  1. I wouldn't go that far. There are several threads outlining the problem of setting up Shorewall via MCC. A number of posters, including me, found the only setting which would allow internet access was NO firewall. It was probably an exaggeration to say you have to download the sample files. The Shorewall site does recommend it, but I'm sure it's possible to tweak the Mandrake config files, if you know what you're doing. I decided to use iptables itself (rather than a front-end), as I was already familiar with it. I'll try to be more precise in future... :)
  2. To quote myself from another thread:
  3. I had the same problem while updating in MCC, but now I insert a CD beforehand and it's much faster! :)
  4. Stateful firewalling included in the 2.4 kernel. :) This article gives a basic explanation of how it works... http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32837.htm
  5. Try here... http://www.linux.org/groups/ This list is not exhaustive. If you can't find somewhere near, try www.google.com/linux and search for LUG and your locality... :)
  6. As a newbie, I found it a bit heavy going. My local W H Smith has several linux mags now, including Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-magazine.com) which seems quite newbie-friendly. I see there is also a US Linux Magazine (no relation, apparently) which seems to be at about the same level (http://www.linux-mag.com). Click on the current issues for a taster. :) No free distro tho'... :(
  7. Found this interesting link on PCLinuxOnline - http://www.divisiontwo.com/articles/barbieOS.htm Mattel's Chief Software Architect, Maury Cesterino: "Most girls up through adult women become frightened and confused, often hysterical when presented with a traditional command prompt," Cesterino explained, "therefore the console program available through the B-Menu in BarbieOS features pink text on a flowered background..." Order early for Christmas! :)
  8. Can't recommend anything personally, but http://lintraining.com lists lots of LPI certified training centres, including several in South Africa. :)
  9. See http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=8177
  10. I haven't used this myself , but according to the CUPS users manual http://localhost:631/sum.html, the following can be used to change your margins - lpr -o page-top=value filename ENTER lpr -o page-left=value filename ENTER I suppose the above could mess up your settings in applications, so perhaps you could set up a specific printer instance - lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-top=value ENTER lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-left=value ENTER lpr -P laserjet/lprtext filename ENTER Hope this helps. :)
  11. I know what you mean. I've been pacing up and down outside the delivery room... Hang on in there, Sue!
  12. Thanks, pmpatrick, for that clear explanation. :)

    Broadband

PlusNet is great value for money, and I've had no problems with them. Their standard home account offers lots of features for £21.99; but you can get Homesurf for £18.99! :) Here is a comparison with their main rivals: http://www.plus.net/info2/compare/competit...re_res_dsl.html BTW I bought an Alcatel Speedtouch because I wasn't sure their modem would work with Linux.
  14. The PCLinuxOnline daily summary has a story about a venture capital company investing in Microsoft, SCO and Drugstore.com (director: Melinda French Gates)... I don't follow it all, as I'm a simple public sector worker :) but it looks fishy to me. Perhaps someone with financial/business background can tell us what it means? :? http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?n...c=2104&forum=46

    ADSL Modem

If you have enabled your Shorewall firewall (as you should), that may be the problem. You have to download sample files from their website www.shorewall.net, and tweak them before it works properly. First, disable the firewall temporarily via MCC/Security/Firewall to see if the modem works then.
  16. In that case... It didn't apply here - it's just a device for getting into the sketch. The point was that the Inquisition was unexpected - it interrupted a sketch where Yorkshiremen were discussing "one on't cross beams gone owt askew on treadle". A non-sequitar. :)
  17. It's just that I've taken your thread off topic and when I try to stop, you ask me a question. I must be in a silly mood. :?
  18. Sorry, I'm showing my age. At one time, it was difficult to have a conversation without quoting Monty Python. :) http://www.ai.mit.edu/people/paulfitz/spanish/t2.html
  19. This is my last comment (no, really!). I admire the skill involved... but do you want visitors to admire the special effects and forget the text? If you must answer this, don't ask me any more questions! I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition...
  20. Sorry...but then I do have the attention span of a.... erm... I think the motion is also a problem... how about a watermark? I will now shut up... (sidles off to the offtopic discussion)
  21. It does make it hard to read the text as I'm distracted as I scroll... but then I do have the attention span of a.... erm... Could you decorate the side panels instead? Nothing ostentatious! Just a little colour, perhaps...
  22. I think it looks very professional... but I do find the 'cracked screen' effect a bit annoying! :)
  23. Thanks for the tips. I didn't realise how delicate these screens were when I bought it! I wasn't offered one and there's no mention on their website (or anywhere else). Can you get generic ones? :)
