  1. You know.. since I am not an X expert, I am not sure what the problem is in there.. It's just weird to see both ati and radeon driver loaded.. maybe that's the cause of the crash? Anyway, can you post the /etc/X11/XFree86-4 file? Also check these directory /lib/modules/(kernel version)/kernel/drivers/video /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri And see if there is anything weird like the drivers not installed properly or in different color. At any rate, I just updated my friend's computer from 9.0 RC1 to 9.0 Finals and guess what.. the radeon is the only major problem. But, I solve it after one hour of tweaking around. When I left, that computer is running smoothly with 3d acceleration on and stuffs.

    New Laptop

Here is an information that may be a good news for your laptop modem http://club.aopen.com.tw/forum/viewmessage...MessageID=23574 It says that the modem is conexant chipset which could be good since most conexant modems are supported in linux The driver should be located here http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/ Check your pci ide by typing lspci -v or download scanmodem from this page http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz Good luck man... incidentally.. how much did you pay for that laptop.. seems pretty good.
  3. Can you try running it from a terminal by typing /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla and see what the error message is? I mean.. I installed texstar version of Mozilla 1.2.1 and all is well.
  4. Well.. it is a cooker rpm so it is pretty much constantly in development.. Don't worry though, in a couple of days there should be a newer kernel which may fix your problems (although it can add some other problems) :)
  5. Well.. fonts can be made beautiful by installing the freetype, xft, fontconfig and microsoft truetype fonts rpms from texstar's place.. In fact, that place have the newest evolution (1.2) available so you can install evolution from that place also. http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...drake/9.0/rpms/ and check the bottom to see how to add texstar's mirror into your urpmi database. I have been enjoying nice antialiased fonts since pretty much the beginning of my 9.0 journey thanks to these rpms :)
  6. In preferences (right click on the screen or the player) in the misc folder at the bottom there is a choice of starting in full screen.. try "unchoosing" that one.
  7. Texstar is basically a Texan who makes tons of rpms for mandrake and other distros. Most (if not all) of his rpms are high quality and worthy to be downloaded and used. Let's do this one step at a time, shall we? First, we put the texstar ftp site into your urpmi database. Go to http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...drake/9.0/rpms/ and look at the bottom for instruction on how to do that. Remember, you need to be root to do this kind of things. Second, if his ftp site is added properly, the next time you run rpmdrake (or install new softare in mandrake control center), pick all packages (third option) and choose sorted by source repository. One of the sources should be ttexstar. Now expand that sources thread and one of the choices should be msttcorefonts-bootstrap-0.1-3mdk. Pick that choice. You may also need to install cabextract-0.6-2tex too so pick that one also (if it is not picked automatically). Now, if everything is installed ok.. you should have the fonts installed. It should be located in /usr/share/fonts/msttfonts directory or something. You need to add that font directory into these files. /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/X11/XftConfig /etc/X11/fs/config After that, type service xfs restart And it should be done. If the fonts doesn't come out check the ttf section of this doc below http://www.mandrakeusers.org/docs/xwin/xfont.html#Add Hope it helps.
  8. Searching for other toshiba + linux links. it seems that you have a lucent scorpio chipset for your modem.. that makes you out of luck since lucent scorpio doesn't have a driver for linux as of yet. Sorry :(
  9. Update: Did it last night.. just do a regular update.. The only major problem is trying to activate his radeon 7500 again. (around 1 hours). A couple of minor niggles like pressing yes yes yes yes to 82 texstar packages (forgot to install his gpg signature), installing microsoft fonts, adding a mandrake ftp site to urpmi database (so I can do without installation cds) and bugging him to give me his root password. But it seems to run very very smooth after 5 hours of playing around. Yup.. I just love mandrake :)
  10. Well.. thanks for your advice. I think I am going to ask my friend first what kind of software he installed other than the ones I installed for him before making that judgment. If he installed very little or salvagable, I think I am going to clean install instead.
  11. What kind of soundcard do you have? Do you use ALSA for the sound driver or OSS? Anyway.. I try typing this command as root service alsa restart or service sound restart
  12. Ok, I am about to come to my friend's house where I installed RC1 and make it up to date with 9.0 Final and the patches (and texstar and plf and.. well.. you know). Now I don't want to screw up a perfectly good working computer that he has (especially after an hour I spent making his Radeon 7500 working). So my question is, how hard is it and how long does it take? Note that I am saying upgrade not clean install. So I probably just put the newest mandrake CDs and choose expert then upgrade. Is it better to upgrade or upgrade packages only? Anyway, thanks in advance.
  13. Yeah.. but all of them are GPL, not proprietary... so people can just take it and not even spread the word who originate the programs in the first place. I think Mandrake needs to shake up its image by doing something like copyrighting the mandrake desktop or alienate a pretty big part of the linux community so it goes into the news and reap the harvest of publicity like lindows did
  14. Since I don't have a dual processor machine and I never installed mandrake 9 on the dual processor machine, I have to ask this question. What happened if you use the second cd to boot instead of the first cd? Does it have a choice where you specifically ask to use the SMP or Enterprise kernel instead of regular kernel?
