  1. Okay, I can stop the server. However, if I try to play a wav file, the cpu usage still goes to 100%. If I try to start the sound server using OSS, there is no problem. However, if I try to start it using ALSA, I tend to get an error. Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting I followed the link listed above and made sure that the correct module was being loaded. That has not solved a thing. I am coming to the conclusion that whatever the program is that actually plays wav and ogg files must be dead.
  2. Dumb question -- how? I tried man artsd and couldn't find an entry
  3. This is the deal. I have a windows machine (win2k) and I have a linux machine (Mandrake 9.1). Each machine has a partition on it that is meant for backup. (Or will be used for backup) What I am looking for is a way to backup the user files form my windows machine onto my linux machine and the user files from my linux machine onto my windows machine. (Follow that) And here are my requirements: 1. The backup should be some form of compressed archive 2. The script/program/app/whatever should be scheduleable 3. The script/program should only replace - not add to - the files that are changed past the first backup 4. Should be preferably open source
  4. Well, I installed sndconfig and and according to it found out the name of my sound card and also found out that according to sndconfig, my sound card is not supported. That may explain the problems -- although, not sure how XMMS is using the sound card then though. Anyway, here is the info on the sound card. Silicon Integrated Systems [siS] SiS7012 PCI Audio Accelerator Anyone know how to get it working?
  5. Hmm... The only reason that I switched was that I was getting blank emails in Mozilla Mail. Apparantly it was caused by either mis formed mime headers or by funky characters in the mail body. Either way, it would kill Mozilla Mail till I restarted the program. However, I really like Thunderbird. Some reasons: 1. Spell check. (I realize that you can get this on Linux, but it is not available on windows) 2. single app that if it crashed does not take my browser with it 3. seems to be faster than Mozilla Mail when dealing with IMAP accounts 4. slightly easier to setup mail accounts (at least I found this) That is my list so far. The more I use the program, the more that list will grow I am sure.
  6. Hello, I have recently switched to using Thunderbird for all my email on my Mandrake computer. However, I am having one problem. Whenever I click on a link in an email, nothing happens. I would like to be able to click on a link and have Mozilla open up and show me the link. Is this possible? Using Thunderbird 0.3 RC2
  7. I am trying the second option to see what will happen. I couldn't find sndconfig to run. I tried several different variants of the command as well. (Am I missing something here?)
  8. Okay, did that and got an interesting error that hopefully someone can translate for me. I also tried sound in Gnome and no go there either. (however, I did not restart X or reboot before trying gnome. I don't know if that makes a difference though) So... How long before 9.2 is released?
  9. Yes, sound is set to start at boot. And according to the little messages that get displayed on the screen, ALSA starts with no problems. Now this is a problem. The 'test sound' button is greyed out. How do I overwrite or reconfig my config files? Yep, just did this and no difference. I rebooted and KDE got stuck trying to play the intro/boot wav file -- cpu went to 100% and nothing else would play until I killed the process. The very strange thing is that XMMS will play mp3 files and mplayer will also play mpga files without a problem. However, XMMS is set to use OSS and ALSO, so that may make a difference.
  10. Doesn't the Dell c600 already come with built in wireless -- considering it is one of their centrino lines of notebooks? Anyway, the best thing to do is to try to install Mandrake with the wireless card inserted. This gives you the best hope of having it recognize the card and install the correct drivers for it. Another thing, when looking for drivers, a lot of time it is not the make of card that you need to search for but the make of the chip set that you need to search on. Don't worry about the difference between when the boot process tries to bring up eth0 and when it starts pcmcia. I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 and it does the same thing. I can connect to the internet through my wireless without any problems. That probably does not help much, but here's hoping.
  11. Not really. Getting keyboard input from the command line in Java is a rather clumsy thing and setting up stream readers is really the only way of doing it. However, once you start doing GUI programming, things become a lot easier. If you want a link detailing the different ways of doing I/O in java check this out: http://www.fuzzylizard.com/articles/java-io.cfm
  12. Question: Is either of the machines running a firewall of *ANY* kind? If so, remove it.
  13. Why? if you don't plan on using it then why install it? Practice? The only way I have ever heard of installing IE is by using CrossOver office and even there it is buggy.
