  1. Just so you know, sinc eyou mentioned OCing. Many of the soyo boards allow you to adjust your fsb in 1mhz steps through the bios, much better than fiddleing with the multiplier (which you can still do if so inclined)
  2. SoulSe, other than completely understating things is correct. The CVS version sucks. Period. The commercial version of winex, available at http://www.transgaming.com includes MANY commercial, closed source, non-gpl .dll's and runs MANY more games than the CVS version or the .RPM's you can sometimes get other places. It's only $5.00/month and only a 3 month minimum. Frankly, if you want to run windows games under linux, winex is all there is. Some people will tell you that wine can run some directX games, but that's a load of BS. Yes, technicaly a tiny handful of 2d directx games will run in wine, but not realy. You should try the real version of winex. it'll only cost you $15.00 to try and you can download any new versions that come in the next 3 months, and the rumor mill is that there is a MAJOR update comming on the 22nd or the 23rd.
  3. whoa, hold up there, you're going about your hard drives all wrong. If you want serious high proformance, you're wating time with scsi and everything else. What you need is SATA (that's Serial-ATA) You can do SATA in a single drive configuration OR a raid array. There's a number of companies that produce boards that support SATA drives and my personal favorite is SOYO. I've used a ton of soyo products, though admitedly, I haven't used their SATA yet. As for 64bit, I'd wait for intel so I could get the amd for less, if you're not in a hurry. But don't expect MAD to drop the same day, it may take a while and people may not snap up those intels, so the diff might not be big. The only reason I'd wait is because I'm realy cheap. MIxed fealings about PCIe, maybe someone else can offer more of an oppinion. No, realy, don't get an ABIT. I know, I know. ABIT mobo's are realy nice. Yeah, everybody has one. WHoopi..... I'm telling you SOYO makes better motherboards. I build computers as a home bussiness. I'm telling you. At least go to http://www.soyousa.com and check them out. Best of all, they all play VERY nicely with linux and include some awsome hardware. What's wrong with the current GeForce? I have an old GeForce 4 and I get 45fps in UnrealTurnament 2004. The new GeForces get so many frames that most monitors can't display them all. If you want a radeon go for it, but I'd get the current GeForce. Also, you have to be carefull with the GeForce line. Each model actualy includes a whole product line of slightly different Chipsets. The GF4 is a perfect example. There's something like a dozen or so versions of the GeForce 4 chipsets, and this is further complicated by the fact that most nvidia cards aren't made by nvidia, the chipsets are sold to companies like pny that use them to build cards. A good nvidia is way better than the best ati.
  4. Yes, it is absolutely possible. I'm 99.9999% sure. The trick is to find the right settings to put in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Saddly, I can't help you there. If you're new to linux, let me tell you how to edit that file withought the gui loading. If you're familiar with linux, you can probably stop reading here. 1. When lilo (the boot loader) comes up and asks you what you want to boot, hit escape 2. you'll get a text promt and a list of the available kernels, just enter 'linux 1' without the quotes. 3. This time it will boot up to something that looks a bit like an old dos prompt. type 'su' and hit enter. 4. Now enter the following command: 'vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4' 5. Now you are looking at the text file containing all the settings fot the gui. I don't know exactly what you will need to change, but you're in the right place. Just hit 'i' or insert to make it so you can edit the text. 6. When you're all done editing it, hit esc, then hit ':' and then 'wq' and press enter. 7. Reboot.
  5. Well, to be honest I'm not sure, but for that matter, I've never realy ahd any problems with my kernel sources matching with any version of mandrake. If there's anyway I can check for you without compiling a new kernel (sorry, no time) I'd be happy to help.

