MDK10 Official PowerPak...No Sound

I just installed MDK10 Official PowerPak (from MandrakeClub) on the 2nd hdd of my Powerspec 8920. I have a sound card on the motherboard that I'm not using. The sound card that I'm using is the Creative Soundblaster 16pci. On the other linux distros, sound for this card was automtacally detected with no problems: SuSE9.0, Libranet 2.8.1, Xandros 2.0 and RedHat 8.0.

How do I enable sound? I used MCC > Services and changed ALSA to run on bootup, but this didn't help. When I play Frozen-Bubble, there is no sound. ( I use Frozen-Bubble to test for sound when I install a distro).

All replies is greatly appreciated.

2 things you could check...........

do you have the onboard sound disabled in the BIOS? if not, 2 active sound cards will cause conflicts. also, if you're using KDE, in Kontrol Center->sound->second tab (i forget the tab name) do you have "enable duplex sound" checked? if so, i found that it can cause certain sounds not to work with that option checked.

Yep but do what i said too.

Just becuase its disabled in bios doesnt mean it cant be switched back on.

If you think this sounds strange think USB keyb or ACPI... you turn em off in bios so linux can control them... (seems bizarre )

Thanks both of you....

1. In the BIOS, I didn't find a way to do any changes for ACPI...nothing to "enable" or "disable". It listed something about Suspend State was ST3 or something like that.

2. Also, in the peripheral configuration, it states that AUDIO is disabled.

3. I didn't find anything called USB keyb in the BIOS (is this the USB keyboard? If so, I think I would need it enabled for WinXP-Pro and also my other Linux distros that have no problems (RH8, Libranet 2.8.1, SUSE 9.0, Xandros 2.0).

4. have lilo.conf in the same partition as my installation (hdb8 on a 2nd hard drive with 120 Gigs). I am using SUSE 9.0's GRUB to boot into all my linux distros. When I boot up, SUSE's GRUB is in the WinXP bootloader list.

5. In lilo.conf it states: acpi=ht. Does this need to be changed to something else?

6. The command lspci -v -v came back as "command not found'.

7. I notice listed below under lsmod is the es 1371 (ensonic1371?). The one on the motherboard is called the Integrated SoundMAX Audio by the manufacturer of my computer (Powerspec 8920 sold my Micro Center- a national US chain). In MCC >Hardware, Mandrake recognizes the Soundcard as "CT 5880" whatever that is. :screwy:

8. The soundcard I wish to use is the Creative Soundblaster 16 pci, which is working automatically in all four of my other linux distros and WinXP-Pro.

9. Here are the results that I got using a terminal. (My username is rclmdk10):

sorry I think you need to be root to use lspci....

What is does is scan the pci bis and show the devices.

I suspect your onboard sound might be swiutched off in bios but is being reactiveted (partly) by the kernel.

The USB thing I meant as a example. If you use the USB HID [human interface device] (a kernel option when you configure a new kernel - which i see bvc has helped you with :D) then you have to disable it in bios, same with acpi and stuff somethies..... In other words the bios sets an intial state as on/off and this can be software overridden.

What Im trying to do is to see if this is reactivated ....and therefore conflicting with the other soundcard. It can really be a pain to stop this but well persist.

es1371 33280 1

I think this is the ensoniq driver.....

on lspic -v -v (v is verbosity)

heres part of my output (the sound part)

hope that illustrates why its important to get this info :D

as you can see its pretty detailed and it should show if the deive is on/off etc. then we try and woirk out how to permanantly disable it under linux.... :D and leave the one you want.

Thanks Gowater,

If you'll look again at my command line results above, it showed that I su'ed to root > password > then I wrote lspci (space) -v (space) -v....is this command correct with a space before each -v?

Anyway, it came back as "bash: lspci :command not found".

I still want to use the Creative Soundblaster card and not the card onboard the mb.

I'm not in MDK10 right now but will be switching into it in a moment.

The command is documented as 'lspci -vv', but Gowator's version works too. You don't have to be root to run it, but you get a bit more info if you are.

Looks like a problem with lspci...

Thanks spinynorman,

1. I don't know nor understand what lspci is. I've tried it both as user and as root. I tried it with the command: lspci -v -v and also your way lspci -vv. Whatever it is, it returns as "Command not found".

