This name 'GeForce FX - GeForce 8800' may lead to thinking that GeForce FX is the 'make' or 'type' and GeForce 8800 is the 'model'. And only one at that. But this is just an idea - I din't have problems getting the latest modules for my Nvidia.

Just my two cents... I don't know if this is better, but how about naming it 'GeForce FX to GeForce 8800' or 'GeForce FX ... GeForce 8800'

OK, I don't know if this is a problem/bug/nuisance or none-of-the-above, but for some reason the kernel version installed with the 2008 Free DVD was kernel-laptop. This even though this PC is a desktop one and I've heard a report of an installation where the hw was of a server type. I don't recall having any problems with the laptop-kernel, but still installed and started to use the desktop one and it's working fine. This other dude had his system starting to feel sticky and slow until he found out about the kernel version. He changed it to SMP-kernel and everything was working nice and smooth again. Both these installations were clean installations and not updates from an older system. What is it with that laptop-kernel? I don't recall any choices in the installation phase where you chose between different kernels... And what is the difference between the desktop and the laptop-kernel versions?

OK, first off, I'm sorry - I misunderstood your point. I thought I did just what you suggested. But now I see that you meant that I should uninstall ACPI... And how do I go about doing that? And to Greg (thanks for your advice again): I did just that (urpmi kernel-doc), but the cat... -line did nothing for me. It just gave a blank terminal page. I really don't think that I should go meddling with the boot parameters without really understanding what I'm doing. :unsure: But for now, I haven't had these weird problems with the boot since a day or two. I guess I'm going to wait a bit and see if the problem reappears... Thanks all for helping out. Appreciate it!

Hmm... Now y'all lost me. Does it or does it not affect the way the HW shuts itself down when asked to (shutdown)? I have never fiddled with the ACPI choice before, but when I disabled it, my PC was left power on with the shutdown splash pic on the screen. I had to manually press the power button on the case to turn power off. Now that I enabled it again the PC is shut down as it should be. So what's the ACPI there for, what's its purpose in life?

Good point from Valikhan; I enabled ACPI again (I don't like PCs that won't turn themselves off). Last time I booted, the system booted OK. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed...

Thanks arctic. I disabled acpi in MCC - I hope this will do the trick. At least now for the first time I booted it with acpi off, it seems to work fine.

I've had this problem now for a few days and cannot figure out what the problem is. Whenever I start my system and Grub chooses the default boot of Mandriva 2008 desktop kernel, the system will most often freeze during the first boot. It will happen at this point shown in the logfile at 09:01 - I restarted it at 09:03. Sometimes I've waited a long time (just let it load itself for a long time) until it starts Gnome (I autoboot to Gnome currently), but once in Gnome, the system doesn't respond to KB or the mouse. I've had to reboot to make it work. I'm suspecting the wlan is causing it (I'm currently using ndiswrapper - I used to use madwifi in 2007.1, but it would not work for my 2008 system), but cannot be sure. This happens every once in awhile, but cannot say, what's causing it to happen. Oh, I don't know if this is relevant, but the 2008 Free DVD automatically installed the laptop kernel. As this is not a laptop, I installed the desktop afterwards and have chosen the desktop kernel to boot as a default. Again, any help is very much appreciated. I'm a happy Ubuntu 7.10 user through VirtualBox in Mandriva. B) Now all I have to do is learn how to use it (out of all the distros I've mostly only used Mandriva). I don't even know where to find stuff yet (there is no Mandirva-type MCC or anything like that, is there...). But that subject is perhaps best discussed in another topic and forum. ;) There are slight problems either with Ubuntu or VirtualBox as Ubuntu gets aborted every now and then (at least once a day), but it is fairly fast to restart. I updated the system and it did reveal the update button. OK, I tried updating, but for some reason it said it doesn't have enough room in the /-partition. This is weird as there is a total of 2.5 GB of root-partition. edit It complained it needed a total of 1GB in / and I should free additional 300+ MB of HD space. /edit I cleaned the temp-folder (or something like that it told me to do), but no. The same error message. Then I even did a clean reinstall (that was Xubuntu 7.04 in VirtualBox in Mandriva 2008 host) adding to the root partition, but no. Originally I had these partitions: 2500 MB of / 500 MB of swap 5000 MB of /home Well, I'm downloading the ubuntu 7.10 and installing the 7.10 from scratch.

OK, I'll see if that's available. I only need to update the system first. I'll let you know.

Does it also work with my Xubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) installed in VirtualBox?

