  1. PC1 - MDK 10.2 main PC PC2 - MDV2008 Connecting both PCs using ssh (usually via Konqueror) .Would like to sync several directories with nested folders between both PCs. PC1 is my main PC with original files. I have copied these directories (with nested folders) onto PC2 and will be scanning docs into PC2. Then I would like to use some syncing to keep PC1 updated. Does anyone know if Konqueror is using rsync? When copying directories with identical files from one folder to another, Konq will ask to autoskip copying if identical files exist in both directories. I am assuming this is some form of syncing. **IMPORTANT** I do NOT want to update/sync the CONTENT of the files themselves, I just want to sync folders with NEW files in them. If Konqueror is already doing this, then I am good to go. I tried to google about Konq, but no info. I have heard of krusader and also Unison. Any experience with these? Would like to use something with a GUI. Any help appreciated.
  2. Well, I guess this has turned into somewhat of a file sharing issue now. I will try to access these selected folders from a newly created user's Desktop.
  3. OK what I've decided to do is just copy only those folders needing updates from PC1 to PC2. This will solve a couple problems. 1. It will give me a copy of important data, so that office help won't have direct access to the original files and can't delete or alter them. 2. They won't have access to PC1 period. (this is my main PC) Within those folders however on PC2, there are still one or two subfolders I want to protect, so now what is the best way to "lock" a particular folder that is nested in one of these main folders? Should I consider encryption and if so how does one go about it. I looked into bcrypt but I don't think it does folders. So now we're talking about only working on PC2. If I create a new user, what's the best way to share and then limit access to specific folders on another users desktop without dissecting the main folders into little pieces? Will "sharing" under properties solve this in Konqueror? Thank you for any help
  4. PC1 Mandrake 10.2 @ 192.168.10.1 PC2 Mandriva2008 @ 192.168.10.2 Connected on local LAN via ssh. I access files between the two PCs by invoking sftp://<address> from within Konqueror. I would like to allow office staff to use PC2/scanner combo to update one or two specific folders inside the home folder on PC1. I do not want them to have access to other folders within my home folder. I tried setting permissions on all the folders I want protected, but when I ssh in to PC1 from PC2, I am able to access all home folders on PC1....BAD! Any ideas on the best way to do this? Should I copy the one or two folders I want updated from PC1 to PC2 and then let them live on PC2 and be updated from there in which case I could then copy the folders back from PC2 to PC1, but then I would not know to what extent each file or folder within these directories had been updated. I suppose that when I copy these folders back to the original, Konq will alert me that some of the original folders and files already exist and I can choose to either overwrite all or autoskip files that are original, but this seems kind of sloppy and makes me nervous. Or should I leave these folders on PC1 and attempt to scan (using xsane) to to PC1 from PC2 . I don't even know if xsane will do this, but I can try. ( there are about 6-10 folders within each of these two main directories I want worked on, and they are nested about 4-6 folders deep within each of those.) Any suggestions on how to do this neatly without having scanned docs spread out on two PCs would be welcome. My main goal however is to limit access to only certain folders. If I copy those working folders to PC2, then my permissions issues are moot, but would still like to know how to do it. Thanks
  5. How, it's a dual-boot? I guess I could give each installation a different IP address even though it's one PC with one NIC?