  14. I am having a strange sound problem when ever I go to play wave files. Basically, the processor usage goes to 100% and stays there until I kill the wave file. This all started when I upgraded to kde 3.1.3 using texstar's rpms. It is most noticeable whenever I login. The login process does not play the normal sound, instead the cpu usage goes to 100% according to gkrellm and I have to manually go in a kill the sound. However, the computer will play mp3 files using xmms with no problems. Along with this, if I try to test any of the sound notifiations inside Kopete -- which are all .ogg files -- I get this horrible garbled distorted output that sounds just terrible. Any ideas as to what might be going wrong here? Details: Mandrake 9.1 KDE 3.1.3-4 texstar Mobo: ECS something with integrated sound I also can not launch the arts control tool without getting an error. Somethng to the point of unable to launch arts, make sure artsd is running and your kdelibs is not older then kdemulitmedia, which it is not. They are both 3.1.3 with kdelibs being 3.1.3-9 and kdemultimedia being 3.1.3-4.
  15. How are you trying to ping the MD machines - using the ip address or the hostname? Generally, if you can access a share on the machine, then you can also ping the machine. However, you may not be able to ping using the hostname, just he IP address.
  16. First thing that I would look at would be the workgroup. This really shouldn't matter, but you never know. On your linux machine you have it spelt as HOME1 and on your win2k machine you have it as home1. This may be causing a problem. (hey, its worth checking) Second thing would be to check that you don't have any firewalls running on either computer. These can seriously bugger things up. If you are running a firewall, then you will probably have to punch a hole in for whatever port samba is using. My first guess would be that this is the problem. You have shorewall, or some other firewall, running on your linux computer that is getting in the way.
  17. Absolutely nothing. There really is no best or better distro. There is simply different focuses for each distro and which focus best matches your own. Mandrake - focused on the newbie desktop home user, also tends to be very cutting edge in terms of included software versions Red Hat - focused on the business desktop market, and goes more for stability than cutting edge versions (although that is changing some) SuSe - focused on just about everyone Gentoo - focused on the do it yourself user Debian - focused on the totally secure stable server/desktop market And each distro do some things better then other distros and other things worse. I personally use both Red Hat and Mandrake. Mandrake on my desktop server because I really like the more cutting edge features and the urpmi packaging system. However, Red Hat is the only distro that I can time after time install with out a problem onto notebooks, so that is what I use on my laptop. The best advice is to try each of them that interest you and stick with the one that you like best. That is the true strength of open source software -- choice.
  18. Since I can't simulate this on my win2k box, a screenshot of the dialog box or something would help. I tried searching for this on google groups, but have yet to find anything. My suggestion - get the little dsl/cable router and it will solve all your problems. Will keep looking for ya though.
  19. Okay, just for a little clarification here - you are running one windows 2000 computer with 2 network cards in it - you are running a Linux box with a single network card - you have the cable modem connected to the win2k box in eth1 - and you have the linux box connect to the win2k box through eth2 right? And you have internet sharing turned on? My first suggestion would to go and get a cable/dsl router/firewall and use that. This will solve all of your problems. However, in order to solve this one, I think a little more info is needed. Last question, do you have any firewall software running on either computer?
  20. Let's see Linux Server Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz processor ECS something or other mobo 768 megs of PC-133 SDRAM TNT2 16 meg video 60 gig Maxtor drive KVM A small little computer, but it gets the job done. I have others, but they are all running some form of windows so are not worth mentioning here.

    Database

+1 for dbdesigner 4 I am using it to redesign the database backend for my website and am finding it an excellent tool to use. It allows you to visually build mysql databases. You can then link your design directly to the database and perform full sql queries against the database.
  22. Not too much help here, but exactly what computer are you trying to install Mandrake onto and get the sound working on? Also, what is the sound card/chip, etc... I am going to assume that since it is a cpi that you are trying to install Linux onto a notebook, if that is the case, check this link out http://www.linux-laptop.net/ You might find some helpfull tips there from other people who have done similiar installs.
  23. Let's see, what keeps me using Windows? 1. Macromedia software. I use Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Freehand a lot in what I do and I have yet to find a suite of products on Linux that can match these. 2. Adobe software I, and my wife, use Photoshop a lot. We are both photographers and have about 5 years experience using the software. That is not something you can change easily. Solution: Mac OS X As soon as I can find the money I will be buying a nice shiny new Mac G5. It's unix based. I do, however, have a computer that is completely clean; it only contains reiserfs partitions and is running Mandrake 9.1. I use it for all my programming for school and many other things. 3. Last but not least - Games. I prefer pc based games over console games. I don't have a solution for this one yet though.