These problems continued with this particular PC and I decided to install it anew. Just leaving /home partition as it was. This time everything went smoothly and there were no hiccups. Before that - when I had upgraded from 2007.1 - I noticed that MCC looked different from my other PC with 2008. Well it looked like 2007.1. There is a slight difference in the lay-out of MCC screens etc. Now the update went smoothly. I easy-urpmi'ed new sources and managed to get all the updates available. This was something I was unable to do in my upgraded installation of 2008. I don't know what went wrong initially with the upgrade process, but I can recommend the full installation path (without formating the /home partition - if you want to keep your personal stuff)!

Here's my new (and shiny) Mandriva 2008. This time I thought I'd give Gnome a go.

This is something that has come up after I installed 2008, but I'm not really sure if this is related to the new Mandriva 2008. I have two almost identical external USB Harddrives (only difference is size) connected to my PC. Now the first one is easily mounted/unmounted in KDE desktop, but the second one is the problem. I cannot unmount this and this is the error I get: I don't know what I have done or what has happened with this. The only thing I remember fiddling with was the automatic mounting tick in properties of that device icon on my KDE desktop. But that's it... For some odd reason this external harddrive is mounted as /mnt/win_c2 and not as /media/porscheII as it used to be. In this screenshot the one on the left is the weird one and the one on the right is the one that is operating as it should: I have not done this intentionally, so what's causing this and how can I make it mount and unmount as I like? One other thing: If the HDDs are not turned on when I boot Mandriva, once turned on again they will be mounted at /media/porsche and /media/porscheII as they should be. So for some reason this one device will be mounted during boot as /mnt/win_c2.

Here's my thoughts on 2008. I think it's shinier (at least KDE) and better "out of the box" than 2007 was. I think that Mandriva team has done a great job! The biggest improvement from my perspective has been the compiz fusion! For some reason I have been unable to make 3D to work perfectly in 2007 or 2007.1, but now it's working fine! There are two points I didn't like in the new 2008 (please take this as a constructive and positive feedback!): 1) when installing the system I chose the KDE installation version in stead of the one I should have chosen, i.e. select individual packages. For me this was a bit confusing... I thought that that was just the major choice (I do use KDE most of the time, but want to choose to boot to Gnome if needed) where you could choose to install several other options as well afterwards, but no. I did a new install after I made that choice and could select freely what I wanted. (perhaps I would have needed a heads-up for that, but I managed OK in the end). 2) Why is it that the default choice of the installation DVD is installing 2008? This is a bit bigger nuisance than the first one. All the other Mandriva versions I've had (from 2006 on) the choice of install has not been the default choice and I have booted my PC without having to watch by the PC while it fires up just to choose to boot from HDD. I know I can take the DVD out, but it sometimes stays there for weeks (if I need to install something, you know... :unsure: ). All and all, I honestly think that this is by far the best Mandrvia version thus far! Good work guys! Me likes!

Well, I sort of have... I have the official sources from a different source than the plf ones. And then there is the second PC, I believe (not 100% sure though) I have different sources. I could change them, but now I'm thinking of waiting a couple of days and then if it doesn't come around I'll change sources.

It's most likely not the same issue, but here's my 2 cents. I've always gotten lousy torrent speed (be it ktorrent, bittorrent or aria2c) compared to ftp. I don't know if this is an ISP issue, but even this week when I was DL'ing MDV2008 DVD iso I received some DL speeds of 30 kb/s (and an estimate of some 2 to almost 3 days of DL time). But with ftp I got the speed of 105 kb/s and was done with the whole DVD iso in some 12 - 13 hours. I did the download with aria2c and can recommend it to anyone seeking for a new download software. If the download breaks aria can pick up where you left the dl the last time.

Do you know if there is a problem with the repos at the moment (and some 12 hours ago)? I did a clean install (exept for the /home partition) from the DVD on this machine and updated the sources OK. Yesterday I updated my second PC with the update choice from 2007.1 into 2008. That was OK I guess even though it took something like 2 to 3 hours to do so (from the DVD). Is that normal? What I did at first (before the update from DVD) was update the sources to 2008 even though I was still running 2007.1 (removing all the sources before that with urpmi.removemedia -a). I didn't update anything though (exept the sources); as I decided I would update from DVD. After the update I updated all the sources (with easy-urpmi and with the "no key -safe" sources that Adam posted) to 2008 and it all was updated in a second. I just thought that my updating the sources before the update of the system would have been carried over through the upgrade process from 2007.1 to 2008. I tried to see if I had all the components updated OK, I couldn't connect to the sources. The same now applies to this PC (the first 2008 installation) and I cannot connect to the sources. Is this due to the sources beeing unavailable (jammed because of the traffic) or is it something else? Should I re-install the second PC as a full installation and not just update from 2007.1?

Been there, done that. It's either our Firewall messing with me, or there is nothing there. I tried DL'ing it, but to no avail... I just got 3 or 4 KB and that's it! And all the rest http sources were empty.

What about ftp/http sources? When will they be available (torrents are out of the question here at work).
