  1. Well I started on a conversion spray and hope to reach the tenth by next week. I admitt it is not even close to aRTEE's reach but all little things help hehe.
  2. Don't get me wrong aRTEE, i do not expect anything for nothing and I do not mind contributing even in cash to support the linux environment and make sure we will brake the monopoly of Micro$oft. I am just carefull not to create yet another resemblence of a money hungry monopolist. Also I believe that the hardware manufacturors are the ones that could do more financial support to the Linux developers as they will help them sell their products. Even the large corporations with their big server farms have the leverage to financially support the linux developers. It strikes me that all expect the end users to (continuously) pay for it whereas them using it already creates the multy billion market the industry is proffiting from already. We have to stop thinking that the end users can cough up and spent ever more cash, THAT is why I support Linux! We are wasting tons of resources simply to keep the economic profit growing of a select few and I refuse to continue supporting that treadmill. Again I do not mind spending cash to support Linux but on the right terms and not to create yet another marketig$ machine. I am willing to contribute my time to test, evaluate and improve the product (all for free) and I am willing to buy the gismo's, books or the hardware to operate Linux on, but let the industry pay the developers to make the hardware do what it is supposed to do. That way I do not have to pay to get something and pay again to make it work or pay yet again to fight the one I payed already over and again.
  3. Yes i would like to see how that is done, because it bothers me often that there are that many items on the taskbar. Like i always run xmms and want it to be present on top of all, but i do not need it to take up space on the taskbar. Help (please)
  4. Eventhough i might be a noob, perhaps my battle with nvidia drivers helps you to overcome the c header problem. Ie i had to cope a c header file i recieved from someone else before i ran the nvidia driver .run file and it worked fine for me (in the end). Its a wild guess but who knows: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=19143
  5. In my simple view this case is simple: Linux gives you lots of headages for free Window$ does the same if not worse and charges for it So if i am going to have a headage either way, please dont make me pay for it! As to the fast pace of upgrades, lets all embrace the pace of it, as far as i can see linux is moving at a faster pace as windows will ever be able to manage. If you are tired of all the options you have, just narrow it down and wait for the official releases.
  6. The whole idea on Linux and the Open Source software is exactly that it is open and free. Starting to ask money for it in any way shape or fashion defeats the purpose of it. Where is that line where it says: If you contribute whatever you can to the open community you get all the other efforts in return, for free! I do like the mandrake distribution and its ease of use and i dont mind contributing to it as i am doing in my limited capacity. But i firmly object against any effort from Mandrake to push for commercial benefits under the umbrella of the free and open world. Once they start that way, it wont take long before they act like Micro$oft. As soon as i dont have the access to the necessary updates or downloads i will simply stop using it and advise anybody else to do exactly the same. Besides i believe that Mandrake can better put the marketing efforts into developing and improving the community, we will follow the good products and there is no need to pull us in.
  7. Well so far i converted 2 people to it and 1 lined up to change as soon as i resolve the issues i am having. Im working on another few so i hope to reach the 10 mark within 2 weeks! Beer anyone?
  8. nice try but uh no thanks Its strange how far people go to promote window$ as if they are not earning enough already. Well it took me some time to dare and make the plunge to the open and free world of Linux and i must say i am loving it eventhough i am having issues installing mandrake 10.1 CE and make my wacom tablet work properly. I am comitted to it now and have no desire whatsoever to go back to the excessively expensive winblow$. They keep building ever more crap to satisfy they greed and lust for ever more $. I run 3 computers and all will be switched to Linux shortly. And all my friends have to switch too, because i stop supporting them in xp. Hey coming to think of it XP or XPensive in every way :deal:
  9. :woops: how do i create the file and how do i link it to that file? Meanwhile i did insert the line nvidia as suggested and x starts nicely, i will add the other line as per your suggestion err how to read the file?
  10. OK, i was still stuck, trying to use the following link, ie to install a patch for 6111: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=37579 I can't even xtract the file suggested. I know i must be doing something wrong, but i just cant get my arms around it. I suppose $ means a command in a terminal window as user, right? I even tried it as root but nothing happends. bash reports simply command not found BUT, continuing to read it suggested to edit the /etc/modprobe.preload file and add "nvidia" on a new line without the ¨¨. Which i did and Woohooooo it loads and X server comes up nicely. Mission completed (except for checking the log to see if there are any more errors hehe) i think i deserved that one B)
  11. Thanks you are right in this so i already found out. Meanwhile i updated my previous post to reflect where i am at now. Help anyone, please...