  15. It's probably because that since win2k is not installed in the first hd that win2k detects the primary harddrive but since it cannot find anything in there (in term of primary partition since it detects the FAT32 extended partition) so it asumes that the primary hd is corrupt? I dunno really, but does the system devices in win2k detect the primary hd? Windows of all version seems very picky in getting the primary partition for primary hd.
  16. I know that's a pity since Mandrake is as capable as these two distro, if not more capable. However, as a company, Mandrake doesn't have the same pull as the other two. RedHat and SuSE are bigger than Mandrake and those two has made much more headway into the enterprise / server section (where the money and the fame were at before). They have made the right partnerships (with IBM and other big companies). And they made news by creating controversies with RH and its bluecurved desktop and SuSE and its United Linux approach. Mandrake seems to play it too safe to be noticed. I also notice that the CNet "reporters" have as much clue as a plankton. Most of them don't even know what linux is, much more the different distros available if a boxed set doesn't smack them in the head. They are mostly microsoft shills anyway.
  17. Well.. motherboards made in the last 2 years or so have really simple bios upgrade methods. All you have to do is download the .zip or .exe file, extract the content into a dos bootable disk, then boot the computer using that disk and run the resulting .exe file and it will do the update automatically for you.
  18. It's /etc/lilo.conf Anyway.. just to make a good comparison.. here is an excerpt of my /etc/lilo.conf. I put my CDRW as secondary master (which is hdc) and my DVDROM as secondary slave (which is hdd). I want to make both of the devices to be viewable in cd writing software so I put them both as SCSI-devices. Your situation may be different but you should still get the idea First, change into root by typing su followed by your root password. You need edit the line that has started with the word append so to become like this: append="noquiet devfs=mount mem=nopentium hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" In other word, just add "hdc=ide-scsi" and "hdd=ide-scsi" to turn on the scsi emulation for both devices. After editing the file and saving it, you need to run lilo for the config file to stick, so type /sbin/lilo -v After the reboot, your CD devices is going to be detected as SCSI instead of IDE. Run XCDRoast or any CDWriter software to detect the burner and whatever CD devices you want to put as reader. Hope it helps.
  19. Checking the specification of the Hercules 4000 XT, I find out that it is powered by PowerVR Kyro chipset. It is not directly supported by XFree 4.2.1 as far as I know, but fortunately PowerVR released the driver for linux. You can download the driver and read the instructions from this site. http://www.powervr.com/Downloads.asp Unfortunately, the instruction for installing the driver is in .exe format so I cannot read it right now. But it seems the installation should be similar to nvidia driver.
  20. Ok.. you have the Apple symbol instead of the K menu that's understandable, but what's that? An IE Icon? AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! Anyway, if you want to be really really drastic (not recommended, but I told you it is a drastic measure), you can go to /usr/share/icons/<theme name>/<size number>/ and change the go.png in theme to a go.png that comes from other theme directory with the same size number. There may be a better way, but so far that's the only way I know..
  21. Wow, you really do know this stuffs.. well.. I think the best way for you is to join the cooker mailing list. I think the url is somewhere in the mandrake homepage. The mandrake community can always use more poeple like you so that the next version is better than the previous. As for me.. well.. I am not much of a programmer (in fact, I hate programming unless I have to). So the reason I choose mandrake is that it works well enough at the start but flexible enough to be configurable to my heart's content. I used to be like you, installing all the cooker packages, just because I can (had a really nice cable modem with tons of bandwidth) and I like living on the edge so to speak. Nowadays, with just a dsl with a fraction of the bandwidth and only one computer available (with tons of important documents in it), I don't dare doing that anymore. *sigh* Maybe if I have a second computer I will join the edge again, but not right now.
  22. Well.. texstar has created a test mozilla 1.2 with XFT built in. It's not in the typical directory, but it's located here http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...0-1tex.i586.rpm If I were you, I'll be a bit wary about installing this one. I have mozilla 1.1 working nicely with antialiasing on and so on. The good thing about texstar's rpm that it is installed in a different directory than mandrake mozilla 1.1 so at lleast you can uninstall it without affecting mozilla 1.1 that much. But since it iis a first release and require you to have XFT, it may not work as well as you like.
  23. If not all, probably a lot of them. Cooker packages is used for development, not for typical use. It's not a wonder that the size of the packages jump manyfold in size. Anyway, if you are using the latest kde from cooker, it should be kde3.1 RC something. not KDE 3.0.5 (which is the latest stable kde version). If it works for you, that's good. But I just have to warn you that installing cooker packages can make your computer unstable.. they are designed for development use.
  24. I think your antivirus is screwed up. If you check the kcore file using ls -al kcore, you see that it is updated every minute. I have a feeling it is something very important to kde, maybe something like a swap file or memory mapping perhaps? Do you have 256 mb of memory?

urpmi points to everything in the urpmi database. In my urpmi database I have the three cds, texstar, contrib mirror, update mirror and plf mirror. You can even add a cooker mirror in there also and you can urpmi cooker packages (not recommended since cooker is designed to be experimental.. it can really screw up your computer). It can be a bit of a pain if you want to install a specific package in which there are two mirrors hosting that package albeit with different version number (the only easy way to do this is via rpmdrake and choose that specific package with specific version number), but otherwise, if you put something in the urpmi database, it will be considered as a place to get all the dependencies from.
