I have downloaded the 7174 NVIDIA drivers into my fat32 partition in /mnt/win_c

from root i have done the following:

init 3

urpmi binutils

urpmi kernel-source

both work, with one already loaded

next i have tried to run the new driver install with all of the following:

(I know I am newb but am trying to follow post by Motts on nividia driver install)

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run

./mnt/win_c/,name of driver again>

I have moved to the directory /mnt/win_c/ and tried to just type the <drivername>.run

i am stumped. I know it must be something simple that I am not doing do to lack of knowledge but have run out of things to try. If I just need to go dig some more just tell me and I will quit asking. thx for any help or direction.

now ready I hope.

after install 2005LE,  you will be presented with a login.

login with root hit enter

enter password, hit enter.

type  kde  and hit enter.

This will bring you to a root kde session.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a console (menu, system, terminals konsole check your source and kernel:

rpm -qa | grep kernel

mine look like:

kernel-source-2.6-2.6.11-6mdk

kernel-2.6.11.6mdk-1-1mdk

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If they are both the same, as above (kernel-2.6.11.6mdk) you are clean - go to step 3.

Dirty system:

using MCC (menu,system,configure your computer

click remove software, search on the word source, and delete the stripped kern.

Go to /usr/src and delete folders linux and linux-2.6.1.blah... to actually get rid of it.

Quit the MCC software remover.

Click add software, search on the word source.

add the kernel source : kernel-source-2.6-2.6.11-6mdk it will ask for and read it off your CD or DVD

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 3. check:

in a console run

rpm -qa | grep kernel

if they are the same, copy the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run to the root folder.

Log out of root.

X will not close so it looks wierd.

type ls (that's ell ess or LS in small letters) and hit enter. you should see your NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run there along with a bit of other junk.

type:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run and hit enter

on the first question do left arrow and hit enter to accept.

Just whack enter on the next 2 questions, but note what they were for later post mortem.

It should then slowly build a module.

It should then slowly build another module.

It should then tell you Nvidia is installed.

cd /etc

vi modprobe.preload and make sure it has a line for nvidia-agp AND a line for nvidia.

esc :wq to save esc :q to just quit without saving.

vi inittab and change the line from 3 to 5 so: id:5:initdefault:

esc :wq to save

cd X11 this puts you in /etc/X11

vi xorg.conf

assure your mouse is correct ("4 5" not "6 7")

change nv to nvidia

esc :wq to save

type

reboot and hit enter.

Hopefully that will do it for you.

i think the reason your system returned this

......................................................................

(I enter console after login

type su <pw>

it says root username

i type sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run

it says 'no such file or directory'

my copy of the drives is in /mnt/windows (my fat32 partition) )

................................................................................

..........................

Is because you forgot to do "this" at the root prompt

root@blah# cd /mnt/windows/"wherever nvidia driver is" "enter"

then "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run"

hope this helps

................................................................................

...........................................................................

i have a different problem regarding the install of the "7174" nvidia driver!

mandriva 2005 LE (download).

the actual install goes fine (compiles the module and installs it (great).

then i edit the xorg.conf file (only seems to need the (driver='nv') changed to (driver=nvidia), save it and well thats it.

but then i lose the xserver at bootup?

(never had this problem with mandy 10OE)

xserver (graphical display) worked before the nvidia driver was installed but afterwards no way can i get it back at boot time.

i have tried resetting the graphical display on boot with auto login of a user (as root) through the mandrake tools (i am a noob at the commandline) and it didn't work!

the drivers work fine i have opengl working fine, but i do hate having to keep typing "startx" lol

any ideas anyone please.

regards

reb

Sorry - menu, logout. That will dump you to a command prompt.

get this

kernel-2.6.11.6mdk-1-1mdk

kernel-source-2.6-2.6.11-6mdk

[root@70-33-9-251 largegroh]#

i assume these are same so will move on

looks good to me. you could also do a "uname -r" without the quotes just to be sure your system doesn't think it's something else. Edited by kristi
