HJ
Now if I only installed gentoo from a cd . . . :D so, erm..., how did you install...? install gentoo from with-n another distro or from a live-cd distro (knoppix, pclinuxos), which is what i usually do. It's very convienent
mystified
Yeah, what HJ said. I have a very slow processor so a regular install would leave me without my computer for a while. I install from within Mandrake so I have no down time whatsoever. Works great! Thank you HJ for teaching me how. :D
Ghil Vertefeuille
installing from knoppix? could you tell me how? :P
bvc
I think the gentoo docs say how in detail....I think.
HJ
Well, to install from knoppix or any other live cd distro is pretty simple. Firstlly, just boot off the knoppix cd, then doh partition managment as descriped in the gentoo install docs, then just create a /mnt/gentoo and mount your intended gentoo partition there, and /boot if desired. Also, when you mount /mnt/gentoo/proc, do it like "mount -o bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc" (it's because knoppix doesn't use devfs) Then extract the stage tarball in there, and chroot into /mnt/gentoo, then follow the rest of the install guide. jlc
ISO server on BMG http://breakmygentoo.net/gentoo-anaconda/ If you want to use GRP packages like gnome/kde/mozilla/openoffice, go to a gentoo mirror and grab the same "arch" cd2 and just follow these instructions http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/releases/x86.../2004.0/livecd/ mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom cd /mnt/cdrom/ cp portage-20040223.tar.bz2 /usr/ && rm -rf /usr/portage cd /usr/ tar xvfj portage-20040223.tar.bz2 mkdir /usr/portage/packages/ cp -rf /mnt/cdrom/All /usr/portage/packages Edited March 18, 2004 by cybrjackle
