zero0w
This thread isn't about how your favorite browser rocks... bababah...., but what's the problem with Internet Explorer in Windows: SecurityFocus: Time to dump Internet Explorer http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/249 Although the author recommended Firefox, others might prefer Opera. Regardless, you should take a look at what problem is associated with the browser bundled with the operating system, as I presume many of us are still using Windows in work or at home. gmac
from the article Second, if your bank (or e-commerce site, or whatever site that matters to you) doesn't work with Firefox, email, call, and write them (all three can be an effective combination) and, in a polite tone, inform them that their site isn't working and ask them to fix it. Tried that typical response is "they have to design the site so most people can use it". or we know there are better but our bosses insist on internet explorer. gmac
that's when you tell them that they're sites can work perfectly well with internet explorer AND all other browsers. you don't necessarily have to sacrifice compatibility with IE to have it work with others. The thing is I expect IT specialists to know that as a matter of course, anyone interested in computing at any level should be at least aware of linux but it's surprising the number of "IT consultants" that profess ignorance or are disparaging. I'm no expert but I would have thought it would be a relatively easy thing to do. Actually as the internet is used more and more for e-commerce I would have thought the security side would work to th detriment of IE. As someone that is required to register for a data protection licence it is slightly more than academic. If I am legally reponsible for the security of the data on my computer and yet am dictated to as to what browser I use who is actually responsible? Darkelve
My dad asked to install Mozilla today because, in a newspaper, they recommended not using Internet Explorer any longer 'cause of security issues... Another FireFox convert coming! lol :) Talked him into installing Thunderbird instead of Outlook (a.k.a 'Lookout!') as well Edited June 22, 2004 by Darkelve
iphitus
So far I have converted numerous friends to Firefox. They like it because of tabs, reliability, extensions and themes, The four greatest features imho
SoulSe
I've been bothering my bank, they keep saying 'we're looking into it' but their site works fine with Firefox, just a few javascript issues here and there. Hopefully they get the message now...

Seriously isnt it funny the newspaper recommend this and suddenly our relatives come over all savvy !!! like we havent been telling em for years! oh well I suppose it all helps.... Methinks they are loosing their minds. Or read too much Goebbels... or they worried about Brazil too much. Or they are smoking whatever SCO is smoking. Or they thought: well, nobody is telling people that IE is secure, so we'll have to do it ourselves... zillions of possible explanations really. A bit early for April's Fool though. alexpank
Nothing to do with security, but I always laugh when I'm writing a post in IE (I'm at uni, so I don't have a choice) adn I click one of the emoticons, and all the animation stops. Is this some devilish Linux trick, perhaps? While I'm only slightly off the topic, the uni I'm at used to have Netscape as its default browser, with IE buried in some menu, but for some mysterious reason , it doesn't anymore. Hmm....
gmac
I use mozilla and IE with wondpws 98. In mozilla went on to symantec web site and did the security checNorton has been recommended to me as the firewall to get- I got a message telling me they couldn't work with my browser, switched to IE and the check came bask as O.K. My question, does Norton only work with IE or somethimg? Since I use Mozilla most of the time there is not much point me getting it otherwise. Incidentally I have zone alarm installed which seems to work well with mozilla. I have recently installed broadband so security is now a bit more crucial to me. Gowator
gmac its the ultimate irony.... symantec want you to use IE becuase its insecure.... I dont just mean that in a bad way.... how could they scan your machine and recommend the right version etc if you were using a secure browser... if you use opera you can set it to pretend to be IE, any UK lawyers here will know Westlaw, the online law archives ... they will let you use opera/linux etc. but only when opera is set to opera. (clever) The rational behind MS and IE is giving power to the commerical customers, letting them see your computer while restricting you the end user. This is why the pop up blocking etc is hidden.. only people on MS support get to use this (in theory) this is typcial MS business model which is sell the technology to the big customers so they can trawl your PC....and meanwhile encourage them to have IE only stuff on the site thus propogating their market dominance. Its about time at least public stuff was legislated to follow W3W standards as a matter of law. That is any governement site, federal (US) county(UK) , town, city etc. etc. should all comply with W3W and be browser independant as a matter of law. just this one enforcement would cause questions to be asked and then the whole FUD around IE and security wil fall apart.