2. I did happen to open up KMix by clicking on the volumn icon in they system tray. At the bottom it says "Cyrris logic CS 4297A Rev B". This appears to be a part of my Creative Soundblaster 16 pci card. Does this mean it is recognized the Sounblaster card and not the card on the Intel MB?

3. I clicked on Kmix's Help > Hardware Information: It states the following--

Sounddrivers supported: ALSA0.9 + OSS

Sound drivers used: + OSS

Do I need to change this to ALSA0.9? If so, what are steps to do this?

4. And now for my rant and get my anger of my chest: after almost 2 years with Linux Distros I get frustrated with every distro I start using. There are promises that the next version of the OS or the next version of the kernel is going to solve these common problems with common hardware. I spent $132.00 US in the CLUB for this Powerpak last week because of kernel 2.6.3. It acts like a Beta. I put MDK10 on my laptop: Toshiba 5005-S504 which requires ACPI in order to get sound to work. [NOTE: This thread is for my Desk computer and NOT my laptop.) Then DragonMage gives me the bad news that ACPI is buggy in 2.6 up to 2.6.5!!! How can Linus T. allow a new version of a kernel to come out with buggy ACPI when it was working in 2.4.22?

Yes, I'm ranting because I'm losing patience and am getting angry. I'm wasting my life on bugs in SuSE9, bugs in Xandros 2.0, bugs in Libranet2.8.1, bugs in Mandrake 9.0,9.1,9.2, and now 10, when I could be doing something else MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE.

I'm angry, no furious :furious3: !

BUT--I still need your help :help: ; I don't want to give up yet. This should be easily solvable. I've never had a sound issue on this computer with other distros. It is totally ridiculous that MDK isn't able to automatically have sound working when all the others can do it automatically.

sheesh!...how'd I miss this one?

will get you lspci ;)

I have the same card and ML-10 CE>Official>Cooker have decided to auto config it with the OSS modules instead of alsa as usual, which actually sounds better than the alsa

Your modules are loaded so it should work.

Post the result of;

lspci -vv

as Gowator suggested and also the contents of;

/etc/modprobe.conf

/etc/modules.conf

Here's mine;

/etc/modprobe.conf

alias eth0 via-rhine

alias sound-slot-0 es1371

install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe imm; /sbin/modprobe ppa; /bin/true

install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe usb-uhci; /bin/true

alias /dev/nvidia*  nvidia

/etc/modules.conf

probeall scsi_hostadapter imm ppa

probeall usb-interface usb-uhci

alias eth0 via-rhine

Have you tried sound with something other than frozen bubble? Pop in a cd or something! I believe frozen bubble requires alsa....you are using oss....no go. This means you'll have to switch to alsa to get sound with frozen bubble. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!!!

Thanks bvc,

I tried sound with a music--Josh Grobin CD and there was none (i.e. no sound). It was so-o-o- nice to see KsCD open up automatically and start playing automatically. How it has improved! and no confilict so far with data CD's (like the Mandrake CD1). I guess Mandrake has got its supermount finally working for both! (I hope I'm not wrong with this.)

Here's my modprobe.conf. It doesn't include a lot of info that yours does:

alias eth1 8139too

alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

alias eth0 eepro100

alias sound-slot-0 es1371

install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe usb-uhci; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true

Here's my modules.conf.

[root@localhost etc]# gedit modules.conf

probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd

alias eth1 8139too

alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

alias eth0 eepro100

alias sound-slot-0 es1371

I hope this helps Gowator and you.

I am much obliged to you both (something my grandmother, born in the 1880's, used to say in North Texas...now extinct from American English).

KControl:

On the first tab [General]: Enable the Sound System is checked/ticked.

Also, Auto-suspend if idle after 1 second is checked/ticked.

On the second tab [Hardware], all is unchecked, it shows Autodetect and Quality is Default.

The first thing I did was to make sure that volumn was up.

Thanks, bvc

:help:

why do you say this Gowator?

am I missing something?

it's the same card I have and his config files are correct?

Why would we want the sb?

and I haven't a clue what to put for an sb, other than searching for the answer.

Can my card run with 2 diff modules (not oss/alsa) but 2 diff alsa's or 2 diff oss's?

alias sound-slot-0 es1371

is correct, no?
