  1. OpenOffice.org 2.2.0 is released. Read the press release and the release notes. You can download it here for Linux.
  2. The open source ATI driver 6.6.191 has been released. This release will likely be the part of X.org 7.3. The announcement is here. New AMD/ATI fglrx driver 8.35.5 has been released too. Among its new features is the "AMD Catalyst Control Centre: Linux Edition" which is suppose to replace the "FireGL Control panel". Can be downloaded from here (x86) or here (x86_64). Phoronix has a review about the new fglrx driver and the new control panel. You can read it here.
  3. 2006 was a buggy release for many of us. One of those bugs was bad or missing package signatures. You can try the --no-verify-rpm switch of urpmi which turns off package signature checking. Or use a newer release\another distro.

AFAIK anyone can write into the Community Chat section. Otherwise you have to register as tyme wrote it.
  5. An mp3 file is an mp3 file everywhere not just on Windows. From your error message I think you should check your sound card setup in the Mandriva Control Center. Does your KDE have system sounds for example? You can check it in the KDE Control Center.
  6. Do you think it's a Mandriva thing?
  7. Do you use KDM? If you want those buttons in your menu then you have to. Or you have to install it at least.
  8. Executable files only go to /usr/local/bin if you compiled the given program yourself. If you install from a package the executable filr goes to /usr/bin.
  9. What's wrong with your K menu?Anyway if you still try to use 64 bit KDE you don't have any other choice than to use MDE repos cause Hawkwind doesn't seem to make 64 bit packages.
  10. No the tool was there already for some years now. It just didn't launch automatically, you have to start it from the software sources manager. Plus it didn't add plf so everybody was using easyurpmi instead.
  11. What's in KDE 3.5.6 which you can't live without? 2007.1 will be out in a few weeks. But if you can't wait and choose to install 32 bit OS then you can use the KDE 3.5.6 packages from www.seerofsouls.com
  12. You can calm down now. Mandriva Spring (aka 2007.1) will have a public non-free repo with drivers and Java and possibly something else. Plus when I tried RC1 KDE live CD and launched rpmdrake for the first time It configured ftp servers almost automatically including non-free. I just had to choose from the servers list.
  13. Maybe it's case sensitive Try typing xsane.
  14. There is an e17 snapshot in the contrib repo. But it's very early from march 2006. It's called simply e. Otherwise you have to look up the fan repos for a current e17 IMHO. Hawkwind used to do that but he's not doing it anymore.
  15. Check the permissions of the directory where the hard drive\partition is mounted. When I get this error doing what the error message says always helps. So since you don't have Windows and it's an external hdd, plug it in to a Windows machine and run chkdsk on it. See if that helps.
  16. Mandriva is using a point release cycle meaning the version of software is frozen in release time. You get bug and security fixes for that version but you won't get the newer version. That will only come out in the new release. In Mandriva Spring in this case. However with the 2007 release Mandriva created the backports repo for those of us who can't wait for the new relase. I don't know if that guide wrote about easyurpmi but if not then go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org follow the steps and add the backports repo. Firefox 2 should be in it. Note that using backports is not supported by Mandriva. It's only there for your convinience. Not that it would break your system cause it's stable software there. Right click on the desktop and create an icon for it. It's basically the same under Windows.
  17. For gcc you need to setup your sources first. Go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and follow the steps. Then try urpmi gcc again. For adding Windows partition launch MCC (System\Configuration\Configure your computer) and on the Mount poits tab click on the first icon which says something like creating or resizing partitions. Click on the partition you want to mount, hda1, and mount it. Note that you can only read that partition. If you want to write on it you need to install ntfs-3g.
  18. In the MCC (System\Configuration\Configure your computer) click on the system tab and on the system language (the icon with flags). On the window which appeared click on the advanced button. That should do it.
  19. You can use several package managers but the default is rpmdrake\urpmi. Rpmdrake is the graphical frontend while urpmi is the command line tool. You can find rpmdrake in the menu System\Configuration\Packaging\Install,Remove & Update software. Unfortunately rpmdrake was completely rewritten for the 2007 release and had some bugs in the time of release. So you should update your system. Visit the easyurpmi link on the top of the page and add additional mirrors (main_release, updates, contrib_release, contrib_updates and the plf mirrors). Note that you have to update your kernel manually.
  20. You can look in the "How about some cooperation" topic. It's 17 pages. There must be some rant in it.
  21. What if they would had read this: Ian Murdock: Debian "missing a big opportunity"

    Web browsers

It's not. Rather check your package manager.
  23. I've never posted news on development before, so this is a new experience. If you're interested and would like to see more of these, please write in the comments. If you're not interested or you read PlanetMandriva frequently anyway, please write that too. Since the Cooker Weekly News ceased to exist, Cooker the Inside Man has taken over its role and has proved to be a very good read about the Mandriva Linux development process. Now issue number six is out. You can read it here. Thanks to Fabrice Facorat. Also Vincent Danen has written a review about the upcoming Mandriva release: Upgrading-to-2007.1-RC1 (well, current cooker anyways).
  24. Two disks? I assume two DVDs, right? Anyway the package manager is rewritten from scratch and it had some bugs when it was released like it can't find some packages even if they are there. You need to update your system. Sounds like catch 22 but we'll help you with that. If you still think you got a bad delivery or something's missing you should write to the club forum because we are an unofficial fan site not related to Mandriva in any way. You can register for free on http://my.mandriva.com Not to mention that unlike the rest of Mandriva stuff Adam is responsive. If you can't get an answer from the support he'll take care it for you.