  6. OK, I think it was the firewall setting (I checked the everything tick-box). I'm getting closer now b/c beforehand nothing would happen. Now I'm getting the "the host fingerprint has changed" message. Problem is I entered this into known_hosts on PC1 but still no go. THere is already a fingerprint assigned to 192.168.10.2 from the PCLOS2007 installation. How can I either load two different fingerprints into the known_hosts file, or copy the fingerprint from the PCLOS install to the MDV install or otherwise trick the known_host file on PC1 to see both installations the same since they are using the same IP address and NIC card? I found the /etc/ssh file loaded with xxx_key files on the PCLOS PC2 but they are all gibberish encryptions and not in the xx:xx:xx:xx: format. If I could copy this to the MDV2008 /etc/ssh, then I assume PC2 would send the same fingerprint to PC1 no matter which OS I was booted into on PC2. Am I close? Thanks
  7. internet<->DSL modem <-> eth0 (PC1 MDK10.2)eth1 <-> hub <-> eth0 (PC2 MDV2008/PCLOS2007), eth0(PC3 Sidux) PC1 eth1 setup static 192.168.10.1 (gateway) PC2 eth0 setup static 192.168.10.2 PC3 eth0 setup static 192.168.10.3 All internet sharing is fine. When booted into PCLOS on PC2 I can connect between PC1 and PC2 via sftp, so I believe NIC, hub and cable are fine. I can connect between PC1 and PC3 via sftp When booted into MDV2008 I can connect to PC1 FROM PC2 but not other way around. Error is "could not connect to host 192.168.10.2" Any ideas? Thanks
  8. Sorry about the delay. My modem is the seimens speedstream 4100 and I don't think it is a router. 1. First off, is this a normal peer to peer setup? 2. Someone suggested that a switch in place of the hub would be better, but that a router is overkill? 3. Same person also suggested that the hub/router/switch should be between the DSL modem and ALL of the PCs. This will distribute internet sharing with no loss in speed. Is this correct? However, won't I have to configure web filtering on ALL the PCs as opposed to just PC1? 4. I have squid running on PC1, and have setup internet sharing on it. PC2 and PC3 are able to 'net connect. Would PC1 be technically called the web server for 2 and 3? 5. I assume I would run DansGuardian on PC1 to protect 2 and 3? 6. I access the modem through a browser at 192.168.0.1 - All three PCs have been setup through MCC or PCC using Automatic DHCP and PC1 has internet sharing setup through MCC. What is the DNS server for PC1? What is the DNS for PC2 and PC3? 7. I noticed that dhcpd is available in MCC system services on PC1 (MDK 10.2) but cannot find it in the system services of the Control centers of either PCLOS2007 or MDV2008. What is going on? I have more questions coming up concerning static IP addresses on the local LAN. Any help appreciated.
  9. Wow, must need glasses. I think I must have just configured updates only. This was why I couldn't find it . Xsane seems to be installed now....thanks.
  10. Can't seem to find xsane for 2008?
  11. Am considering upgrading to MDV2008 although am very comfortable with 10.2 for the past year or so. I have a fresh MDV2008 / PCLOS2007 dual boot install on PC2 for testing purposes. All my main work is done on PC1. This is my setup: internet<->DSL modem <-> eth0 (PC1 MDK10.2)eth1 <-> hub <-> eth0 (PC2 MDV2008/PCLOS2007) As to why I set it up this way? 1. All I had was a hub 2. I figured i could use PC1 as a web server/filter to keep PC2 kid safe 3. I could share files on local network Although I have had most everything that I want working, I have read most every networking "bible" but can't seem to put it into context for my specific setup, and am kinda p*ssed (at myself) that I'm not really understanding what's going on. The reason is that I have setup internet sharing and static IPs for the local LAN, but I get inconsistent results so obviously I must be just stumbling around and I don't want to do that anymore. I do have a few (well more than a few) questions. Any takers? Thanks
  12. Great initiative on the part of Earthlink.
  13. It's just handy and I will only be loading text and some scanned .tiff or .jpeg on this drive, but if I run a cross a good deal I will pickup a 160 or 250bg HD. Thanks
  14. MDK 10.2 on Intel D815EEA mainboard has been fine for my business work for the past two years, but have outgrown my HD. Any thoughts on MDV 2007? 2008? If it aint' broke don't fix it? ( I am very comfortable with 10.2) Even if I reinstall 10.2 onto a bigger HD, would like some thoughts on partitions. I will keep large audio and/or video files on the family PC so my business PC will mainly see text and PDF files, scanned docs, etc. Current setup is 40 gb with XP (hda1- 10gb), FAT share(hda2- 15gb), and MDK10.2 in a /,swap,/home configuration. (hda5,6,7- 15gb) Will be losing the XP install as I haven't booted into it for over a year now. Was considering 2 HDs, one 80gb main and a second 40gb for backup of important data How does this look? 80 gb - /,swap, /home,/var, a spare partition for tinkering with second distro 40gb - one or two (ext3) partitions , swap (?) In the past I have just burned important stuff to CD as backup, but recently tried using MCC backup and it swelled /var quite a bit so need to put it someplace large and easily accessible. 1. Will MDV backup accept /var on a separate drive? 2. Can or should I put /var on the second drive? 3. Is there a way to leave /var on the main drive and have backups automatically copied to the spare? 4. Have heard about swaps on both drives helping speed.... I don't think I need swap on the 40gb, do I? If so, where's the best place to put them in the partitioning scheme? 5. Suggestions for other configs? Where , physically on the disk is the best place for these partitions? 6. Thoughts on filesystems? (ext3 or reiser) Am I missing anything? Any input appreciated.
