I just bought a new laptop and I'm trying to get Mandrake running but it won't recognise the SATA-II disk. Suse 9.3 was able to get a bit further by disabling the ACPI, but hey, running a laptop without ACPI ain't an option. After all the fighting with Mandriva to get my box here I'm stuck again, the shiny Powerpack box is just sitting there, unable to get installed :(

Honestly, forget about the external sound card, if you say it's a 24bit then I guess you're talking about the Audigy2 NX USB. I've been trying to get it to work on mine but no luck, the only way I got some kind of sound comming out of it was be disabling all modules related to the onboard card, but still the sound was horrible. Thac, I did, that's why I use your RPMS ;) It's a shame that things went they did on the Mandrake Club board because honestly I appreciate your work. Thanks to you I have know a fully working Mandriva + KDE 3.4.1 + all the tools, simply perfect.

Ok, I'll play around with it for a week and write a correct review.

I've been able to install it on my Shuttle. I thought about keeping it in a tripple boot with WinXP and Suse 9.3 but no, this thing just formated the whole drive. It doesn't even allow you to create partitions!!! During the complete installation process it asked me 3 questions, keyboard, install or not and reboot. Total install took 6min, total survival on my system before wipe out = 10min ;) After installation I did take the time to check the software that comes along, very, very, poor, nothing really usefull, Mandrake and Suse come with a lot more stuff. What really scared me is that they call the root user "Administrator", now I understand why they called it Lindows, and why M$ took them to trial. This is simply a cheap copy of XP. If they gave me the choise I would take XP over it anyday. Usually I don't bash distro's, I like to try them, but this thing is one complete useless contribution to Linux. This is not even good for new users, I wouldn't dare to give the cd to anyone. Distro's like Mepis, Mandriva or PCLinuxOS are far superiour for a starting Linux user.

You're right about that. For example my lappy, the only distro it will take without any serious problems is Mandriva 2005 :) I tried, Ubuntu, Gentoo and Suse 9.3 on it and no luck, always wifi and/or acpi problems. Suse 9.3 on the other hand runs nicely on my Shuttle Pc where Mandriva was performing poorly. To get wifi running on my lappy with Suse, (get ready for the laugh) I had to keep my external USB drive attached and BUSY, and had to keep on accessing files and folders so that a simple ping command on the wifi card would work. I tried with kernel option ACPI=NOIRQ but then I had no more USB. Gentoo would probably work but it must have been my über linux knowledge that got it broken Mandriva then again is a bitch to install on my wife's laptop who seems to prefer Gentoo (she installed it, could be that also ;) ) or Ubuntu. Still funny concidering that they all use +/- the same kernel and Linux base.

I just got a copy of it through the special coupon going around "LycorisWelcome". This should be the most easy Distro to install and run, shouldn't it ? :unsure: 1st I tried to install it on my Shuttle, it won't run, the installer quits on "No Screens Found", apparently a bug that Linspire knows about, it can't install on some Flat Screen, I tested on both a Sony 17" and an Acer 15". Then I tried to run it on a VMware, well it got a bit further but it couldn't recognise the SCSI emulated VMWare disk. So, this is the easiest distro to install

it's not 64bit related as I can install a 10.1 on mine. I think the i386 kernel is not liking the Xeon cpu, any chance you can download a Mandrake 2005 ?

Try this: press F1 at the first screen and type "linux vga=771", maybe it's simply a display problem.

I just gave the club edition a spin for the fun of it Funny, but I still got security updates comming in by adding my regular urpmi sources, mandriva did claim that there wouldn't be any updates :unsure: As I needed to have amarok, and I didn't think about keeping this system, I thought why not try to upgrade to 3.4.1 with Thac's rpm's, well to my surprise this went perfect. I'll keep it a few days running and we'll see, up till now everything looks nice B)

I just read that some people have trouble installing stuff like Amarok. Now I have more or less good experience with Thac's rpm's, they had a few minor instability bugs and they screwed up KDM, but that's not a problem, we have GDM. So that is leaving me now with several options: 1. Install 2005LE Official and upgrade with KDE 3.4 Club rpms, but I would loose apps like Amarok but keep security updates. 2. Install CLUB 3.4 and loose apps + updates but have more chance of getting a stable system 3. Install 2005LE + Club 3.4 rpms and upgrade with Thac rpms to 3.4.1, maybe less stable but I would get apps + updates What would you suggest. All this with the goal off getting a KDE 3.4(.1) system and keep all goodies I paid for (Updates + URPMI sources).

I'm nearly done downloading the Special Club Edition with KDE 3.4, how could I upgrade my 2005LE edition with ONLY the KDE packages as I don't want to loose my urpmi sources, updates, etc.. who are not supported on the new version. Or should I used thac's rpms ? if yes, what is the best way to install then, as clean as possible without kde and then through urpmi install thac's rpms ? Thanks for the help

I did something stupid I guess I thought that I would need a newer version so I loaded the one from the cooker, that just stopped the system from loading, I needed to boot from the dvd and reinstall lilo. I'll uninstall it now and give your idea a try aj. Thanks

ROFL I didn't even know there was support needed :woops: Ok, I just choose GRUB during the MDV 2005LE installation.

I downloaded a Grub splash screen and copied that to the /boot/grub directory, added the lines to the menu.lst file like this: timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan default 0 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/amd64.xpm.gz But now I only get a black screen, nothing is showing up, I can press "Enter" and the system will load but how can I display the image? Screen is attached, so maybe somebody can check if there is something wrong with it? amd64.xpm.gz

I used a calculation found on the net: screen size X 25.4 / 100 that gives for my 1400x1050, screen = 1400 x 25.4 = 35560 / 100 = 355 (no number after , ) 1050 x 25.4 = 26670 / 100 = 266 So my screen res is 355 266, and that gave me 100dpi

Stupid question, but how do you know what kind of sreen I have ? :s
