I do not enough to fix this problem but have you tried GNOME, so at least you can finish your work? Do you know how to use urpmi to install gnome, if you have not already installed it?

Edit: And did you already try to login as a different or new user?

Either try a new user, or log out of KDE to any other window manager (or cli ), and

mv /home/wakish/.kde /home/wakish/.kdeold

After that you can log back to KDE, and see what happens. All your settings will be gone, but things like messages and kmail settings and mails will be safe at ~/.kdeold and ready to be restored anytime.

Unless this is the machine that failed to boot at your other post... hope not.

Sounds from your previous post that this was a hardware problem, but of course now your machine is completely dead with long beeps. Need to check, as this hints at some failure be it motherboard or power, as you say.

The beeps usually give a hint as to where, but the manual will tell you in troubleshooting section.

kat is a total nonsense, at least the way its implemented in Mandriva- you SHOULD remove it. KDE will work without it, of course. All kat is doing is searching/indexing, and if not properly built, eating your system resources like peanuts and crashing your desktop. It's not even an internal KDE application ( kat.sourceforge.net ), and nothing more than a KDE equivalent of Beagle. I guess Mandriva installs it by default to make the desktop more "user friendly", but on the other hand they SHOULD notice that their impementation of the application is total pants, shouldn't they? And by the way doing even the simplest search in here, you should see more than 100 posts shouting loud uninstall kat !

Simply open a console, and type in

su -c "urpme kat"

Provide your root password, and after finishing try login in again.

Scarecrow has it dead right. Kat has nothing whatsoever to do with KDE. Get rid of it , it is an abomination.

I suspect that the writers of Kat applied the K to give the impression that it was connected to KDE in some way. :screwy:

When I was using version 3.5.0, kicker was constantly crashing at logout from KDE, for no apparent reason (finally it came out being an internal KDE bug).

Since 3.5.1 though I've only seen crashes in badly coded applications- and I'm afraid you can find PLENTY of them. So, be careful and don't install everything you can grab without checking the program reliability first.

lol, I like that, straight to the point, and it made me laugh, I was getting some of these type crashes that the original poster was mentioning, but they never seemed to bother anything much so I just ignored them. But I will certainly follow your advice, and dispatch the Kat forthwith to oblivion.

By the way AussieJohn, I am just a stones throw down the road from you, Ayr, just south of Townsville, it's a small world...
