Ixthusdan
I can hardly wait to see how this is reported in the news, cnet, and zdnet! Let's see, how can they twist this?
roland
Nice move. ok I was too pessimistic about french government. but that's servers right ? Next step is when it will try to install some desktop Linux or some free software like Open Office or Mozilla. It's more complicate. Lets see how it will do then when the basic civil servant is going to be involved and will have to change some habits
bvc
another example of the expected growth of linux ....as NT Servers support dies and a replacement is needed, why not use the best at a fraction of the cost all those looking at certs, IT positions, linux jobs.....sharpen your skills.....you are going to be 'sought after' and 'like gold' in the near future :deal:
SwiftDeath
Sweet! Thus U.S. should switch to linux too.
tyme
Sweet! Thus U.S. should switch to linux too. for this to happen, atleast within the Department of Defense, a Linux distribution has to get a C2 security rating (meaning it's possible to make it meet the C2 standards). Red Hat Linux is currently going for this certification.

roland
An other good thing is that the more the French state uses some free software, the less worried I am about software patent in Europe: Frankly I don't see the state to accept being bugged by anybody for a problem of software patent... bvc
Well, we're talkin servers here, so I don't see the software patent issue being moved.

roland
Well, we're talkin servers here, so I don't see the software patent issue being moved. wasn't there some patent issue for example about Windows network protocols that are going to be impossible to emulate any more (Samba) ? That would make communication between Windows and Linux/*nix more expensive. That's just an example, I think there is many more, even on the server area.
