  1. Several very similar threads here, but nothing helping . I had this setup working but now after upgrading to 2007 from PCLinuxOS on PC 2 I am in trouble. Here is my setup: PC1 running MDK2005, PC2 running 2007 PC1 was setup as 192.168.10.1, PC2 was setup as 192.168.10.2, PC3 192.168.10.3, etc. -> DSL modem <-> eth0 PC1 eth1 <-> hub <-> eth0 PC2,3,4 I have ssh loaded and running on PC1 , also named, network, dhcpd and squid. I also had sftp connections using ssh from PC1 to PC2 and vice versa (for file transfer). PC1 is set to share 'net connection. I have had MDK2005 and PCLinuxOS on PC2, but wanted to try out 2007. After fresh install of 2007 on PC2, I just check DHCP in ethernet connection wizard using MCC and am able to connect to net and then browse. Previously, however, I used static settings in MCC ethernet wizard and entered 192.168.10.2 for PC2, 255.255.255.0 netmask and for gateway I entered 192.168.10.1 which should be PC1 and I was able to connect to net and also via sftp from PC2 to PC1 (for file sharing) . I tried changing from DHCP to static settings on PC2 and now am unable to either connect to net or reach PC1 via ssh. Also, domain is not set valid but I can't find anyplace to alter it. I have ssh and network services running on PC2 but don't see named and the dhcpd service is loaded on PC2 but I can't make it start even tho it is checked to start at boot in MCC services. Are there any packages I'm missing? Any help appreciated. Thanks
  2. Just noticed when attempting to get a Lexar USB drive working on Vista that I entered administrative services and lo and behold I was presented with a window warning me that I was getting into administrative 'territory".....just like when entering MCC. MS is going to do WHATEVER it takes to pull backhanded swipes at GNU/ Linux, or as someone elase mentioned. 'damning with faint praise". I have no doubt they are going to ask Intel's help in order to futz with Palladium, now called safe computing as you say, or they are going to implement web based software, or adopt and absorb the linux kernel and claim it as their own. Sorry, you or I may know the difference but the average user is going to think MS invented UNIX and Linux. Oh....BTW, Vista needed drivers for the USB drive.
  3. As a new Linux user for about 2 years now I feel obliged to give a heads up to prospective new Linux users about the subversive tactics employed by a proprietary software giant we all know. This giant company is feeling the heat of large corporate users migrating to Linux and now with Dell offering opensource in its Desktop product line, this large proprietary software firm MUST rely on their long history of dispensing FUD about the opensource movement. Remember, this corporation is really a world class public relations master first and foremost, and what better way to disseminate FUD than to deliver carefully choreographed sideswipes at opensource disguised as "help"? By and large, most forums including this one have helped immensely in my migration from the Windows world to opensource and I am now completely reliant on GNU / Linux for my day to day business needs. However, there are a few Linux websites and forums out there that upon closer inspection, leave the distinct impression that they are dispensing FUD disguised as "help". For the new linux user here are some tips to help keep you aware about the true intentions of any random Linux forum: If the website in question is not directly associated with a specific distro - caution If the Windows vs Linux thread in a forum is constantly in play and the other threads relating to actual help haven't had a post in weeks - red flag If there are only a handful of repeat members who are "reviewing" distros AND their reviews "seem" to suggest that Linux has some nice features, but just isn't ready - red flag. Some of these reviews are very well written in that they don't outright bash Linux and they appear to be fair and balanced, but they always leave the reader with the impression that maybe the new user should wait until linux matures - red flag There are a number of domain registration databases. Find out who the owner or webmaster of the site is. Google this owner or webmaster and the name of the giant proprietary software company in the search text box with a "+" between them. You may be amazed at the red flag you come up with This does not necessarily include Linux forums with advertising by the proprietary software giant. Some of them have to rely on that revenue stream, but you have to question their motivations. This determination CANNOT be based on a few sporadic visits to the forum in question, or by any single one of the aforementioned red flags alone. But if, over time your gut tells you that the general tone is not beneficial to the opensource movement AND several of the above red flags are evident, consider removing them off your help list and warn others of your suspicions. Conversely, please be alert to forum threads and members who make unrealistic promises about migration to any OS, including GNU / Linux. There is a learning curve no matter how you slice it or dice it. Hope this helps a Linux newb
  4. I should be able to add a printer"configured on other machines" thru printerdrake, but when I progress, Am informed that there is no network connection so other printers can neither be detected nor configured.
  5. Googled, read WIKI, searched forums but no luck. 99% of threads related to printer sharing Linux to Windows . One or two threads about linux to linux printer sharing trail off into other topics. Running MDK 10.2 on two PCs with Brother DCP 7020 attached to one via USB . Am able to ping and connect thru ssh. Internet sharing also working. Tried sharing thru CUPS admin localhost:631 Tried sharing thru KDE printer admin. Tried MCC Samba. Says it is for linux and non-Linux systems but when I open wizard, questions all seem to be Windows related. Must be missing something simple. Any help appreciated. Thanks
