Have you tried this: Write click on the menu button on the panel, then choose "Switch to default KDE button". This will give you the small "star" only and take a lot less room on your panel. But then again, you may be talking about something totally different....I'm a non-techie. Richard

Unfortunately, I am baffled by all the details in KMIX. There is a tab called "Switches", but it does not have Video on it. The Video is on the "Input" tab. There is also an "Output" tab. Which items do I need to turn off under each of the three tabs? Thanks, Richard

Hi SilverSurfer60, Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, the sound is not muted; the audio slider is three quarters of the way to maximum by default. I'm very puzzled by this. I also have this problem with both flashplayer and RealPlayer on PCLinuxOS2007 after re-installing it. Realplayer works just fine in LinuxMint3.1 Celena (gnome, although I prefer KDE). Mandriva is my favorite, and I would like to get sound working in Realplayer. Richard L.

I prefer using RealPlayer to play RealPlayer videos (rather than Mplayer): both embedded videos and those launched separately in Realplayer itself. Sound works for me in RealPlayer on another laptop in MDV2007Spring. In MDV2008, I don't have sound for RealPlayer (although I do have sound in web videos that use Flashplayer). How do I get sound to work in the Realplayer videos, please? Sincerely, Richard L.

Thanks Adam, I clicked on the Storage Media icon and was able to access the Mint files from there. How do I do this as root with diskdrake and using a gui (i.e. no cli)? Valikhan, The trick of getting the Windows font from Windows into Mandriva (where Windows is on a different partition and on the same harddrive), is by going to the Mandriva Control Center >System > Manage, add, remove or Import Windows Fonts. Mandriva magically copies the windows fonts from the windows partition into Mandriva. (Note: my laptop here does not have Windows on it). I appreciate both of you for your input. Thank you Valikhan, I was retrieving the fonts from ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/seerofsouls.co...4brs.noarch.rpm and not from plf. This link was provided from spinynormans link to the article "Mandriva 2008: The Perfect Desktop" from howtoforge.com. I have solved my problem. I reformatted my harddrive and set up four partitions to install four distros. The first distro I installed was LinuxMint3.1 Celena. I used Synaptic to download the msttcorefonts in that distro. I also set up Mint to allow log in as root. Then I installed Mandriva One 2008 on another partition. To get the msttcorefonts onto Mandriva One, I logged in as root on LinuxMintCelena. Then I opened up two browser windows. In one I navigated to Mint's usr/share/fonts and in the other to Mandriva's usr/share/fonts/TTF. I dragged the msttcorefonts folder from Mint to Mandriva, and it copied into Mandriva's usr/share/fonts/TTF folder. I then logged out of Mint and logged into Mandriva. I opened up OpenOffice.org Writer and voila!...there were the msttcorefonts! This took less than 60 seconds to perform. No downloading needed. :D :P Hurray for having more than one distro on a computer!!! Each distro has its strengths and weaknesses. It's great to be able to use the strength of one distro to overcome the weakness of another. (Mint recognizes Mandriva and allows access to all of Mandriva's file system, whereas Mandriva doesn't allow me access to all of Mint's file system.) Again, many thanks for your input. I just installed Mandriva One 2008 on my laptop. I then went to easy urpmi, as I have done in the past, and did all the setups, including non-free and plf. The plf worked. However, if I do urpmi RealPlayer or urpmi acroread, it does not download. Also, how do I download the KDE games such as Kpatience, etc. All help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Richard L.

I have Mandriva 2007.1 Spring Powerpack. I am very familiar with using KDE's keyboard shortcut module to set up my own keyboard shortcuts. However, I am stumped in doing the following: I would like to set up a keyboard shortcut for my Home folder:for example Alt+Ctrl+H. Also, of lower priority, would be setting up a keyboard shortcut to open up the file manager Konqueror. The strange thing is that neither appear in the Mandriva's KDE start menu. If they were, then I could use the Command Shortcut tab in the KDE keyboard shortcut module; this tab allows you to set your own keyboard shortcuts for applications (I was able to set one up for Konsole this way.) [bTW, in Gnome, they have the option to make a keyboard shortcut for the Home folder and for Terminal. Strange that KDE doesn't. I have configured my panel to enable transparency and have set the tint amount to minimum. Most the the wallpapers that I use are dark in color near and at the bottom of the screen. Since the clock, KWeather (show icon,temp,wind, pressure enabled), and the minimized windows all are in a black font, I was wondering if there is a way to show these in a white font....and to be able to switch back and forth between these two font colors. Using User Agent Switcher. When I go to Fox News and change it back to default, I get sound but no video. I downloaded it today, so I have the latest version of UAS: 0.6.10.

I did not see the option for no bootloader. This is what I was looking for when installing. For what I could see, there were no options. If they were there, it wasn't obvious like with Mandriva. I thought maybe someone else in this forum had installed Linux Mint and could have helped me with their experience. I guess that no one has. Thanks, Richard L.

Tonight I installed Linux Mint on an older laptop of mine which has SuSE 9.3, Mandriva 2006, and Kubuntu. I'm using SuSE's Grub on the MBR. When I installed Linux Mint, it did not give me the option to install its Grub in the root partition, as I wanted to continue uses SuSE's Grub on the MBR. It therefore installed itself in the MBR. With some help, I was able to get back into SUSE and re-install its Grub to the MBR. Now I wish to install it on my Desktop, but I don't want this to happen again. Does anyone have any suggestions on how during installation to install the Mint Grub on the root partition? Many thanks, Richard L.

Thanks SilverSurfer60. I put them in the .mozilla/plugins folder; however, it made no difference, except that now I have the plugins in Firefox 2.0 now. Both Firefox 1.5.x and Firefox 2.0 will freeze up after the mplayerplugin has shown that the download for the video is complete and ready to play. Since the video won't play, I have to do a CTRL + ALT +ESC to terminate either Firefox. I'm thinking of taking the mozplugger plugin out to see if it is conflicting with the mplayer-plugin for .wmv files. I also plan to take out the totem player plugin, too.
