  1. for teh persons interested: free respository especially developped for lindows: http://www.lindowsdownload.com/
  2. Heya, thx, I'll suppose I'll choose Mandrake.... :). Now, I saw taht rpmfind.net has the isos for Mandrake 10.0-rc1. I'm considering of downloading those :). Ofcourse they have to be quite stable .... so, opinions on this ...? Why do I want to install them? They have the new 2.6 kernel and the new kde 3.2. Ofcourse I could update from 9.2 ot use those things, but then I have to donwload them again... And I checked tpmfind.net and ftp.belnet.be and can't seem to find 9.2 ..although with some searching I'll find them I'll suppose .... :) Update: found them already :D. Their date is 7-11-2003. Is it possible they include the updates or are those still only available to club-members or mayeb this will remain so?
  3. yes, you can use apt-get, but lindows promotes a lot it's click'n-run installation system...I believe. Never have used it, so can not judge these things. I have downloaded this lindows edition myself, but still have to test it.
  4. I just read that pclinuos is at the moment (anyway the latest version) not available in Dutch. So, I probably won't use it now except if someone convinces me it is available in Dutch :). I'm also very interested in Mepis. It seems very nice. So any comments on this are also very welcome ... Does Mepis has supermount or is it easily installable? I also thought of Ark linux ..any others are also welcome. Thanks again Else it will be mandrake 9.2 I think.
  5. Hi, I'm going to install linux on a friends computer in tyhe next days. I first thought of Mandrake since I think it is quite easy to use and it's the distro I work with myself. I haven't yet worked with any other distro's .... I suppose all distro's bare simialrity since they are based on the same things and I maybe am capable of handling things on a lower level than gui, so I'll leave them open too if you suggest one. I'm not considering gentoo or other distro's from whihc you can only install from source §ok, you could install rpm or other packagemanagement systems that can install binarty programs, but that isn't what gentoo, ..was intended for), since it require too much time to install things. Anyway since I have the impression that pclinuxos has a better default setup, I was considering it. Since the site mentions beta-version, I'm doubting and searching for some comments from users with have experience with it. So, if anyone wants to comment, feel free ... Thanks.

    gaim and yahoo

Heya, since you use yahoo you maybe can have a look at the program ayttm. It even has webcam-support for yahoo, using an extra patch. I didn't liek it as much as gaim, but I don't use yahoo either. But it's coming along really nice and the new design of the program ..which resulted in another pproject/progam than ayttm seems also nice(can't find the link really at the moment....) Maybe worth looking at: http://ayttm.sourceforge.net/
  7. have also an usb speedtouch modem. 9.1 installed the things automatically ..versions before it ..didn't to it completely if I remember correctly. If you need it again, you can find tyhe mgmt.o-file on the alcatel-site ..the drivers part. It's in the linux driver-package. You have set your correct ISP-values in the connection-wizard? Just to be sure of that ...:). I don't know if Mandrake's firewal section ahs improved. I did it "manually" with shorewall (MAndrake also uses shorewall I believe, but puts a nice fornt-end to it, but shorewall itself is much more powerfull). It's not really a good thing to have no firewall, although if your system is configured properly ..permissions, ... and all patched and nobody knows any securty vulnerabilities, your system ius safe withouth a firewall ..BUT BETTER HAVE ONE, it's like a first defense-perimeter. The next links points to my shorewall config-files ..if Mandrake's firewall-stuff doesn't work properly for you. The files are located in /etc/shorewall Normally, I block everything. I only admit what I would like to use. You can change what to allow in the rules-file. I've documented it a little bit, so people can change what they want ..and I know what everything means myself when I haven't looked at it for a while :). You have to edit certainly the ISP-thingy (the IP-address you got fropm your ISP) you'll see in the rules-file. The rest of teh rules-file you can change according to your needs. the link: http://lumumba.luc.ac.be/~michel/ The shorewall-files when you follow the link are: interfaces, policy, rules, shorewall.conf, zones
  8. I use Mandrake solely, but I plan to test others. I just want to do a few other things before I try others. I don't have any windows-only-apps ... I don't use windows... I have mohaa for windows, which if I wanted could pay under linuyx withg wine, but %I probably will buy games that run natively in linux from now on. Anyway, quite some games that also run natively under linux seem to come out... Now, I play some opensource/free games under linux. There are quite some actually and they're are not bad. Although I've never played UT :), ...I just want top say that the UT2004 retail-cd seem to have the linux-version on it...if you didn't know :D.