  6. Before I start digging into xsane, curious to know if anyone has any experience with faxing under linux. I sent one fax once, but have been unable to duplicate. Using MDK 10.2 with xsane .97 and Brother DCP7020 multifunction. Scanner and xsane seem to be working fine. Modem is Intel 536ep internal PCI hdwr modem and works fine. Have setup xsanes faxing mode and all works, but when I hit send...nothing. In CL I use the fax send command and recieve error message that efax cannot read multistrip TIFF files. If I try to send PS files as per efax I recieve error message that serial port /dev/modem cannot be accessed or lock file is closed. My modem works fine with Kppp . Modem responds and i am able to connect and Browse. I do have a broadband connection that I use via LAN thru DSL modem, but would like to use the internal 536ep PCI modem for faxing. Apparently xsane or the Brother MF does not support line art, because in xsane setup tab it gives the option to compress TIFF files using G3 compression if using lineart mode which I think is what efax wants, but I do not have that option under mode in xsane . Have tried setting up efax-gtk same result. Hylafax and mgetty seem like way overkill for a single user fax setup. Any help Thanks
  7. Using actiontec external serial hdwr modem. This setup works on this PC in Mepis, MDK 10 and 10.2, and Slack. I'm getting 5.9 kb/s which is hauling ass for dialup. I am on the end of a very long POTS line so this is GOOD! Now in MDV 2007 one, I tried the MCC modem POTS connection, but no go. Applet reports ppp0 connects then immediately disconnects. Mozilla and Konq report "no server". On a hunch, opened Kppp from CL since it isn't in the menu. Sure enough the MCC wizard doesn't auto detect or load the default modem commands including the init string, so had to manually type in all the commands. In addition to the specific requests for account and modem parameters, I have been able to check " automatic" for the DHCP and DNS questions and this has always has worked. NOW, I am able to connect, but both browsers report waiting for "whatever site" but never connect as if there is a name resolution problem. I noticed when I used the MCC wizard, they now have kppp auto launched upon opening Moz browser, but now that I have connected using kppp, I think some script is trying to launch kppp when it is already open. Well, I'm afraid to ask. Mind you, I figured this all out a year ago and had it working in MDK 10.0 and 10.2. What or why did they change this? I have the opportunity to promote MDV to a few people who do not have access to DSL, but this is not a good start. Any ideas? Thanks
  8. That's the problem with new ideas....marketing types get hold of them and "convince" people that they need this or that. Server-Client based OSs / apps are a hot topic now, but if I owned a small business I would NEVER allow someone else to run my OS / apps and / or "keep" my files on a remote server. No way No how! If the OS or server provider decides to "change" your configuration, options or access or insists that you "owe them" money (for whatever reason), well, they've got your OS, apps and files ......what are you going to do to them from 1200 miles away. Think about the last time you had a disagreement with Ma Bell over the phone bill. Who won? You get the idea. Large corporations are a different story. The likely hood that a big server farm or OS provider would "screw over" someone like Ford or Exxon or Citibank is pretty slim. I can't think of any good technical reasons why I would let my OS, apps, and / or files run on someone elses server. I can think of TONS of financial motivations for pushing this idea. You might consider buying up a few spare hard drives and stocking up on some good distros on cd for a rainy day. Sorry, I'm old fashioned that way........
  9. Sorry, read the readme and release notes but must have missed that part....apparently any of the 8 .kde versions has english on it. Thanks
  10. Usually use the free editions without the proprietary stuff, but would like to tryu 2007 "ONE"(with KDE) There seem to be about 7 or 8 i586 kde iso downloads. Sorry about the duh question but surely there aren't that many CD's. Can I live without some of them? Thanks
  11. You don't make a financial commitment with your competition in a free market enterprise system unless there's something in it for you. That's economics 101. Oh... that's right, this is MS we're talking about. I'd like to be wrong, but the MS spin machine and legal dept. are legendary for manipulating and massaging the patent office, the D. O. J. and many of the world's PC users for the past 15 years. I wonder what special powers Novell thinks it has that will keep them from winding up as a brown smear in the MS underpants. This is also military tactics 101 - hold your friends close and your enemies closer.. Even if MS DOESN'T sue Novell or any other linux enterprise, they have the unethical and financial wherewithal to gut any serious market (enterprise) venture of GNU/linux vis a vis perception. All it takes is one well placed "threat" of suit or a manufactured publicity campaign and it's back to square one for opensource. They CAN'T crush opensource, but they can clamp a really , REALLY, REALLY BIG ball and chain on it. Now.....while they're doing all of this in the good ole U S of A, why not take a little trip overseas for some fun and profit and cloak yourself in the new hitech "value added" Linux from MS/Novell? The emerging software market in India and China are going to make someone vomit fountains of cash. That someone probably could not go into these countries wearing the mask of MS, but if they were wearing an OpenSuse mask, well... that would be different. A paltry 3 million dollars could buy a foreign ad campain portraying MS as the repentant bad boy, who has seen the light in opensource and is going to be the third world's technology saviour for the 21st century. In a related story, I wonder if plunking down a bunch of "free" hospitals and schools will help the Indians ,Chinese, and Russians decide which software to buy? cynical I know ... but it's a great sounding story. ;)

