  1. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/insta...shots/index.xml Not sure when it will be final though
  2. I don't know I kept getting an I/O error. I did serveral different things and I still got the error. So I gave up.
  3. You know you are in musb and so am I we could just talk in there. lmao
  4. Sorry cybr but again. Kernel compiling is too much of a pain in RH.
  5. Even though Ubuntu is a wonderful distro I feel the need for more. Yea I know you can use the "heart and sole" of linux in Ubuntu the thing is, if there is a gui for it I'll use it. I feel that I am missing too much by that. I need to be forced to use the ol' cli. :D Anyways what kind of prompted me to do this was the fact that I tried to recompile the kernel in Ubunut and even though I read the wiki it still didn't seem to work. Now I have done compiles before with Slack and Arch and in those distros they seem easy as pie. I'll probably have some questions because as I stated I've been spoiled. lol I do have notes from before but I still may need some help.
  6. KDE installed on Ubuntu. No not Kubuntu.
  7. I still dual boot to fly MS Flight Sim 04 and to race nascar.
  8. MS copying stuff from linux again to put into their next release.
  9. FX

    VLC Player

http://www.videolan.org/ Installed on my Hoary install and it seems to work pretty good. Has anyone else used this?
  10. You have to add the user dad to your system su> useradd or adduser. Can't remember for sure. Then when thats down do the smbpasswd -a dad Or you could just 'smbpasswd -a <your user name> and then just move it to your /home folder instead of adding your dad just for that.
  11. Just did a fresh install of Ubuntu Hoary on my laptop. I was way to lazy to go upstairs by the router and grab a cat5 cable to plugin for the install. ( To pull some of the packages from the net). So just for poops and giggles I threw in the cd and wanted to see what would happen with the wireless. Well to my surprise the install detected the wireless and set it up and I didn't even need to have a cat5 cable connect on initial install. I thought that was really cool!!!!
  12. Ubuntu (if you like gnome), Kubuntu (if you like kde). Although kubuntu can be installed though Ubuntu with "apt-get install kubuntu-desktop." Then you have the best of both worlds I guess.
  13. Nominated Screenshot Kubuntu installed through apt-get. KDE 3.4. Still learning and playing around with KDE
  14. Well on a LAN or at least here on my home network I don't or never didn need port 22 open. Now from outside here and ssh'ing in from like school, yes I do. I have that open to the server though. I think I'v narrowed down my problem to the wireless nic card. I have to investigate some more, but pretty sure thats the problem. Probably with the nidswrapper driver. I'm not having a problem on here with Hoary and the madwifi drivers.
  15. Well I played around with the kids computer some. I uninstalled anything to do with ssh. Then reinstalled. Came to the laptop here and was able to ssh into it. I thought cool. So I logged out and then vnc'ed into the server (still in the same home and lan) and tried to ssh into the kids pc and I get "no route to host" deal again. I'm thinking, wth. So I closed out of vnc and tried again from here and no go with the same error. I started to think that the router wasn't releasing the port so I tried ssh'ing from here to the server and it was find. Then from the server to here and it was fine. So I tried again to the kids machine and still "no route to host" Ugh.... So I thought maybe it might be the wireless card in the kids pc, but the server has one too and that works fine. Only thing that I could possibly come up with is they are the same brand cards (netgear) but one (server) takes the madwifi drivers and the other (kids machine) takes the ndiswrapper driver. I'm at a lost.
  16. No there isn't a firewall. Some of the times it will work and some of the times not. Lately its just been not working. Confusing the heck out of me. lol By the way I would like to thank you for the reponse. I posted over at the Ubuntu board last night and still haven't recieved a response. Its a nice distro, but man not sure about their forum. :(
  17. Having trouble with ssh. I have a server (running warty) running and I can ssh from my laptop to that just fine. I can log into the server with vnc and ssh from there to the laptop (running hoary) just fine. When I try to ssh from either the laptop or the server to the kids machine I get "no route to host". Or another errror like this.... Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive). I get rid of one error and then I get another. All the pc's are on a local lan here in my home. Thanks ahead of time. [moved from Networking by spinynorman]
  18. No daily worry about viri, malware, spyware, trojan horses or any of the other number of things that might come with MS. Now worry about what the next O.S. upgrade is going to cost you. Here is a list of apps that do the same thing as the apps in M.S. do and all most all the apps for Linux are FREE and work pretty damn good. http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/table.shtml Do a search in the F.A.Q.'s here. There are alot of threads explaining the differences. One last thing. Linux is a learning curve, but once its learned life is alot easier.
  19. I noticed that too about Hoary. She was running a little on the slow to react side. Seems better now though.
  20. Hey you know me, I'll get right on that and I'll post back as soon as I hear something!!!

  22. Gnome 2.10 is at the Hoary repos for those interested. Im upgrading now.
  23. Well I suffer from burnout, but not from answering questions. I know I've always tried to say thank you for any help that I have gotten and if I missed a couple I am sorry. Thank you!!!! < and I really mean that> The burn out I've suffered with with windows/linux/computers in general. I think most of it was because I was off work for so long and had "too" much time to mess around on the pc. Trying different things and them not working right away. The two didn't mix at all. Steve I've always appreciated all the help you have given me in #musb. Most some of the time it was using your 'google goddness" and some of the times it was a linux question. You've been a great deal of help to me, along with others in the chat also. Now that I've started working again and getting away from the pc/laptop/computers in general things are getting better. Only problem I'm having now is I'm getting the itch to distro hoe again. <and I know you'll appreciate this Steve> But UBUNTU is the one still floating my boat.
