    rpmdrake

I used rpmdrake usually just to find out what new packages are out there and to find out the description of the packages. I usually use urpmi for installing, upgrading stuffs.
  2. Peter Breuer is basically the Simon (forgot the last name) from American Idol. He is rough, full of scathing comments, etc, etc.. basically the person you like to hate. He is not a troll however, since he actually knows his stuffs. I basically just put him to the rank of arrogant elitist :)
  3. There are already people preparing for a non-profit linux version of that uses mandrake for the base. Like it or not, mandrake has one of the most solid linux community around. Even if mandrakesoft dies, mandrake will live on.
  4. I think that tip is only for SIS 7012 chipset only. I have a SIS 7018 chipset audio and it uses snd-trident module instead of i810audio module.
  5. Have you tried Yellow Dog Linux in that instead. It's not mandrake but if it works, it works. And that is not old mac tech at all I think. Linux should be installable in G3 or above, I think.
  6. Ok, this is from the security advisory from Mandrake. It seems that Mandrake has released RPMs for KDE 3.0.5a in the update mirror sources. So upgrade/install them now, especially if KDE 3.1 RC is not working for you and you want to go back.
  7. Let's see, 9.0 is released on late September. If mandrake still uses the 6 months release period, it's going to be around late March or early April.
  8. I hope this turns out to be wrong or doesn't happen. The register is basically a tabloid version of IT news, most of them are rumors and should be taken by a big grain of salt. However, this really worries me.
  9. Sam's books are usually a waste of paper they are printed on. Stick with O'Reilly if you really need printed books. Otherwise, either google it, search the howto or just ask on this board or usenet.
  10. Nah.. that's not it... that cd is basically everything that mandrake 9.1 will 99.999% sure of releasing (which includes kde, gnome, xfree, etc, etc). The rest of the stuff are voted by the mandrake clubbers which will make up cd 2 and 3.
  11. It seems that you are using the plain clock, try changing it to digital clock instead.. Anyway, I agree that it is either a font or configuration problem
  12. Wait, I thought bootsplash starts with mandrake 8.2... In 8.1 mandrake uses aurora I think.. Maybe it's aurora you should uninstall.. not bootsplash.
  13. Since you paused it (pause instead of stop I asume), I think that's the cause. It may be related to how xmms works or something. I mean decoding an mp3 is quite a stressful thing to a cpu that usually it needs a pentium cpu to decode the thing and play it on the cd quality stereo mode. Then again, I don't know much about mp3 decoding, so I could be wrong. Is everything ok again now after rerunning xmms and listening to mp3 again? What about after a reboot?
  14. Nope.. SCSI :) You know.. I can find some fast scsi drives really cheap.. it's the scsi controller that kills you in terms of price. Anyway, I kinda hate the multiple partitioning system used, I prefer to keep it simple, a 12 gig / partition and an 8 gig /home partition. I usually clean reinstall every 6 months anyway (upgrading to newest mandrake) :)
  15. Well.. it could if mandrake is using the slower release plan. It seems that under Marcello (the administrator for kernel 2.4) likes to take thing slowly, I think the difference between 8.2 and 9.0 is only 1 or 2 kernel version. Besides, mandrake kernels are patched to the bones, adding supermount, other journalling filesystems support, alsa support, etc etc etc.
  16. You know.. I am surprised that linux central doesn't give you the whole 3 cds. It should cost around 10 bux at most just to buy the 3 cd download version. At least that's the price in linuxcentral website. Anyway, you probably just need the kernel-sources rpm. You can just download it from any mandrake mirrors. It could be a bit big in size (around 20-25 megs last time I checked). Of course, if you only have a dialup account, it is preferable to buy the official cds and get it over with :)

    Limewire

To get files from usenet, first you need a news client or a usenet binary downloader. The only one that is even remotely usable for this in linux is pan as far as I know which should be installed in your mandrake. Next you need a good newsserver with binary news. I found that most isp are bad in terms of providing good binary news. You may need to subscribe to a newsserver such as supernews or easynews. If you are lucky, you may be able to find free ones but they will either be closed quickly or slow. Anyway, for more information, go here http://freenews.maxbaud.net/ With usenet, I actually found the complete macross soundtrack mp3 (there is no way you can buy the cds since they are out of print long long ago). I actually found fansubbed version of Gundam Seed episodes in there, too.. In other words, usenet can be a nice place to find stuffs (even pirated software) if you find the correct server.
  18. This I got from http://www.distrowatch.com Mandrake Linux has produced the first beta release of the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.1. From MandrakeClub: "The first Beta of Mandrake Linux 9.1 will be downsized to only one CD." So far only one cd, I guess this is the first try of mandrake clubbers having more voice in the distro. I wonder how well it will work though, since different people have different priorities. Anyway, you can find the iso and the checksum here. http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distri...drake-iso/i586/ ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/distribut...drake-iso/i586/ Oh boy.. I cannot wait :!:
  19. It's not great technology.. it's great bloat.. Like it or not, the capabilities of modern hardware surpass most software, so people can create more features, more eye candy, more stuffs, just to fill in the empty space. Not that I have dislikes of features and eye candy mind you, but there are some things that with a bit of thought or ingenuity, can be make smaller or more efficient. I think 2 gig is still enough for a typical internet station / office computer. I can install win9x with complete office 9x / 2k package and internet apps in under 2 gigs. Win2k eats hd space from around double digit mb in 9x to middle triple digit mb. I believe XP bloated it up even further. I still think 2 gigs is still enough for a full fledged linux workstation, as long as you use only lighter WM and put just one application for each purpose. A complete linux with XFree, IceWM, openoffice, and mozilla should be doable in 2 gigs, I think.

    Limewire

You know.. I think the glory days of napster and audiogalaxy is over. I can barely find the songs that I used to find easily with napster (old anime / japanese live action songs).. Anyway, I tried limewire and gtk-gnutella once.. it's ok.. but I prefer usenet.
  21. So he shouldn't listen to you saying "Don't listen" then.. making him listening to you anyway.. But if he listen to you saying that, that means he already listen to you before hand.. and ..... Error Error Error :!: :?: :!: :?: :!:
  22. Still 20 gigs for me.. sigh.. 200 gigs.. what can I put in there... I think it's not mandrake or linux problem to see if the hd is recognized, it's a matter of whether the bios can recognize it or not..

    SBC/Yahoo DSL

I don't like SBC at all, the line quality they gave me is ok.. but their service sux. If I were you, I try covad. I am using covad now, and their service is really nice. Once I have a problem about the telephone line and it is solved within a couple of days. No contract, too for the service I am using so that's a plus.
  24. A. Yes! B. PLF, Contrib, Texstar (but you already add those), Mandrake Club, maybe a bit of cooker and cooker contrib C. There is an easy to use urpmi configuration script in this page http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php You can see how it works while using it.. and you can learn from there :)
  25. I think modern linux support for NIC is so extensive that it will be harder to find a card that is NOT compatible with linux. Heck, I am using the built in NIC in the motherboard and mandrake 8.2 to 9.0 detects it flawlessly. Of course, if you want peace of mind, any brand name NIC will do. It's a matter of chipset really. Realtek chipset is basically used in almost all new built in NICs and some pci NICs. Anyway, if you spend more than 15 bux for NIC, you are spending too much, especially for such a low bandwidth device such as cablemodem / DSL.