    Power problem

If you're running 7fans, a 2.8g cpu and presumably a big video card, you're probably pulling a lot of power. How big is your power supply? That can cause all sorts of mysterious problems.
  7. I have it, it works great, let me tell you how. It's pretty simple realy. Open up kmix or aumix or alsamixer or alsa mixer gui or whatever mixer tickles your pickle and open up the advanced settings if they aren't open allready. Then just enable pcm and dissable ie98cap or something to that effect. If you can't figure out which one to issable, come check again. I'm not at my linux box right now. I'll post the exact thing to dissable tonight.
  8. I'm just posting this because I've seen a lot of problems lately with the same solution. If you're new to mandrake and having hardware troubles, especialy with hardware that 'should' work in linux, you should read this. If not, move on. The stock kernels for mandrake 10.0ce and 10.0oe both have a lot of bugs that prevent various hardware items from working. HP psc printers, some usb mice, some network connections, especialy in kde, Wacom tablets, and quite a few others The good news is that as of yesterday, the latest kernel on the mandrake update mirrors is verion 2.6.3-13mdk (that's a coupe of revisions above oe and 9 revisions above ce) That kernel, fixes darn near everything hardware related, and there are updates for all sorts of things, ESPECIALY if you're using 10.0ce In fact, there's so many updates for the community edition, I reccomend you throw your ce CD's in the trash and get your hands on some oe cd's unless you have a great broadband connection or can't afford $10 for the set at http://www.cheapbytes.com I hope this is helpful to at least someone out there.
  9. I can help you, I have the same printer and it's awsome. It's super easy. Step 1. open up the MAndrake Control Center Step 2. open the software manager Step 3. If you've done any updates, skip to step 4, if not, click on updates, choose a mirror, and let the update database update itself. Step 4. Close out the updater, and open the installer. Step 5 install kernel 2.6.3-13mdk or whatever the latest version is, and why not intall a matching kernel source while you're there? Step 6. Reboot. Step 7. Enjoy one of the best value multi function device in production. Explanation. It's pretty simple realy. HP has freely distributed drivers for the 1210 and they are included on the CD's for mandrake 10. IT's all automaticaly installed for you. The problem is, there's an error in the default kernel that has to do with the way it's handled. It's not realy a USB printer as far as linux is concerned. It's actulay a PTAL printer. PTAL is a port set up by the low level device driver from HP. ANyway, the newer kernel fixes the error and everything is cool. Alternatively to above, you could switch to the 2.4 series kernel that's on the CD's if you have too slow of an internet connection for downloading the kernel
  10. Using Winex is free. The subscription is for downloading the prepackaged files, which is ell wortyh the money if you want to use winex as the free cvs version does NOT inlcude several of transgamings proprietary commercial dll's which are required for many games. It's very easy to cancel, I've done it several times and there is a small update about once per month and major updates every 3 to 6 months so IMO it is worth subscribing for as long as you can afford it. Personaly, I prefer to use winex through a console as opposed to using point to play. p2p is nice and al but everything is stored in seperate folders, and some things don't play nice that way. I also find point to play to be cumbersome, though that's just personal prefereence. you should at least try it. Just remember that anything you install with point to play is ONLY accessible through point to play and it's seperate from regualr winex.
  11. Yes, there's a solution, but I can't tell you what it is, because you haven't told me what your problem is. The fact that it crashes means nothing. What I need you to do is to try and lauch the game from a console and tel me the error you get when it crashes. Then it will be pretty simple to gfix.
  12. i know that some usb modems ARE compatible andothers are not. You might try searching the boards for 'modem' or 'usb modem' and see what you come up with. However, I would suggest you go another way. Instead of getting usb modems, or sharing a usb modem, I sugest you get a serial modem for the desktoip and a pc card modem for the laptop. There are MANY pc card modems that work, I'm sure someone here can help you find one, and the serial port modems are easier to set up as a general rule.
  13. You may have heard this before, and you'll probably hear it again, but believe me when i tell you this from my own personal experience. GET A REAL MODEM! Regaurdless of the fact that they are easier to configure and 100% of them work with linux, you will also notice right away, better faster, more stable connections and you will upload and download at a greater percentage of your connection speed with fewer dropped connextions and erronious packets. We're only talking $50 and it is worth every penny. the modem iused for a good long time before getting broadband is the Creative Labs 56k ModemBlaster External. It conencts to a serial port, and is a dream to configure. There's als USB, pci, pcmcia and ISA modems that are hardware controlled, if you don't have a serial port. If you need one of those, I'm sure someone else here could reccomend one to you.
  14. make that AND, not or. You need libdvdcss, libdvdread, and some apps require libdvdnav (the good ones require it). My personal preference for dvdplayers is XINE. You can use the version on the CD's OR the version in plf, never found a substantial difference. same goes for libdvdread and libdvdnav. libdvdcss is ONLY available through plf. (unl;ess of course you want to find the source and make your life difficult.
  15. I think your biggest hang-up is going to be getting the pc to boot from usb, as many of them will NOT do that. If you only want it to work on one system, then that's easy, well, it's easy if it will boot usb. But you're going to lose a lot of the portability of mandrakeu move, and after all, isn't portability the point?

