Personally, i thought it was funny how they think Windows is God compared to Linux, i have only been using linux for a couple of months (i have had it installed for a few years, but i never really messed around with it like i am now) and i am loving it. Being able to control everything and learning something that is quite hard to grasp at first is fun. I remember working in tech support during my last year in highschool/ first year in college this guy was talking to me, and he was like "F*** microsoft nad blah blah" he was so much fun to talk to. I talked to him on the phone for like hours about stuff, it was fun.

I loved the one about why most linux zealots are european. I quote

"Most Linux zealots are European because Europe is a continent populated by liberal socialists that hate capitalism and corporations. Europeans oppose intellectual property rights and the rights of owners of intellectual property to profit off of their intellectual property. Europeans dislike merchants. European liberals believe all intellectual property should be public domain."

Whats depressing is that you know the guy must be intelligent, it would be funny but I think he believes it. But do you wonder if Europeans occasionally perceive America as a country peopled by semi literate (liberal socialist?), gun-toting paranoid nutters ready to gun down anybody that disagrees with anything they say, and no I don't believe you are.

Joking aside can't they perceive open source as a different business model that has a place in a competitive market place. If taken up I could see a lot of scope for new businesses advising and implementing open source solutions for businesses. Most of the computer consultants I meet that are hostile to linux are wetting themselves because they know they can't compete and can see their income streams disappearing. Well that what competition in business means. The IT industry is changing and the pace of change is increasing adapt or die.

gmac, that is the real issue in all of this: changing income streams.

A weakness of the capitalist, (you'll never hear me say that again!) is that once an income stream is identified and successfully used, all changes to that stream are thought of as evil! It's like when we stopped using horses for daily life, the stable owners and the feed association would have gone to the government to prevent those nasty automobiles from being used!

IT is changing. Those who change with it will make money. Those who do not change or fight the change will disappear.

The whole concept of a rant sight is a little juvenile for my tastes. I'm afraid I could not stay there very long, and certainly had no compulsion to post!

My toy is better than your toy! Is not! Is too! Is not! Is too! Is not! Is too!

Yikes!!

ixthusdan, you are right, and there are many more weaknesses of capitalism too that are getting exploited every single day. I recently read the Communist Maefesto, and boy, did it wake me up. I was like, omg, Marx is right on a lot of the things he says about capitalism.

However, it would be interesting to see America under a communist ecomony, not government mind you, just ecomnomy. In fact, probably in the next century you will see US heading towards it, as the gap between the lower and upper class continues to widen, and the dwendling middle class slowly sinks to the lower class, it will be interesting times. But most likely something will happen to balance them out.

My point is that yes i agree with you guys that Linux is going to take a big chuck of the market soon, and it is best to get on the band wagon now and not miss it.

Did you say Marx?

B)

Karl Marx would not advocate a linux type of os!! In fact, the control of ms is more like Marx! How else could the plague of alienated humanity be purged from the stream of human consciousness?

But, this is off-topic for this thread! :D

great site too.

I don't use Window$ anymore except for NHL2004. Sorry love hockey :woops:

I must admit in my youthful past that I may have "misplaced" my product license :deal:

But as I got older I wanted to make sure I had them for all my software. Mainly for the upgrade and support stuff. TO be honest I have never registered any software I have bought. I just don't like given my personal info out.

I have had some companies require me to give my personal info to get over the phone support. Id say no way Ill buy a different product.

Scared to find out M$ may have not cared and "identified" my even though I said not to.

Back in the day when you got windows95 on floppy disks (yea I was one of them) anti piracy was not so good. All the companies are getting better now. With M$ "product activation" leading the pack.

I don't have a problem with people choosing Linux...

...but I do have a problem with people who choose to stop using Microsoft products and go the Linux route and still continue to bitch about Microsoft. If you don't like Microsoft then don't buy and use their products and stop bitching. It's as simple as that."

The one thing that really antagonises me about microsoft is that they don't want me to have a choice. I'm stuck with it and will probably have to upgrade at some point to windows XP purely because there is one eseential programme that I need to use.

When I ask the techie guys at the provider why they don't use linux they often do themselves but have to provide what the market demands, or what they are told to by thge marketing people. In buying a computer now the expensive part is the software if Micrisoft implement the yearly licence renewal for the worktop they are going to price themselves out of the market. Give them credit for making computers accessible to a mass market but all monopolists eventually fail if market forces are left to work.

Despite America having the toughest anti trust laws in the world they don't seem able to apply them effectively to microsoft.

" I recently read the Communist Maefesto, and boy, did it wake me up. I was like, omg, Marx is right on a lot of the things he says about capitalism. " Remember the time he was writing in, no universal suffrage and monarchs still ruled. Most of his critics have never read him, nor have most so called marxists. If you have an open mind don't let it be obscured by the dust.

yes, the f**kmicrosoft site was pretty interesting, and the Really Hidden Files is definately scary. Every day I learn something else about my winbox that shows it is really my enemy.

At least I have abandoned MS Office on my winbox, and am now using OOo 1.1. Guess its time now to dump IE and install Moz Firebird or something, after I go thru all the hassle of getting rid of my hidden history. I don't think I've been a naughty boy in quite some time, but might as well be safe....
