  1. thanks for the help. I was also worried about having to many partitions, under M$ I never made any, I just kept 2 drives, 1 for OS + APPS and 1 for DATA + GAMES. I think, I'm gonna keep it all under 1 partition with the exception of /tmp who could get fragmented over time. Using the external drive for /home doesn't sound such a good idea as I wouldn't have my configurations available while being on the road (rememeber I use a laptop). I have it all nicely up and running now, only sorting out some details. Linux has completely convinced me now, there is no need to keep M$ around for both Personal and Pro use.
  2. Acer build quality has been good to me ;) I have 2 Acer laptops here and both are running great. But yeah, there was a shop in the Netherlands that offered laptops custom build, so you could order them without M$ but they went kaput :( Asus and Aopen are offering custom builds, so you might find some over there. Acer is offering it but only outside Europe/US :( HP has only 1 model. I don't know of any others. But isn't there a policy that you can get a refund if you don't want to use the M$ licence that comes with a pre-build pc/laptop ?
  3. I know that the answer would be different for everybody but there are some parts that I don't understand. If I install software from RPM's, would these go under /usr/share/... or .... ? If that is the case then I would need to leave a rather big part of the disk for /usr, with the rest looking like this : Disk: 60GB /boot : 200Mb / : 5GB /var : 5GB /tmp : 1GB /usr : 15GB /home : 23GB (Here would be my Cedega C:\ Drive and the Vmware stuff also) I have an external disk of 250GB USB2 that would be mounted as /docs : 50GB /video : 100GB /music : 50GB /backup: 50GB /backup would be used for automatic daily incremental backups of the complete system. What do you think ? the use of the system: Normal daily use; web, music, office, .... DVD editing testing all the goodies of the Linux world
  4. I have tried it twice and went back twice to the 32bit edition. 64bit is still in an early stage, you'll find many applications that you'll need to tweak to get them to work. if you have the time and the courage then go for it, if you need something stable then stay with 32bit. As for the content, they did not include it all in the download cd, you'll need to install it from the UPRMI sources.
  5. I agree with you that the way those "cheapo cd vendors" work is illegal, maybe not for the law but rather from a moral point of view. But when looking at this from a commercial point of view the idea of selling the boxes is wrong, you won't motivate people buy making them buy useless things (for those with broadband). Supporting the Linux movement with $$$ is ok, but when I know now that I spend $$$ for something that is useless .... Mandrake has to produce the cd's, boxes, shipping, etc... all that costs money, so the benefit they will get from us buying the boxes is minor. They should drop the boxes, and maybe sell some cd's for those who can't download them. And why are there 3 different boxes, looking at the content of them I don't see how to can fill 2 more cd's in 1 box and 4 more + 1 DVD in the others. I would have done it otherwise. And yeah, I like the idea of the lazziness, I would have like to get out of the boxes a version I can install with all the drivers and then have an update service that will update all that to the latest versions, including the drivers without having the hassle of installing ATI drivers with kernel patches etc...
  6. So what is the difference then between the boxes that Mandriva shippes compared to those shipped by some cheapo cd vendors? The boxes are more oriented towards people without broadband who can't download the iso's, as everything in there is freely available on any FTP site? Same goes for the club or the update service, there is nothing extra on there that you can't get from the regular mirrors like ftp.belnet.be? In that case maybe Mandriva should bring out some other product range, or service that people can get to support the company. Now they produce cd's and manuals that most of us already have downloaded when they buy the box. Ok, there is a support service included but again, the best support can be found on the forums. I thought that I would get some extra's in the boxes, like extra drivers or tools. There are 3 different boxes available, Discovery, Powerpack and Powerpack + with a serious price difference between them, I got the Powerpack version at 80€ but now I have the feeling that I could have gotten the 45€ box and have the same content, or would have been better to get a 1y subscription to the club. Correct me if I got it completely wrong here...hopefully....
  7. Ok thanks, so it might have been better to wait for the 2005 (10.2) powerpack. Anyway, it'll give me a chance to test out the Club and update functions.
  8. I just ordered the Mandriva 10.1 Powerpack with the free Tux :woops: I know there are 6 cd's in there, but what is exactly on those cd's that I can't get from the download edition ? Another thing, would it be better to reinstall my system with those cd's and run an update/upgrade afterwards ? I bought the box mostly to support Mandriva.

  11. thanks, it solved my problem :)
  12. It's all in the sig  Soon to get a new Apple Laptop :bounce8:
  13. It isn't working at all, the cpu is only scaling between 1800 and 1600 mhz, even when the correct scalings are set in the config. Last night it worked for a moment by simple doing a Service cpufreq restart, but now it's not working anymore. This is starting to give me a It's no good for a laptop to be running at full speed all the time, they're not designed for that in regards to cooling. I might need to give up Linux for a while until this is fixed, a shame as for the rest it's fitting my needs. :(

  15. hmmm, restarted the cpufreq service and all is ok now [root@localhost cpufreq]# cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 12 model name : Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2800+ stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 802.008 cache size : 512 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 pni syscall nx mmxext lm 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 1587.42
  16. I tried your idea but it doesn't seem to work. Mine is only scaling between 1800 and 1600 mhz but it ain't going down to 800Mhz like he's supposed to. I checking the scaling frequencies and 800000 is in there. [root@localhost cpufreq]# more cpuinfo_cur_freq 1600000 [root@localhost cpufreq]# more cpuinfo_m cpuinfo_max_freq cpuinfo_min_freq [root@localhost cpufreq]# more cpuinfo_max_freq 1800000 [root@localhost cpufreq]# more cpuinfo_min_freq 800000 [root@localhost cpufreq]# more scaling_available_frequencies 1800000 1600000 800000
  17. I found where the PAE option is but it's grayed, I can't disable it, any ideas ?
  18. I had a look in /etc/acpi but there is nothing related to the cpu, only for the battery [master@localhost acpi]$ ll total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 mai 21 20:57 actions/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 mai 21 20:57 events/ [master@localhost acpi]$ [master@localhost actions]$ ls battery.sh* [master@localhost actions]$ [master@localhost events]$ ls ac_adapter power sleep [master@localhost events]$ that's it.
  19. Thanks, I'm gonna have a look
  20. Adamw, it seems to be coming back. I checked the kernel config file, and there is nothing for ACPI activated, how can I compile a new kernel but still make sure that the NX codes are disabled ?
  21. I just reinstalled Mandriva 2005 from scratch. - installed 2005LE without anything selected, only the basic console tools - configured network and added all urpmi sources including Thac's - installed KDEBase - installed all other KDE tools up 'till a full install - installed other software. Everything works great except for the login prompt, the system boots directly to a basic X with only a windows and logged in with my account. From there I can do ALT+F1 to go into console and SU + KDM which will give me the logon prompt. How can I make KDM start immediatly ? I checked in the MCC and KDM is selected instead of XDM but still Otherwise the system has never been as good a now, clean, stable and fast
  22. Maybe it's a silly question but I would be looking for tool that could let me create multiple boot profiles. When I'm over at customers sites I always use ETH0 but at home I use WLAN0 and in other places I should need Wlan0 but with another wep key. Now when I boot it takes forever as there is always one the interfaces down, and Linux takes +/- 3min to detect that. Any suggestions ?
  23. Problem went away by itself, dunno how.
