right now for the most part. to touch on my laziness comment though...it was just a general rant for the most part i see alot of smaller distros get snubbed for alot of silly reasons. it is even harder to take such comments when you know people are working hard to make a distro good. (so saying that i guess i should be less harsh on gentoo. i know people work hard on it but i just think it is NOT the greatest thing since sliced bread and really take offense to gentoo zealots shooting down other distros for no reasons other than not being gentoo. i got into and argument on JL between two people that use, and praise gentoo, to the point of annoyance about arch linux. neither of them had even used arch or done any significant investigation to it they shot it down because it was using prepackaged binaries and because it used i686 optimizations. after that i gave up trying to promote arch linux. with gentoo users inundating every BBS that is general in nature it just became too much of a hassle trying to promote any other option to users looking for a new distro. when gentoo zealots realize that people will use what they want to use and that any other distro is worthy of praise in some way i will stfu. ) getting back to your bias comments....true these people were not hired by any of the distros but i bet you they were not users of gentoo and were trying to point out that their distro was best. it is very hard to have unbiased benchmark or criticism but it is possible to wade through alot of the BS and find some semblance of truth. there are always pros and cons of everything manufactured out there. the only thing that matter though is that the user who uses the product is happy...not what some other dumb@$$ thinks. if i listened to all the naysayers out there i would never have even bothered with linux, never purchased another mac, never bought my xbox, car, etc. $cr3w benchmarks and reviews i say.
  13. hmmm... in your opinion maybe .... or is it just that you have to do most of the work to set it up your issue? lots and lots of people have no issues with it and use it for all of the tasks they did in other distros. we have also gotten a fair number of very green or brand new newbies using as their first or second distro. so obviously it IS functional. i can do more with it than my very broken gentoo or very old debian. everything works that much better in arch for me (a combination of good builds and conservative optimizations). in gentoo my sound never worked all the time, X was always crashing, mutt was very hard to get running, exim never worked, mplayer was not functional, tons of packages i wanted were masked. with debian i just felt i had stagnated. everything was done for the user in a few simple steps or i had no clue or was unable to change conf files because i was sheltered from setting them up in the first place or debian refuse to allow changes. as for packages....well thankfully there are some people out there that are willing to contribute packages to arch. with a small number of developers it is hard to get around to building packages ourselves. i bet gentoo was happy too that people did not have this attitude when they started getting noticed. i get a kick out gentoo people having the time to compile everything under the sun for their box and when their interest in a younger less robust distro such as arch is piqued they shy away because "it does not have what they need packagewise" or "they heard it was not functional". what a load of crap. arch is designed to for the user that wants ultimate control of their settings it has basic template files that the user can then alter to their needs...and with the build system it is easy to rebuild your system to even more optimized settings. i have never had a lazy attitude to any distro. if a distro does not have what i need i install it from source. with arch it is pretty damn easy to make a package. the template build file would show you that and taking a look at other builds shows you some of the tricks you can use should you encounter problem. MOST of the time though the actual build portion of a buildfile is no more than: build { cd $startdir/scr/$pkname-$pkgver ./configure --prefix=/usr make | return 1 make prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr install } and this is in the template already so it is usually just a matter of filling out the url to the source and plugging in the name and version number of the software you are building. i can't believe that people are to lazy to do that..... but oh well. /me mourn the growth of the lazy linux user population. hiding the power of *nixes is a bad thing it will lead to the user losing control and $$$$ as their reliance grows on others to allow them to use it. i am not trying to flame anyone with this just merely point out a few things. it takes time to learn and get comfortable when changing over OSes but never fear delving deeper into an OS. the farther you go the better it is for you and the better able you are to give back to thhe community. a year ago i was lazy but contributing when i could. now being a package maintainer for arch makes me feel i am giving even more bqack to the linux community. for the minor sweat it was to get my arch up and FULLY FUNCTIONAL was worth it. going through the manual step of configuration, learning the build system, etc has made me a better member of the community, imho. i am filled with more confidence and definitely feel more capable of helping give back what i have taken out. i have even been helpful to other opensource projects as well. delving further into linux helped me alot with compiling open source application on my mac. i have yet to spend a dime on software for may powerbook. in the process i help transcode more functional in os x and attracted osx developers to it. thanks to debian and arch i learned alot about using linux. unfortunately mandrake and gentoo were negative experiences but they did teach me stuff as well. just my 2 cents
  14. wahahaha....when i a benchmark NOT undertaken by a biased source. if some company hires another company to benchmark their product then don't expect a published result to come out until they are satisfied with the results. i don't buy benchmarks at all look at all those gentoo people who basically assume that only gentoo is fast---wrong. or look at those people who look at apple's processor speeed and assume that they could not possibly compare to x86 chips --- wrong. people talking on and on about how many fps they get in linux over windows --- so the hell what? the games still play in windows so who cares about the 10000 extra fps. and so forth gentoo and stable are incompatible :P anyway we all know arch linux is better than all three so why are other distros trying to impress the judges /sark
  15. man sudo there is a specific command for editing the sudp conf file, which is mentioned, should be mentioned anyway, in the manpage.
  16. No ones taken the bait yet Sarah give it more time?? heh. well when it comes to gamers any flamebait you throw out get ignored. once you think fps is the big requirement then forget trying to convince one otherwise ;) i was just bored anyway ... no harm dun.
  17. fps fps bah who the heck cares. you think your average game needs alot of fps. :P at least i have something to do when i go home.