  15. Making progress but still no sound. MDV 2005LE on Dell XPS R450. I believe several older Dell models use this card. Any way....receive informational error about sound server not being found during install and boot....so: used alsaconf: output is that chip detected is cs4232 but driver snd-cs46xx is recommended. no mixer shown in Kmix and speaker icon has red with white cross. No module? Tried loading snd-cs46xx and snd-cs4232 as per alsaconf...again - no luck. Looked in sound folder and found several other modules. Google shows this may respond to snd-cs4236. modprobed...output is "module not found" although I see it in the sound folder. (lib/mod/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x) Decided to add snd-cs4236 to /etc/modules....viola! speaker icon now has mute line thru it and kmix shows a mixer. I believe this means module has loaded. /etc/modules also has info about snd-46xx being loaded and unloaded several times. Opened mixer, unmuted, turned on switches, faders up...still no luck..restarted sound system, rebooted...no luck user added to sound ,cdrom, audio in etc/group KDE sound system is set to autodetect. ALSA in MCC services is running. Unable to post lspci (if this is ISA card will it show up?) or lsmod at the moment as I am fixing this over the phone. I have heard something about blacklisting modules but am unfamiliar with where it is done. Also, since I tinkered so much with the other modules could I have jammed too much into a file? How to remove the cs46xx module? Any help appreciated.
  16. Mandriva was obviously a concern for MS. Hopefully the MDV team will learn from this experience and incorporate that into the next sales pitch to future clients. Directly addressing MS, especially in this manner did not help their cause. Well........back to the drawing board.
  17. Although I winced through the letter, had it been professionally written, it would not change the fact that MS has taken the honorable free market enterprise system and p*ssed all over it. MS, and those minions who genuflect in the presence of this kind of behavior, are the kind of people who give capitalism a bad name. When I ran my business it would have been inconceivable to me to lurk around another vendor's business waiting to step in after the fact and lure a customer into reneging, even if only on certain parts of the deal. The fact that the agreement to purchase the hdwr may be honored does not absolve either MS nor the Nigerians in denying Mandriva the not inconsiderable market exposure they would have received. Anyhoo....some have accused MS of bribery, but leaving those charges alone for the moment, the mere shame of skulking around a competitors' deal, waiting to snatch up sloppy seconds, is a dishonorable practice that is certainly lost on MS. Have not the Nigerians ever heard of MS? Have they not been in contact with MS sales over the past 15 years? Has MS not had the chance , in 15 years, to convince the Nigerians that their product is better? In my 20 years of running into business deals ......this smacks of underhanded behavior. Equally to blame, are the persons in the Nigerian government responsible for this deal who apparently have a personal value system that is devoid of any standards. Note to Mandriva......you have a loyal following in many desktop users. Be cautious of any future prospective clients that MS has ready access to.
  18. You are learning a new "language". There WILL be pain. Accept the learning curve. Once that is done, the pain will lessen. Take for example...in MDK 10.2 K3b is listed under "archiving" because technically speaking, that is what you are doing to "save" your audio or data files. 1. Post a question to this and other forums. Configure your mind (as well as your schedule) to accept a reasonable wait for a response. That way, when a response takes less time, you are pleasantly surprised. (just a litlte reverse psychology here)....remember these are all people volunteering their time. 2. If you can't wait....learn the art of Google. One word or even the omission of a word can mean the difference between success and frustration. 3. Probably the hardest thing to overcome is your correct observation that if you don't know that you're supposed to ask a certain question....how can you ask? 4. Avoid the temptation to distro-hop as this will only prolong the learning curve. Mandriva is not one of the new "hot" distros, but I have been using it for business for over two years now. I have tinkered with Slack, Fedora, *buntu,CentOS,Xandros,PCLinuxOS, Vector,Kanotix,Puppy,SAM, DSL, and while each of them may have a nice feature in this area or that, overall, I think MDV has the best of all worlds in terms of usability, packaging, available apps, the very user friendly MCC (which gives a GUI to many administrative tasks that LOTS of other distros don't have), a decent balance between cutting edge and conservative stability, and last but not least, an attentive user base that is large enough to provide timely answers but not too overcrowded with the chaos found in some other forums. 5. Have fun! Hope this helps
  19. Using MDK 10.2. Did a drakbackup of user files yesterday and let it run while I browsed. Upon shutting down for the day and restarting next morning, MDK booted into CL mode indicating an X server error. Fortunately I happened to glance at the boot screen when there was a notice that hda5 was full. (hda1 Wxp, hda2 FAT). Only thing to cause this was the backup. Used a knoppix disk to hunt around for a bloated file and found it in var/lib/drackbackup/<user>.gz file. Booted back into MDK CL, deleted the backup file (about 3 gb) , regained disk space and X is back to normal. Several questions: 1. Booted knoppix, mounted the MDK partition, changed permissions of the hda5 to delete or move the file but could not. Report was that file was read only. Why could I not have access? (new to knoppix) 2. Why would drakbackup allow itself to continue if it was going to use up enough disk space to crash a boot into GUI? 3. Is this a bug? 4. How do I determine BEFORE backup if there is sufficient space? 5. On reading the posts here there are similar problems. Does this happen EVEN IF there is sufficient space? I saw the suggestion for mondo <whatever> backups. Are there any other utilities if drakbackup is no good? Thanks for any help