  12. Almost there ... Initially i thought i made an error installing the nvidia driver. ie forgot to do all of the steps, ie 6 b-d, but those lines were already there or omitted. This is what i did thusfar: 1. download latest driver package (6111 in this case) 2. download the c header file pm.h found elswere in this post 3. open a terminal window and enter su followed by the password 4. copy the c header file pm.h in /usr/linux/include/linux/ 5. enter telinit 3 to shutdown X server 6. login as root 7. enter sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run 8. enter vi /etc/X11/XF86Config and edit file as follows: a. replace: "vesa"or "nv"with "nvidia" b. add in module section : load "glx" (ed. line already there) c. remove: load "dri" (ed. line not found) d: remove: load "GLcore" (ed. line not found) I rebooted and noticed i still had the same problem ie, driver failed to load. I went throught the motion of getting the gui back as described before. Via the nV News Forum (www.nvnews.net) i got the advice that the glx module was not loaded properly because the reference in the config file to libglx.a was incorrect and the glx module was not loaded. This is what i did next: 9. open terminal window as root 10. repeat step 8. ie edit the XF86Config file 11. enter /sbin/modprobe nvidia (the module loaded appearantly without a problem) I rebooted again but still module failed to load and no gui again. So i tried the new found knowledge to bring back the gui as follows: 12. login as root 13. repeat step 11 ie enter /sbin/modprobe nvidia 14. exit root and login as user 15. enter kde (to bring up my desktop which is kde) Woohoo, all loaded fine. So checking the XF86Config file again i noted the following lines: Load "glx" # 3D layer Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a" From the advise I got earlier assumed the 2nd line was the same as the 1st one ie both loading the glx module so I deleted the last one. Still X server would not load properly so i repeated steps 12 through 15 which is where i am know. I tried to locate the libglx.a file in the /usr/X11R6/ folder (including subdirectories) but couldnot locate it. So what to do next? help anyone, please...
  13. In the nvidia driver installation section you refer to : "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run" isnt the latest package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run ?
  14. OK im going to copy the file as said and then install nvidia driver. see below the results Meanwhile for those fighting with the same issue, i did a clean install and managed to locate the vesa driver hidden in the "other" branch which opend during the install process. Ie at some point a summary is showed and it gives u the option to change things, thats where you can change the video driver. select vesa by expanding the bottom most option and scroll down to vesa. Alternatively, if u already installed linux and are stuck at the command prompt: type su and password type and enter drakconf select display select driver and then scroll to and expand xorg and select vesa quit and save changes type and enter exit start X Installation of NVIDIA drivers: Installed the driver after i copied the pm.h file as said, changed the XF86Config file as advised in the readme file but still errors with the driver: 1. when running the sh NVIDIA... command an error was displayed: "warning: your kernel was configured to include rivafb support as a loadable kernel module. The riveafb driver conflicts with nvidia driver; the nvidia kernel will still be built and installed... 2 new fatal server error when starting X see log file attached Meanwhile i switched back to the vesa driver which btw still produces the failed to set write-combining range ... error more help needed
  15. Woohoo, yes changing "nv" to "vesa" in the XF86Config file gave me the gui. For those that might have the same problem here is what i did. Since i am not familiar in changing the config file from the command prompt i had to do it in winblows: 1. From the linux command prompt i typed : cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /mnt/floppy (lol yes i copied it to an old fashioned floppy since i didnt know how else to access the linux directory from windows) 2. Rebooted to windows; opend the file with write; searched and replaced the "nv" into "vesa"; saved the file back on the floppy 3. Rebooted to linux; logged in as user; changed to root using the su command and gave the password; on the prompt i typed: cp /mnt/floppy/XF86Config /etc/X11 4. Then i tried to open my KDE desktop by typing: kde and it worked!!! Great stuff So now i have to install the nvidia drivers. I still assume i have to follow your instructiosn. So i installed the kernel source via the configure your computer button on the bottom left of the window (which i could now i had the gui back). I have the latest ...611.pkg1.run file from nvidia and are waiting for the file you were going to post.
  16. Xorg.0.log.txt is the Xorg error log XF86Config.txt is the XFConfig file I added the .txt extension to upload the files Meanwhile someone gave me 2 options ie 1 set display to vesa mode using drakconf or 2 install nvidia linux drivers. These 2 options didnt work cuz 1 different settings produce the same error and 2 i cannot download the nvidia driver cuz the file is displayed rather then downloaded. I know tried to save it as the .run file and hope it will still work.
  17. Hi all, I have problems with the mandrake 10.1 community edition, ie X wont start at all. I tried 2 installs and appearantly it has problems with the video setup. 18. Hi all, im looking for a replacement of the sniper.exe that was included in the earlier versions of novell network software back in the early nineties. I have been looking for this program for a while now and cant find it. I always had great fun playing this simple game over the network with my colleagues. So perhaps anyone knows to locate this little program or has the juice to create it. I am sure it will conquer the world in no time!
  19. Hi folks im new to this community and new to linux as well. I finally decided to stop granting Bill Gates to earn 2 billion euros per year in increased income. So if you need my help, im fluent in english and german, my native language is dutch. Although im not a programmer or anything that comes close, i have a keen eye and can find my way easily around in any kind of software.
