  1. The biggest problem is IT managers who think they know what they're doing - I tried to get my firm to test Linux but they said they had to be MS compatible for Word, etc. Er....Open Office? People in these positions dont want to go out on a limb - but if you showed them a system running with the apps they need - well.................. Dutch
  2. Don't know if this will help you but I had the transparency proxy problem with my ISP. BTW I use Guarddog firewall. I trawled some websites and now do this as root....... iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 6881:6889 -j DNAT --to- (current address) With the 6881-6889 ports enabled in guarddog, my torrent is fine. Update - Mandrake 10.1 Powerpack installed and running well so the IC7 mobo is fine. Hyperthreading is impressive! :D Dutch

    Mobo advice

Thanks for the reply. I already have checked - its the 875P ICH5 RAID but as I said earlier, there are conflicting reports. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this hardware........ D

    Mobo advice

Hi folks I'd appreciate a bit of advice before I waste my money - I've searched various forums and get mixed reactions? I'm about to upgrade my self-build to a Pentium4 3Gig (Northwood) socket478 CPU on an Abit IC7 motherboard. (Although this board supports RAID, etc, I'll be using my IDE drives normally for the time being). Some threads say that the Abit IC7 isn't very Linux-friendly, but others say the only problem they found is the LAN. Can anyone tell me if the IC7 is supported, or am I going to have grief?! Thanks. K3b problem

Logged in as root after a reboot (Windo$e gets a habit) but it still will not accept the iso file. I've also tried with a basic text file from both root and user, but it locks them all - I cant burn a data DVD with files at all! Dutch

    K3b problem

Not enough space, unfortunately. Having changed the file permissions, I cant figure out why k3b is locking them. Dutch

    K3b problem

Hi I'm using k3b 0.11.14 on KDE 3.2. (Mdk 10.1 CE). I've got an ISO on my root partition, which I've burnt onto DVD using k3b. Before I try to install from the DVD, I want to save the 4Gig+ iso onto a DVD just in case! The problem is that I keep trying to burn a new DVD data project to save the iso but the iso folder contents have a padlock sign on the logo inside the project window. I've changed permissions for the folder and files but this is still the case. So far I've burned 2 coasters trying to save the iso as a file! What I can't understand is that I burnt the iso image onto a DVD successfully....?! Any thoughts would be appreciated! Dutch
  9. Glad to say that this works on 10.1 Community, too. Dutch

  11. Thought I'd just add here (with apologies to SpikeyKlitske if this is not the error he's getting too), but I've followed all the above and get the driver successfully built, but get the error message.......... Any ideas? Cheers
  12. Before you splash out on a router, > if < you get the Speedtouch modem free (you do with BTYahoo which I'm using), you may as well try to use that - and save some cash! This project Speedtouch has taken over from the speedtouchconf project and has got me connected using Mdk10 Official when everything else failed, rpms, scripts, everything. Follow the instructions exactly and download the microcode you need from the link on the website. Like I said, its worth a try! :D Any probs, post back.... D BTW - BTYahoo download restriction is 30 Gig a month!
  13. Many people have problems with this modem and I've tried various methods, but I've found that this website should provide you with a working connection: - http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ It has built on the 'speedtouchconf' project and provided you follow the installation guide to the letter, including the link to the Thomson driver location, you should be successful. Simple install and start/stop connection :D HTH and good luck! Dutch
  14. Thanks for your input - I think the Ethernet sounds like a good option, I'll be able to boot into either OS (Mdk/SuSe/XP) without messing about. Cheers! :D D
  15. Many thanks for your tips - now to price up some hardware..... :D Cheers D
  16. Hi all, I've read various threads talking about problems connecting to the Net using the Speedtouch USB modem in Linux, etc ....so the question I'd like to ask is - what is the best hardware to use for ADSL in Linux, if the speedtouch is so problematic?? For instance, what PCI cards/external hardware is recognised and works? I haven't got the knowledge (or to be honest, the time) to mess about too much trying to make it work! so is there anything out there that just works....? I can work inside my machine quite easily - its the software I have problems with! Many thanks D

    HiSax problem

Update......... I've had to go back to 2.4 kernel. On checking the rpm package details in Control Centre, there's no reference to Hisax drivers in the 2.6 kernel, but there is in the 2.4?! There's also some sensors drivers missing too, so I guess the 2.6 kernel shipped hasn't got all drivers....? D
  18. Just an update for everyone sending private messages............ Having checked system logs, used another chap-secrets and pap-secrets file, etc etc I think I've eliminated things down to the configuration files - isdn4k. For some reason authentication is broken. Reported as a bug - hopefully fixed (or explained) soon........ D
  19. I’ve installed Mandrake 10 Official and have configured the internet connection (ELSA ISDN PCI card) – the system worked fine with previous Mandrake versions but doesn’t now – even after applying the ISDN patch from the Mdk website. On 10, I can connect with my ISP (BTYahoo) but get redirected to a holding area because they cannot authenticate my login. All my details are correct but I noticed that I didn’t have any option to select CHAP protocol when originally setting up the connection. The weird thing is net_monitor says I’m not connected, but the graph shows I am, Gkrellm shows ippp0 active and I can get this ISP redirection message! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. Dutch

    HiSax problem

I've just installed Mdk10 Official and have an internet connection problem - can someone assist? I've got an ELSA PCI ISDN card (Quickstep 1000 in previous Mdk versions) and after configuring the internet connection (as well as applying the patch on the Mandrake Errata page) I still cannot connect. The system messages are: - May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: Starting ISDN for Linux... May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: Loading HiSax driver May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: CardID: HiSax May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: CardType: 7 May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: CardName: ELSA Quickstep 1000 May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: Parameters: id=HiSax type=7 protocol=2 irq=5 io=0x300 May 15 20:04:46 localhost isdn4linux: FATAL: Module hisax not found. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? It worked great under previous Mandrake's............... Thanks Dutch Moved from Hardware by spinynorman
  21. Install the Guarddog rpm, check three or four boxes and you get a stealth firewall. Nearly as easy to set up as tinyfirewall in Mdk 8.2 days...... Dutch
  22. One of the reasons for the delay in reading the rpm database is a slight bug with supermount. I found that by putting a CD in the tray before opening Install, etc, did the trick - even when I didn't want to look in the CD! Since updating with the latest urpmi/grpmi though, the delay has gone - at least on my system :) Dutch
  23. Stickers, etc. has already been suggested! ;-) When you can get hold of cheap CD's containing a Mandrake distro (or downloading one yourself) $60 isn't a lot, is it? Particularly bearing in mind how much we used to pay for Windo$e (and every other program we had to buy to use on it). The ideal world would be to not pay anything - but that won't help Mandrake to survive in the real world..... BTW - if you can't afford $60, a smaller donation to Mandrake would do..... Dutch
  24. Just a quick thought, but have you tried the /mnt/camera option in Konqueror? If your camera is supported by gphoto (which it presumably was in 8.2) - then it might work. This may cut down the likely culprits... HTH Dutch
  25. I also had to wait ages but got the apology email after I'd got my order! - a reply email from Mark said "it looks like our bugs have got bugs" which made me grin. But even so I genuinely believe that it would be a pity if some of the posters here rejected Mandrake. Other forums have mentioned the mess that MandrakeStore has made with the Mdk9 ordering - but it's just one department of Mandrake - unfortunately a very high profile one. I think that the team at the Store have had their a**es kicked by the new CEO - or will have  This mess with people's orders detracts from a good Mdk 9 distro, which is a pity. But our patience will pay off - I hope! Dutch