  20. I have moved PC/UPS/printer into a very small room with no ventilation .....hadn't thought of that...thanks!
  21. Using MDK 10.2 with Firefox 2.0 and APC UPS battery backup. Installed pbeagent from APC about one week ago and am now experiencing UNWANTED autoshutdowns. UPS seems to be working properly otherwise with a 60 sec. delay on loss of power to initiation of shutdown. Here is a snippet from /var/log/messages: etc.............. The UPS operates thru port 3052 and 192.168.0.1 is how I access my DSL modem in a browser. The IPaddress of the PC is 192.168.10.1 According to some research this is not an attack but something to do with DHCP, but want to make sure! Also, power log indicates a power failure at 22:10 which coincides with the /var/log messages but I was in another part of the house and there was no power failure that I noticed. This has now happened twice in about 4 days. Any help appreciated Thanks
  22. Sorry forgot to mention that I had done the "add a new profile". aioshin nailed it. I thought resetting defaults in about:config, new profile, clearing cache, deleteing prefs.js, reinstalling mozilla would take care of this but I guess there is something in the .mozilla settings folder that got altered / corrupted and affects the css displaying of webpages. I renamed .mozilla and rebooted and voila! all is well. I will compare the two folders time permitting and try to post the offending file. Thanks guys!
  23. Using MDK 10.2 and FF 1.0.2. for browsing. Outdated, I know but this combo has been working fine for two years. Anyhoo... About two weeks ago Yahoo main page OK, but mail page and random other pages only displaying animated scripts and plain text (large font, kind of like a Bookman font). Formatting is strange. No "table" formatting or background color, borders, .gif bullets, etc. I still have acces to the mail content, but this is visually annoying and hard to read. As an aside, Konqueror and Kuikshow displaying some of my offline .jpg upside down. add a - no luck to the end of each of the following lines: I have gone thru Yahoo options to reset to default went thru about:config resetting defaults removed mozilla prefs.js which should reset default settings Checked pages in Konqueror - formatting is correct which points back to FF uninstalled and reinstalled FF  reset all defaults in KDE configuration via GUI menu items At this point I created new user, opened mailpage with FF and voila - all is OK, which points to a kde setting Tried to copy new user .kde to affected user went back to affected user - deleted .kde which should build a default .kde setting - this fixed the upside down .jpg and I thought maybe it was affecting CSS but no luck. Can't understand why new user FF is displaying these pages OK, but when I delete the .kde file in the affected user there's no solution. What other settings could be affecting this? I did set up evolution and kmail about the time this all started. Could kmail or evo be doing something to the way these pages are displayed.?.......but then set it up on a PCLOS machine which has no problems viewing these pages. I don't see how as a few other random yahoo pages are also displaying strange. Maybe something with css formatting? Any help appreciated. Thanks
  24. Back to PCLOS on PC2 and still MDK2005LE on PC1. Well, I looked at /etc/hosts, hosts.allow/deny on th PC 1 and nothing about PC2 is there. However, on PC1 in /home/user/.ssh/hosts_allow there is reference to PC2 and a fingerprint. This all happened after I removed the network interface eth0 on PC2 and then configured a new LAN connection in PCC as static which I know I had done before. I went to PCC -> manage host definitions (which I never had done before and listed PC hostname as user2.mylan, then in setting up the new LAN connection, entered it as the host name. I am able to ping and connect via .ssh from PC1 to PC2 after entering a fingerprint on PC1. I think all is ok. keeping fingers crossed. I have all the network guides, rute guide, lnag. Can someone please explain NOT the definitions of DNS, hostname, and DHCP (which I have ad nauseum) , but when and WHERE they are used as regards my particular setup. Thanks
  25. update....am able to connect via ssh ( sftp://192.168.10.1 in Konqueror) from PC2 to PC1 but not from PC1 to PC2. At this point PC2 is setup thru PCC using dhcp. Usually when I have loaded a new distro onto pC2 I am notified of the hosts file needs a new fingerprint. If I setup the LAN connection on PC2 using static, nothing works including abiility to 'net connect. At least with dhcp in wizard i have the 'net. I will try to muddy thru the hosts files. Thanks
