    rar files

I was told by other folks that file-roller does not work, perhaps it was some compatibility problem still existed. Just grab rar for Linux in case it is needed.
  2. Yes, if a previous version of rpm package existed, you have to use the "rpm -Uvh ***.rpm" parameter to upgrade the rpm package. Only a newly (non-existed) rpm installation where "rpm -ivh ***.rpm" will work. Glad to help.
  3. Seeing the real time nature of Linux Kernel is taking places, perhaps more "production environment" use will become feasible, if the invoice is not a problem :P . Real-time use of Linux in embedded devices: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS6292137578.html http://www.eetimes.com/sys/news/OEG20030908S0064
  4. I think Bink Player is flushing the memory data back from swap partition into main memory. Depending on your main memory size, and the size of movie playback (I once played a 120MB bik file from a Taiwanese-made RPG game), your waiting time will vary.
  5. Download this rpm for Mandrake: sodipodi-0.32-1mdk.i586.rpm Normally I install with these steps: su rpm -Uvh sodipodi-0.32-1mdk.i586.rpm Try uninstalling the older package first if you still run into problems: As root user, rpm -e sodipodi (it actually will uninstall any version of sodipodi)
  6. The download link is not working, any mirror? BTW, from the screenshot on that page this looks like the old Eye of the Beholder series.
  7. Well I can export PNG image using sodipodi even under KDE, so I am not sure what's going on with your problem. Note that I use the Mdk rpm of sodipodi from the Sourceforge site, not from Mandrake Cooker. Currently I am running the latest 0.32 version.
  8. When you export the drawing to a file, enter the filename as "anyname.png", and sodipodi will export it as a PNG file. Here is one of my sample png export by sodipodi: http://www.geocities.com/zero0w/sodipodi/impro.png

    rar files

Ark will use rar instead of unrar. So you can install rar-3.20 for Linux by downloading from www.rarlab.com. Extract, su, and type make to complete the installation.
  10. It is Thunderbird, not Firebird I believe.
  11. Try NOT to boot in a linux-secure/linux-nofb mode during lilo, this might resolve your problem.
  12. So I guess DoD cannot deploy the research result involved Linux within a commercial setting such as projects with commercial weapon manufacturers after all; that doesn't make sense to invest in Linux if so. Still SCO is shooting easy target, and I don't think DoD or government (especially White House also running Linux) would be "easy" after all.
  13. So I guess DoD did use Linux at least in research environment and among some other situations.
  14. So what does DoD actually use? BSD? Or commercial UNIX? I don't think Windows can handle certain type of mission critical projects. This report ( http://www.egovos.org/pdf/dodfoss.pdf ) does indicate use of Linux (and Linux RedHat in particular, starting from Page 28 in the report) inside DoD, though I am not sure whether the definition of "production environment" you are referring to, and if it includes research environment and among others.
  15. It seems that starting with version 3.2.5 the Linux driver for ATi Radeon 8500-9800 display card will become officially supported via the FireGL driver, you can check out the ATi driver page to find out. And btw, XFree86 4.3.0 version is available too: 1. ATi Driver page http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html 2. Readme for Linux Driver 3.2.5 http://www2.ati.com/drivers/firegl/readme0325.txt 3. Rage3D Linux Driver 3.2.5 discussion http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php...readid=33708568 I suppose ATi wants to do more testing before making an official announcement. ATi card users may want to give it a try. Note: KT400 patch is still required for running AGP 8X with Radeon 9500-9800: http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/
  16. I think SCO should send an invoice to Defense department first; after all it is well known for using Linux/BSD and involved in development of a secured version of Kernel (not sure if it is LSM related). I am very interested to see how the military will deal with matter.
  17. John C. Dvorak talked about the patent protest, and indeed GIMP has violated a software patent where Adobe holds if this software patent is enforceable: Patent Riots of 2003 http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1236389,00.asp
  18. I suspect Mozilla is searching Chinese fonts in your system, but unable to find it. Usually it will take 10-15 seconds to load if Mozilla is switching system fonts (eg. to Chinese), but your case might indicate something different. I suppose just delete the mail will be a simpler solution, or install some Asian/Chinese system fonts so that Mozilla can find it - but it does not serve your purpose I suppose.
  19. This is my approach to hardware upgrade too. Sometimes I can get a cheaper display card in the second hand market (well nowadays most hardware are much cheaper so resort to second hand market is not very often). Most of my current PC configurations are 3 year-old now but they still runs great on Linux.
  20. This is temporary victory, but the war has not won yet. However, more and more sites are putting a page of protesting about this Software Patent matter. In my opinion, mandrakeusers.com / mandrakeusers.org should do the same before redirecting users to the forum. Spreading this message is VERY important because it would kill software competition faster than Microsoft FUD campaign.
  21. You made me go re-check it, and sorry I was mistaken :P , the CPU cycle time consumed was 30%, not as high as 40%. Someone has done an extensive FS comparison using Kernel 2.6.0-test2, which you can find it here: http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/715
  22. See what we are talking, another patent suit, though the loser is Microsoft, but it can get to any browser and browser plugin too (even on Linux), see the article at ArsTechnica: http://arstechnica.com/archive/news/1062344128.html
  23. ttmkfdir can generate those lines for each MS corefonts in step 2.
  24. Just to note that while Reiser4 could be a 50% speed improvement over Reiser3, it also requires more CPU cycle (over 40%, last time I read) to use it. There is a trade off here and there.
  25. Will this Linux client support the expansion pack MOH Spearhead?
