  1. I want to install wineX(i think or a free something to do same thing) so that I can install and play asheron's call. I really do not want to mess up mu current install of mandrake 2005LE. First, will wineX allow me to run this game? I would need to be able to install some msi's and decal. Second, if there is chance of messing up my current install, can I install a second mandrake2005LE? if so, how? Third, I seem to remember reading somewhere on the boards about setting up a second user and cloning/replicating system to that user so that I would not mess up my current install. I may be crazy here as I am new and not always, make that mostly, not understanding what I read. any help with this venture would be appreciated.
  2. sorry. what I mean is install wineX and try a windows game without messing up my orginal mandrake. or perhaps, install some software without messing up my orginal install. In otherwords, have a user area(s) to try out these types of things without any worry about having to start all over with my current mandrake install because of crashing withl my experimenting. what I read before, or thought I read since I can't find it again, said something about cloning or replicating my current setup over to the new users. I may be way off base here. since I know very little abut what I am talking about I am probably just wrong.
  3. so you are saying that the only way i can have a way to try stuff out and still protect my orginal install is to install a second time? or third time? I thought for sure i had read about a way to have a second/thrid user to try stuff without affecting orginal. i must be going senile.
  4. i want to have places to test things without messing up my orginal.. i have created test and testgames as two new users. is there a way to have fully working linux systems in each/for each so that nothing that i do for those users will affect the orginal? if so, how?
  5. duh!! test went right in.. it appears that the word games is used inside mandrake womewhere so would not accept it. did not know that
  6. i will do that but they do not exist. i habve been working with only the one user i set up on installation. these are the first two i have tried to add. will try your command though...wierd[root@70-33-9-251 /]# edit: cd home [root@70-33-9-251 home]# ls -al total 16 drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 May 10 10:11 ./ drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 May 28 15:22 ../ drwxr-xr-x 23 largegroh largegroh 4096 May 28 18:11 largegroh/ drwx------ 2 root root 4096 May 21 15:12 lost+found/ [root@70-33-9-251 home]# no games, no test shlrug
  7. I am trying to add two new users, games and test, as per a tips and tricks suggestion for what do i do next. I have tried using the gui, MCC add users and also tried doing the same from root.l In each case i get the error message 'user already exists. please choose another user name.' i type in the following: full name: bob login: games password: (left blank as i do not want a pw) password: (same as above) login shell: /bin/bash (default) directory: /home/games (default) create private group for user: (tried checked and unchecked - same error) specify user id manually: (tried checked and unchecked - same result) i am at a loss as to what to try next. any help?
  8. ok I shutdown shorewall. went to menu-system- (can't find anything on configuration otherthan backups) What am I missing?
  9. ok. still looking for guarddog though. as for using web- ok will look later on that. is this where guarddog will show up? in the messages log?
  10. ok, here is the /var/log/messages after bootup May 22 04:02:00 localhost syslogd 1.4.1: restart. 11. ok, I did all that kristi suggested. shorewall starts up, at least according to interactive list of stuff on boot. running check of file sharing gives me all stealth. running common ports gives me failure. i have installed guarddog, trying to install again says it is already installed, but no protection apparently. I can find no where to check if it is actually running. am i missing something here? do I have to turn it on somewhere? if so, where? thx for continuing to deal with all my questions. i am getting better, just slowly.
  12. ok.. i guess it is already set. says basic set to standard and the other options are at default. i am assumming that default is good. so if i am correct the firewall part is good. virus protection is not needed, true or false? if false, use f-prot or something better? note: when u get tired of lmy questions just tell me to ease up for a bit. lol
  13. did not know mandrake had a firewall built in. how do i get to it and how do i configure it. sigh. being a newb again is not fun.
  14. cool. i have dl'd guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk.src.rpm and guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk.i586.rpm as they were both offered on site. I do not know which to use (or both??) or the steps required to install it/them. If you would be willing to give me the steps i probably/ may be able to follow them.
  15. can someone suggest one that has some good install directions? or any other suggestions for that matter. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  16. no was booting into linux itself.. i rebooted a second time and it seems to have taken care of the problem.. linux came up normal after second boot and windows still default.. all is good, i think. thx for all t he help. i will mark this as solved.
  17. thx.. changed defaultto windows and ran /sbin/lilo windows showed up as default with * so i rebooted. windows first and went perfect linux second and not erfect..it booted into colsole mode. i logged into root (may not have had to do it) and closed session and ended up in gui mode of normal boot before change. what might i have done/not done for this to happen? it is obviously all ther just not booting into right place at start. edit: boot console looks like this: [largegroh@70-33-9-251 ~]$ su [root@70-33-9-251 largegroh]# cd / [root@70-33-9-251 /]# cd etc [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# vi lilo.conf [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# vi lilo.conf [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# /var/log/boot.log bash: /var/log/boot.log: Permission denied [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# su [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# /var/log/boot.log bash: /var/log/boot.log: Permission denied [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# / bash: /: is a directory [root@70-33-9-251 etc]# cd / [root@70-33-9-251 /]# /var/log/boot.log bash: /var/log/boot.log: Permission denied [root@70-33-9-251 /]# never gave me a chance to login.. current lilo.conf is: File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default="Windows" boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/us.klt compact prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 devfs=nomount" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda "lilo.conf" 35L, 717C
  18. not sure.. this is what i have now, with the changes i mentioned. shrug. maybe i need some more reading. two separate hd's: windows is on hda 9primary hd linux is on hdb secondary hd as to the label stuff..obviously I am in no way sure of what to do. :(
  19. sigh.. i am slow i guess. would this be correct?? # File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda other="linux" boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/us.klt compact prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 devfs=nomount" read-only "lilo.conf" 35L, 715C ALL I DID is change 'other' to default and copy all lines to top. then change default to 'other' leaving all lines beneath alone. also inserted 'compact' EDIT: not actually done yet.. just theory so far.
  20. bad communication on my part. i want the windows to be default and to have to choose linux. just not sure if only thing to change is words default and other or if there is more to do. edited above post to show that.
  21. I want to change the boot order in lilo. this is what is there now: # File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default="linux" boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 devfs=nomount" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda ~ Type :quit<Enter> to exit Vim What I want to do is have windows the default (so my wife is happy) and Linux the 'other'. I 'think' all I would have to do is copy the 'other' section to the top and rename 'default' and copy the default section(current) to bottom and rename 'other'. However, that seems too easy and there is alot of stuff in those sections. can someone confirm my thoughts or tell me I am way off and give suggestions? also, where in the lilo.conf would I add this line to speed up boot? "compact" (no double quotes)
  22. thank you. sounds like a good idea. i am sure i can get into trouble with womething else. lol
  23. Those of you who have followed my bumpy ride through the 2005 LE install, new NVIDIA dirver install, mouse problems, etc know I am improving but am still very very much a newb. my question is this: is there enough improvement in kde 3.4 for a newb to try updating from 3.2? I have read through some of the 3.4 posts and it does not look easy but then I am not sure on everything I am readint either. so yes or no?
  24. well, I re-connected my coordless mouse and re-started/. all was well. re-started back to windows and back to linux several times.. all is well. i think it is magic. time will tell but at least we have more info to go on if it happens again. thx for help. will mark this as solved .