    tuxracer very slow

I think there may be something wrong with the 3d on your system as my fairly outdated GeForce produces around 2000fps in glx gears. If your card can only spin the gears at 400fps, I would think you'd get like 2fps in tr
  17. VeeDubb

    tuxracer very slow

Yeah, that's most likely. Let me guess, You're using an nvidia card and you haven't installed the kernel sources or the nvidia drivers yet? Not sure? Open up a console and enter 'su' without the quotes of course and then enter 'glxgears' tell us what happens
  18. I had usb printer problems with 10 as well. You might try upgrading your kernel. The mandrake kernel was up to version 2.6.3-13mdk last time I checked. CE only comes with -4mdk and oe only comes with -9mdk. If you didn't know you can't upgrade the kernel as an upgrade. You have to install the new kernel, then remove the old one.
  19. I installed the rpm, but it doesn't work in mozilla (mozilla-1.6-12mdk on ML10.0). I'm not too surprised since flash 6 didn't work on this version of mozilla or 1.4 It does work in Opera, though, which gives me hope. about:plugins shows: File name: libflashplayer.so Shockwave Flash 7.0 r25 Anyone know what I can do to figure out what's wrong? In the past was the problem the wrong version of gcc? I have 3.3.2-6mdk in case it's still an issue. Thanks for your help! Phil If you're having trouble getting it working with mandrake 10.0 you should post you problem. It works just fine for me using mozilla, as did the last version, which I was running untill I saw this thread.
  20. Yup, deffinately kppp. Far and away the best linux dialer I know of. THe other thing you could do is set up a symbolic link between whatever serial port that registers as or whatever, and /dev/modem
  21. You could always try installing with the 2.4 kernel. There's updates even to the OE kernel, so maybe you can get it running with 2.4 and then install the latest 2.6 kernel (2.6.3-13mdk as of yesterday)
  22. I second the referal to http://www.cheapbytes.com I have ordered from them sdeveral times and I've always been very pleased with everything. They ship very quickly, and the CD's have hnever had a problem.

    no dial tone

You couldn't be more right. I do a lot of computer repair on the side, and a previous customer called me after a particularly nasty thunderstorm to ask if I could fix her computer, which no longer responded to the power button. As it turns out, the power supply in her computer was dead, along with her big screan TV, Fax machine and digital cable box. Of course, none were surge protected. She was lucky, the TV was reparable for only $250.00, the power supply to her pc only cost me $10.00 and I only charged her $55.00 and I showed her how to use the PC as a fax. It could have been a lot worse. If her power supply had not melted, or if her pc was on when it did, she'd have bought a whole new pc, and let's not eve talk about how lucky she was that she could get the TV repaired.

    card readers

The 3.5inch bay ones are the exact same thing. You just connect them to a spare set of usb pins on your motherboard instead of a USB slot and your on your way. You just dump cards in the slot and they should be mounted. Occasionaly, with the internal ones, you have to do a litle futzing around with the fstab and mtab to get them to work perfectly, but it's not hard. Some of them work perfectly out of the box. Just depends on how it's designed.
  25. Yes, something else. look at http://www.shockwave.com imagine flash on stearoids combined with a system for building simple cheese-ball games.