    kfloppy broken

Well, ordinarily I wouldn't worry about it but sometimes kids need an assignment taken to school. I don't mind losing a floppy. Can't afford to lose a pendrive tho' and burning a cd for a 20kb file seems a waste.

    kfloppy broken

Running MDK 10.2 on 2 different PCs. Don't have much use for floppy drive anymore, but occasionally need it. Poked around a bit and found very little on kfloppy except a couple of bug reports on broken kfloppy formatting. Looked for updates, but no dice. What's up with floppy drives? Read somewhere about problems with udev. Fstab is OK and drive works, but is inconsistent on both PCs and sometimes reads drives, sometimes not. Files are listed with random fonts and broken characters, etc. Kfloppy missing man command page and will not format. Sometimes have to format in Windows. Any help appreciated
  14. 10.2 updates have been moved to the old tree. Found two solutions: 1. Mandriva site has not been updated as to NEW location for updates! EasyURPMI webpage has been updated properly. 2. I had found the old 10.2 update tree before retrying Easy URPMI but when trying to add the URL manually in MCC I did not realize that the media_info folder was buried down in there with all the update packages, so when it updated "properly" it appeared the media list was added properly but in fact was not. Here's how I did it in MCC: open MCC > click "select from where packages ..." > click add custom > click HTTP server radio button > Name > updates URL > http://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/Mandrakel....2/main_updates tick relative path > media_info hdlist.cz click OK > DONE! Hope this helps
  15. Have two separate MDK 10.2 PCs that I am unable to update. I have successfully setup main, contrib, plf repositories using easyurpmi but upon trying update thru MCC software manager I receive this error: Unable to add medium ..retrieve failed curl failed exit w/9 or0 . Cannot retrieve list of new packages from update_source. Either the media is misconfigured or unreacheable.....etc. I have tried several mirrors. I have tried on both PCs and have tried with wget. Have also tried thru console. Also tried with removemedia -a to reset. Has Mandrake stopped supporting updates for MDK 10.2, or have they been moved? Thanks for any help

    libtiff.so.4

Receive this error when trying to install maxview on MDK 10.2. This is a document scanning and handling program ala paperport. ./maxview: error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have found libtiff.so.3 in /usr/lib. It is suggested to link libtiff.so.4 to libtiff.so.3 but it did not work. Can't seem to find anything about libtiff4 requirements on the libtiff site. any help appreciated