    DMI pool?

has this also .... reinstall lilo and see if that works. Use the mandrake-dvd. Instead of installing press F1 for more options. type rescue choose reinstall lilo and see if that works...
  10. I played the gae yesterday and it is quite nice ... I play under the name RedRock if someone is interested :).
  11. I use nvpart now and that solved it ..no lockups anymore ..for more than a month now and I use my computer a lot ..maybe ven more, I can't remember when I had a lockup :) really ... it's something with the via-motherboard I believe. It's almost certainly video-related(agp I think). Using nvpart did it for me. There is also a patch for the newest nvidia-driver for via-motherboards I believe ... So, I would suggest try not the latest driver, but the one before it ..4496 or so I think. And use nvpart (liek mentionned in a previous post in this topic). The change/adding mentionned above has to be done /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file in de "Device"-section. Mayeb not using a precompiled interface, but letting it decide when you install the driver can also help some EXTRA maybe (..use the expert-option for this).
  12. Don't know if there already is support for 802.11g in 9.2, maybe there is ... Anyway, you can find a list of supported 802.11g-cards here: http://www.prism54.org/supported_cards.php Does this helps?
  13. I don't know the specifics, but liek told linux keeps programs that you used rece, tly in ram or somethiung like that. So, when you start those programs again they will load faster since (a part of them/ ) tehy are already in memory. Maybe they do it some other way, but I suppose the purpose it that programs load faster. Ram memory is faster than loading from secondary storage like harddisk, .... You know that I suppose... As long as you don't use too much swap it is ok. It is indeed normal that your swap is fully used. Your ram may also be used ofcourse ..that's what it is there for, but if it is used really a lot, then you maybe could thinkg of adding mroe ram, but I use 128 MB ram (900Mhz cpu) and use Mandrake 9.1 and it runs fine with me.. Ofcourse we maybe have different needs, althoufgh I can run things like eclipse ((big) java IDE= written in java I mean with JAVA IDE), mozilla, music and gaim at the same time sometimes.... When switching virtual desktops I maybe have to wait for mozilla to redraw or saw when I use my computer heavily, but that happens quick enough. Depends on the apps and how heavy they are. couple of secs or so I think, but that is under quite heavy use..for me anyway. The linux 2.6.x kernel has improved memory usage quite some I thought, maybe trying out that if you want more responsiveness or maybez even the multimedia-kernel ..but am not sure about the stability of it yet. So, looking at ram, is not raellly an indication you need ore memory, it is more an indication when you have "too" mcuh, when linux doesn't use a lot of it :).
  14. Tell something about the state of the 3d-video drivers: nvidia, ATI, XGI: it seems xgi is going to support linux, but there is no data available about their performance on linux, opengl support, ... http://www.linuxhardware.org/search.pl?topic=10 http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?si...257&mode=thread Like mentionned tell something about the commercial games on linux. I believe ID ports all their games to linux, but not sure. about UT2004 retailbox and linux-support: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=170724 Say something about the free games like enemy territory, america's army, ... Mention some thing abou opensource games. there was a post abou this recently, but there is ofcourse more and happypenguin is a good start indeed. Here is the recent thread on this board: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=10718 Ofcourse it may be important telling something about the performance of the 3d-cards under linux also. Maybe use the new 2.6.x kernel for this? Maybe even the multi-media-version of it ....? But don't know anything about it's stability. Mentioning some links for people who might be interested like : http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/news/ and like others mentionned above. If you're allowed to ..adding the morphix Gamer ISO?? It's already nbice you may write about linux and gaming... http://morphix.sourceforge.net/modules/new..._id=119&forum=1 You can find it here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=170724 it also cobntains UT2003 demo(but there is also a UT2004 demo for linux I think) end quake3 I believe ... If you know how to add stuff, you can even add others if you would liek toofcourse. I don't know if you sell a cd with it, else you could mention the download location, but MENTION THAT IT RUNS FROM THE CD AND IT IS NORMALLY SLOWER THIS WAY instead of running it from yoru computer ... Ofcourse, it would be cool if it also contains the new linux kernel .... but maybe it isn't stable enough yet? For the rest ... maybe something about what is linux (couple of sentences or so: short anyway I suppose). Ok this last part was optional and since the ISO dates from half a year ago, it won't include the 2.6 kernel I suppose :). So, I have here: 3d-drivers, benchmark of 3d-drivers (preferably under new kernel I suppose, maybe not since it is not in the real distributions yet, but I think they are going to be from this year on, not? ) commercial games, free games, opensource games. What else? hmm the amount of ram used, ... :) if you do a benchmark ofcourse :). I don't know anything more at the moment, but will post if something comes up ...
  15. After you installed, open the mandrake control center. Can you find it .... uyou can always type mcc on the commandline if you don't find it in the menu or on the initial screen when you are logged in. Go to the siftware section, open "install software" or something like that. You'll now get a list of all possible sofwtare you cnaz install with explanation about it. You can also search for a certain application. It's best to do the normal install if it hangs and install whatever you would want to have after the install. You can also delete appliocations afterwards. I suppose your only application-sources will be the cd's as default. It's nice to use an ftp-server (on the internet) as an application source. This will offer you up-to-date applications and even mroe applications than on the cd's I think. Igf you have any question about this, just ask them. Hopes this helps.

