Uiler
Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Western Digital HD. I remember reading about problems with WD ATA100 HDs and Linux a couple of years back. Does anyone know if these problems still exist? Thanks!
scoopy
Got one of them about 1- 1/2 years ago. Its a WD Caviar 20 GB eide/ 7200/ATA-100. Seems to be holding it's weight here against my favored Maxtor drives. I think whatever it was (I remember something about that too) has been taken care of. MottS
I have an old (2 years old) WD 30Gig. It turns at 5200RPM. Never had a problem and it is always on. MOttS
bvc
Never had one but the issues seem to be resolved.....no posted probs are a result of WD's that I can see. I sure remember them from a year+ ago though. I think it was kernel-2.4.18 that resolved it....just a guess though.
GuoJing
If you're buying one now, get the Seagate Barracuda V(or VI) 7200rpm 8MB cache. It's faster than the WD and you can be sure that there's no compatibility issue. It's rock stable, even after being tortured zillions of times by my crazy overclock (reboots/crashes :P)
SoulSe
The problems have been ironed out. I currently have a WD and a Maxtor in my Box, they seem to be equally quick (both 5400). Obviously, if you can afford better, go for it. But WD is just fine.