    login error

error for 2 out of 4 users. kids messing with PC "error setting up inter-process communications for kde" "could not read network connections list /home/user1/.DCOPserver_name.mylan_0" "check dcopserver is running" googled DCOP. have tried to remove and /or reset .kde files and .DCOP server file to no avail. Noticed that the ownership of the /tmp/gconfd-user1 and user 2 somehow got reversed (how?), so I reset that but no luck. Have tried resetting permissions and ownership of these files but no luckL: /.dcopserver /.kde/socket-hostname .kde/tmp-hostname /tmp-kde-user /.kde/socket-hostname /tmp/ksocket-user Am trying to see why 2 users CAN login while other 2 cannot, but that's a lot of comparing. must be missing something simple. Any ideas? Thanks
  18. Issued urpmi --noclean --auto-select and unfortunately updates have already been installed as per console output. Is there a way to access the updates again or any other way to save them to CD? Thanks
  19. I have to agree about trying influencing manufacturers. These companies are PROFIT oriented and cannot function within your request if there' is no money to be made. Vote with your dollars. Example.....for printing.. go with Samsung. Many of their products have linux drivers ON THE CD ! Epson, HP, and now Brother are providing linux drivers on their sites. Lexmark lasers also are linux compatible although their inkjets are horrible....ANYWAY..back to my rant.. One of the first major stumbling blocks facing new PROSPECTIVE linux users is getting net connected. One great way to spread linux knowledge is via internet, and since many still use dialup, I have written to and received favorable replies from several developers of MAJOR distros. 1. Linux community should look for philanthropic capital, pool assetts, whatever.......... buy overstock lots of serial port modems...GIVE them away on forums and linux friendly reseller sites. 2. STOP WAITING for modem drivers. Linmodems has done a wonderful job, but let's face it...modem setup is still a hit or miss affair for most users. Why not bypass ALL THAT and form a linux diistro "consortium" and CONTRACT for someone to build cheap internal PCI modems with linux compatible chipsets or buy overstock lots. I have seen 100,000 for $1.99 each. Write drivers. Incorporate them into the next kernel release, then GIVE THE DAMN MODEMS AWAY! Make another batch of 250,000. GIVE THOSE AWAY! Make another batch of 500,000....sell them at cost. OK done ranting... I feel better now Thanks
  20. Thanks, will try this weekend.
  21. OK, command works if I issue "urpmi --noclean <package>.rpm" 1. Since the packages do not go to /var/cache/urpmi/rpms UNTIL I hit the urpmi command, I don't know which package I am downloading unless I am looking at the list via the MCC GUI. Is this the only way or is the list available in the console. I poked around and found some lists in var/lib/urpmi/names.main. They seem to match what is listed in the MCC GUI list of main repositories(or whichever update source i choose) but not quite exactly. 2. I was only able to dwnload and then save one or a clump of .rpms (if there were dependencies) at a time. How can I select the whole list (about 50 to 60 packages) and then issue the --noclean variable recursively from within the console? Am trying to save all these update, security and bugfix .rpms for repeat installation on several more PCs. Thanks for your help
  22. Would like to know if and where MDK10.2 updates and bugfixes, etc. are stored in cache prior to installation when using the update repositories in the MCC software management. If so, it seems these packages(which seem to be about 500mb) can then be burned to cd and used for future installations without going thru the ftp shuffle. Is there a better way? Thanks in advance [moved to software by tyme]
  23. Trying to migrate more stuff to MDK. Here's setup hda -Wxp NTFS with a FAT partition hdb- MDK 10.2 During install, loaded LILO on MBR of hda Now would like to physically remove hdb to install a clean larger HD to again install MDK10.2. Removed hdb, Changed BIOS to reflect thsi, then booted with just the hda Wxp HD in place. Last message is - locating boot record IDE 0...OK Then a bunch of 01 01 01 01 01........ Would like to boot into Wxp on hda Obviously LILO is looking for MDK (which was on hdb) but shouldn't it also see Wxp? Do I need to repair Wxp MBR temporarily till I get my bigger HD? Thanks in advance
  24. Been a while, but I was able to get 536EP to install on 10.0 and 10.2 but have not tried 2006. Don't know about 2006, but Mandrake does not come with kernel sources installed and they need to be. try - "urpmi kernel-source" Also previous post is correct. You need to have the exact drivers for the exact modem for the exact kernel/distro version. I believe gcc package needs to be installed. Kudos to your project. May I suggest that even if you get this modem going, an external serial port (not USB) hdwr modem may generally be a better choice because: 1. NO DRIVERS REQUIRED 2. They are generally FASTER than the 536EPs that I've installed 3.They can be had for $5 or less at many thrift shops. good luck
