Penguin Liberation Front

Recommended Posts

Anyone interested?

All the packages mandrakesoft doesn't aproove of (DVD players, movie players etc) are included in the PLF (Penguin Liberation Front). All are Mandrake specific, but you can always get the source and compile them if you like. Personal favourite is MPlayer, which I always install myself because it's the first program I use when I turn on a computer.

The address is: http://plf.zarb.org/ and you can even add iton your URPMI media.

Have fun you all!

Not only that, but it also hosts some emulators, icons, and themes for mandrake. When texstar didn't have the crystal icons for 9.0 beta, I just go to PLF cooker and download it from there. Texstar, PLF and contribs has become the primary mainstay in my urpmi database.

Probably licence issues. For example, if package A (that you use to view DVD) uses package or library B and that package is licensed or has some kind of doubt as to its license. Perhaps not open source or GPL exactly, mandrake would probably not want to include it and have package b owners come after mandrake for money later.

From what I've read in the past.

DVD license... You are only allowed to view DVDs with programs aprooved by the movie association of america. Since they all think Linux is bad for them, they don't allow Linux DVD players yet. None of the linux as of today is legal. So there you go. Who wants to bundle illegal software with their OS package? (Only Microsoft bundles viruses with their progs).

MPlayer is still under developement and is not acceptin any distro to include it officially, until they are finished with their TODO list.

P2P software are still in court, trying to find how to govern them. It's silly to include them, if the court decides it is illegal to share your stuff. This makes you illegal and viable for including it.

That's pretty much it. Use anything on PLF with caution!

PLF is unavoidable for all Linux users. And PLF is entirely USA's fault

USA have a way or making stupid laws (or "bills" it seems to be called over there).

As most distro want to be able to sell in the USA, they cannot include packages that go against USA's laws. But everywhere else in the world, PLF packages are legal. I hate Bush and his weak government, that is allowing the big corporations' will to become law

I think that all PLF should be available as an ISO (kind of a 4th CD) to be used in other places than USA.

Yves.

You know what... Someone has already thought of that idea, and it is being worked on. More information at a later date.

Regarding the extra Mandrake CDs, I think contribs, Texstar and PLF should be included. What do you think?