    Xine

heh i will try harder next time ;)
  19. sarah31

    DVD player

    install libpng
  20. sarah31

    Xine

that is unnecessary now. the v1.0 library includes dvdnav which performs the same function as these plugins. in otherword xine has native dvd playback (provided you have libdvdcss)
  21. sarah31

    Xine

just so you know, every dvd player available can have this sort of trouble and it is not related to the app it is related to dma settings. almost 99% time poor playback is a result of dma and not the app.
  22. your problem is that you are incorrectly telling grub where your kernel image is. if /boot is on a separate partition you cannot use /boot/vmlinuz grub does not understand that because it is looking for it in /. so you must pass it the literal path (essentially you are tricking grub into thinking that /boot partition is /). so if you /boot partition is say the first partition on your drive you must put: kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdax (where x stands for the partition number of where your root partition is)
  23. plain old cdrecord without a frontend is best. i used lots of gui frontends for it but eventually just when the old fashioned cli cdrecord.
  24. this is from the notes in the arch linux menu.lst....i dunno if will help but you did mention your vmlinuz is on another partition: # use this if your /boot/vmlinuz is on a different partition #kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/discs/disc0/part3 ro
  25. it has become obvious to me that you didn't read what i said. i said ncurses should be done after the GUI as the GUI will definitely attract more users. Get the larger user base, then do work on things for the "fringe" groups. i never said don't do ncurses. and doing any one little thing differently will limit your features and users. it's a fact of life. so wait, you call gnutella slow and undependable, and then say it's feature rich? nevermind, i'm not going to bother. man don't get bent out of shape you want input i am giving you input. if you don't like what i have to say then fine. do you even have a concept of what people want? why not build something that people want and not what you think they want? a top down approach here may not work i am making you think of that. designing a gui before you have an application working is just plain silly. why not have the damn thing running first then think of how you have the gui? maybe people want a NEW media player not a media player that incorporates old apps (of course incorporating certain apps such a oggvorbis and such makes sense). does the world need a single app that is merely a simple interface for mplayer or gnutella/gift/whatever? if you incorporate things like mplayer how do you know if thats what people want? will there be options to use it as a front for xine? what about streaming radio? is it going to include that? (if you think this is a minor feature i can tell you TONS of people i know stream radio over the internet. i do all day at work) what about other media ripping? questions and comments that all these are. just things to consider..... anyway...i won't bother doing devil's advocate any more it just isn't worth it because your mind is set that you have the pulse of the linux user out there. ps. if you think ncurses is used by a marginal group of people i would like to know how you know this or why ncurses apps dominate so many interfaces for very good and well used applications.