    KnoppMyth

I found this while searching for info about pvr and what users like about them. I read posts about mythtv being hard to install. So, maybe this will help: http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html I am not sure about which mythtv-version it includes, but the forum seems to be active, so I suppose (not sure!!!) they are keeping it up-to-date as good as possible.
  17. There are some live-cd's you can eject while running I think, but don't know if MandrakeMove can do that. If you don't know ... a live-cd doesn't install itself or needs extra harddisk-space (any secondary storage). You just run it from your cdrom or whatever. You don't need anything else ... ok a monitor, ..will be handy,; but no harddisks or so are required. So, it can be you can't eject it while running.if this is what you mean ...
  18. I don't have ever set up anything like this, but I would think nfs is also better ..since like gowator mentionned samba is a layer on top of filesystems. If the machines you need to access the pc with can mount nfs, I suppose use nfs ...? But it is up to you surely sinc eI never did anything like this ... Of you can also access samba-shares through konqueror or nautilus if you use those .. install the samba/smb extension if you want it, if not already installed.

    Tasksel

If you want to see which packages are installed ....? (btw during install ..when you have to choose which software-groups you want ..you can click on advanced and see which packages it is going to install and check individual packages you want or uncheck those you don't want. ). Open the software-uninstall-section and use the sorted by group-view as mentionned above. Opening a group will show you the packages. on the right side you can info about the packages. You can do the same for the software-install-section to see the software-packages for each section you can install. Maybe you already knew this? Is this it? I don't know which packages it uses as default for the groups ..... sorry, can't really anwser that question.

    Tasksel

Go into the mandrake control center. Use the gui or type in a terminal mcc There is a software-wection .... then choose install software. You can choose the layout of tegh packages. Alphabetically, by group( what you want: games, desktops:gnome, kde, servers, ... ) You can aalso use the search-function . I'm supposing here you already added some software-sources. I think the cd's are mentionend automatically, but maybe you also would liek some internet-souces for more up to date stuff. I don't know if you have added sources (if you want) already ... hopes this helps you some.
  21. There are some extra pathces for the new 2.6.x kernel (don't know chiwh one exactly and if it is for multimedia-kernel): http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/2221 You could patch teh kernel and try them out :) .... This is maybe boring for you; don't know .... If you have a lan and if you have a server, are you pushing it too its limits...? You have vpn-possibilities, you can remotley access your media, documents, .... Try out some new software, you have not used yet ?? Maybe an encrypted filesystem??? (there is more than 1 way I read :)), enhance security? Look into filesystemattributes specific to one/more filesystems, .sync your time with a time server, .... Ofcourse it can be nice to have such a nice functioning system ... :D. Share the things you did with mandrake :).

    usb key

I wonder if this version of supermount gives less trouble then? http://supermount-ng.sourceforge.net/ Supermount mostly works great for me, althought it doesn't seem to like the usb-camera of my brother. Maybe my fault ... Once used to it mounting andf unmounting is not so difficult, but supermount is some easier .... if it works for you ofcourse :).
  23. O, if you woudl like to use directfb for graphics instead of x11 ... I would suggest buying an ATI-card. Why? http://www.directfb.org/projects.xml Directfb only seems to support ATI now and I doubt if thgey will supprot nvidia, because nvidia has binary-only drivers and there isn't an opensource version..so if you would like 3d accelleration .... ATI I suppose.
  24. There is goind to come a 2ghz version as the successor of teh via epia's, but I don't know how long this ill take. And if you have enough hardware support for some things, you can do enough with a 1 gig cpu, but that depends what you want, .... ofcourse I would like some flexibilty towards future needs if I would buikd someting like this. Especially if you want to encode to MPEG-4, ...
  25. About a shop. I once bought sonething here: http://shop.forcom.be/index.html Maybe you already know it. I'm not so pleased about their support or not sure I'm still leaving it open, but I bought the NEC 1300A with them and it seems ok. You can pay when they deliver it to your home or you can pick it up. Ooh, it's not that I really needed support. The NEC functions very well. Not problems. It was just that they also mentionned + NERO on their site and I didn't get it. I emailed them (yeah, I know I should have used the phone .... ) and didn't get a response. Anyway, sinceI work under linux this doesn't matter, but my brother uses windows. Anyway, I do all the burning for him, so it doesn't actually matter, but they at least could have responded. They removed it finally I saw. I didn't really buy it because of the + NERO. The price was also good without it, but still. It lowered my confidence in them. I'm giving them amother chance and consider this as a serious mistake(I think it can be seen as false advertising), but I won't like a bit if this happens again. I live in Limburg btw.
