  1. When I installed 2008.0, it was the first time I renamed my home directory for the fresh install. I usually keep my home directory to that I retain my settings. However, many of my fonts now look like hell, namely the fonts used by Opera and Gnumeric. Am I right in understanding that there is a font package I need to install from plf? What is its name? Is there anything I have to do after installing the font rpm? Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  2. I got up early to start the download and start seeding, but it isn't there yet. :(
  3. I just looked up your profile. It is 1:18 PM EDT, but your Wisconsin local time shows as 05:22 PM. Somebody must have moved Wisconsin.
  4. Mondo also has incremental backup ability.
  5. I also swear by the mondo/mindi suite. I've been using them for years. I have restored files as well as back to bare metal. I've also used it to backup, change hard disk platters, and then restore to a new disk configuration. It is a great piece of work.

Geez, I didn't know that either. That goes into my Linux notes. Thanks much. :)
  7. I use gnucash, but it missing one important feature. There is no convenient way to purge off old data. I had to remove 2 years of data, one transaction at a time, and then put in a reconciling transaction to bring everything back into balance. It was a real pain, considering that I had about 30 transactions per month. It is hard to believe that there is no automated way to do it.
  8. My original message was posted before the author made make-generic and also couple of other changes. It does work now, and works great!
  9. The following is a cut and paste from: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=455656 "btnx (Button Extension) is a daemon that enables rerouting of mouse button events through uinput as keyboard and other mouse button combinations. For example, you can configure an extra mouse button to send a Ctrl+Alt+Right command to switch workspaces. This is especially useful for mice with more buttons than Gnome or KDE can properly handle, or mice that need evdev and a 100 step howto to register button events at all. btnx now supports: Logitech MX Revolution Logitech VX Revolution Logitech G5 Logitech MX-510 btnx will only work with these mice. It autodetects and autoconfigures the mouse." Its ubunto installation instructions are: $ sudo apt-get install build-essential $ sudo modprobe uinput $ wget http://www.ollisalonen.com/btnx-0.2.5.tar.gz $ tar -xvvf btnx-0.2.5.tar.gz $ cd btnx-0.2.5 $ make $ sudo make install I downloaded btnx-0.2.5.tar.gz and did the make and make install, but blow up with the make install. Obviously we don't have a "build-essential" but am not sure what I need. Do you know if an install of gcc would do the trick? Unfortunately I'm not at home right now so can't give the exact error message I get at compile time. I'm working under the assumption that this btnx can be made to work with Mandriva. It would be nice if it does. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  10. Has anybody gotten festival to work with pidgin? If so, how do you go about it. I am using pidgin 2.0.1, and installed gaim-festival-1.1-1mdv2007.1.i586. (Also, I don't know if festival is on a menu somewhere or not. I haven't found it.)
  11. Me too. The only time I did an update in the morning before going to work. (I did think it was odd that some of the same items had updates this morning that I updated last night.) Sigh.........
  12. Thanks much for the explanation!
  13. I've used main_backports in the past (actually by accident when I first set up urpmi using Easy-Urpmi), but I was given to understand that it was essentially to be avoided in a similar fashion to cooker. Guess I have the impression that it is kind of like "son of cooker."
  14. Was it in cooker? I didn't find it in the regular repositories.
  15. Well, you can always get a Dell, and then wipe the disk and put on your own favorite distribution, and be fairly confident that the components are Linux friendly.
  16. Interesting. Lots of people seem to be interested in backups today. Here is a quote from a previous thread that I just typed a few minutes ago as a reply to mystified: "Do yourself a favor and check out http://www.mondorescue.org/ I've been using this backup for years and it is excellent. It will backup to just about anything. I've used it to restore individual files and also restored back to "bare metal." It does it all. It is already packaged for many different distributions." By the way, it can also do incremental backups, and backup Windows partitions from within Linux. It is available for Mandriva via urpmi.
  17. I have 5 webcams, as follows: 3 Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX cams (USB 2.0) (Driver: dkms-gspcav1) 1 D-Link DCS-900 ip cam (Model B, Driver version 3.00) 1 Panasonic BL-C30A ip cam (pan/tilt) (Firmware version 1.30) Note that the latter two are IP cams. The only software I use with them are: CamE v1.9 Used to ftp images from my usb webcams to my web site. CamStream build 060613 Can be used to preview and ftp images from my usb webcams. I only use it if I need to preview an image because the cat knocked the cam and I have to line it up again. Too much overhead, for my taste, to have 3 webcam servers running. mcamip v0.7.8 Haven't used this yet, but may try to use this in conjunction with ftping changed images from my D-Link DCS-900 to my web site. The Panasonic BL-C30A already has this functionality built in. WebCamWatcher A self written Java application which lets one look at an unlimited number of webcam images on the net. This generally refers to ftp'd images -- not live video images. As soon as I get through screwing with this application, it will be available as the usual free download.
  18. Do yourself a favor and check out http://www.mondorescue.org/ I've been using this backup for years and it is excellent. It will backup to just about anything. I've used it to restore individual files and also restored back to "bare metal." It does it all. It is already packaged for many different distributions.
  19. When booting kernel 2.6.17.14 and attempting to configure the wireless I get the following: "Some packages (madwifi) are required but aren't available. These packages can be found in Mandriva Club or in Mandriva commercial releases. The following component is missing: ath_pci The required files can also be installed from this URL: http://madwifi.org/" madwifi-source-0.9.3-1.1mdv2007.1.noarch is installed madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv is installed, but can't find a similar package for madwifi-kernel-2.6.17-14mdv. Any ideas?
  20. Hope I don't confuse Metisse and Beryl in my reply. I was trying both of them on and off for a couple of days. Additionally I use dual monitors with kde and Xinerama. When starting up the system, the system doesn't restore applications to the windows in which they were displayed when the system was shut down. (This might just be Beryl, I don't remember now.) There was no way to right click on a title bar (or something else) to have a menu come up so that one could easily change the desktop on which an application appeared -- like a "send to desktop" functionality. (Both Metisse and Beryl) The desktop switcher in the title bar was not in sync with Metisse's virtual desktops. (Both Metisse and Beryl) I could not get the applications on a specific virtual desktop only to appear in the taskbar. I always got all the applications that were open on the system. (I could only get rid of minimized applications.) So, my taskbar was a mess. (Both Metisse and Beryl) On a dual screen setup, maximize would maximize across both screens, instead of just one screen. (Metisse only) When starting a new application, the application would start in the middle of the two monitors, instead of just one or the other. (Metisse only) This is all that comes to mind at the moment. I would be quite willing to give both Metisse and Beryl another try if these issues can be addressed. I'm sure they will be at some point, but I may just have to wait for another release or so. Hope I haven't confused the two of them.
  21. You mean that you didn't have to call someone in a northwestern US city and ask for permission to change your hardware?
  22. Ok, thanks. I'll monitor the mailing list and the 3D Desktop forum. Just wanted to monitor stuff related to Metisse and Beryl, to see if either of them get to the point where I could actually use them. Both of them have show stoppers at the moment. (At least from my perspective.)
  23. Is there a forum anywhere for Metisse specific issues?
  24. By the way, a little bit of googling indicates that Opera uses the QT libs.
