I reformated the drive and MCN now starts (though the bootmenu is text only) and it stalls when loading mandriva something about not being able to find unionfs.ko :(

I used VMware and it installed the following files: boot.cat initrd.gz ldlinux.sys livecd.sqfs splash.jpg splash.msg syslinux.cfg vesamenu.c32 vmlinuz but when I try to boot I get a message about no operating system being installed.....

That's enough...can it be installed from vmware as I don't have cds?

I want to install mandriva (or some other distro) on a usb drive so I can use it to boot on several computers (like the usb key and mcm-live) is this possible and if so how?

The other week I incendently stumbled upon the fact Johann Nepomuk was Hitlers great grandfather from his mothers side and possible also his grandfather from hid fathers side. Sorry I misunderstood, it is possible to make your own live-cd, Mandriva comes with the tools but I don't know how, never used them...

try urpmi kernel-latest kernel-source-stripped-latest or urpmi kernel-multimedia-desktop-latest kernel-multimedia-desktop-source-stripped-latest (not to sure about the correct name for this one :unsure: ) if you have your sources setup, for the latest kernel or a different flavour kernel

MS promisses support for I believe 3 years until after their next release, this is what you expect when you buy an MS product, Mandriva promisses 1.5 years until after release of the product, this is what you pay for too. Mandrake 10 is ancient, pcworld shouldnt have sold a product which the manufacturer stopped supporting 2 years ago....Don't complain to the farmer that the shopkeeper sells milk 5 days out of date... BTW did people try installing the latest or multimedia kernels (and source) because I believe there was a usb bug in the standard release kernel for spring (and 2007)

just run the windows program and it should automatically start wine there should also be an entry in more applications->emulators->wine btw what is the output for rpm -qa wine

you can hide non-upgrades (from view) and select the ones you do want regarding the second question from your OP: you can go to file->update selected channels

don't know :mellow: i believe the kernel didnt change much from 2.6.12->2.6.17 unlike with .18 and .21.... I did use 2.6.14-mm from 2006 contrib with spring and 2007 though very succesfully, was the only kernel working for me for quite a while. Btw Adam said to upgrade one version only (ie. 2006->2007->spring)

if you update you can keep the old kernel....

I while ago, unfortunately it didnt support synthesis lists only full hdlists, which made updating a bit of a pain having to download those 100MB hdlists but maybe synthesis lists have been added...

Does the mandriva control center run? Anyway you can disable the hourglass in the kde control center (kcontrol from a konsole) in Appearance and Themes->Launch Feedback
