  1. Yes the release is a Thia specific one.
  2. Go with 9.1 its juat a better distro. Even though it too has a few bugs just like every other distro. It looks great also. The bloat difference between 9.0 and 9.1 is nothing really. Go ahead and install KDE. If its never used it can't slow down the system and the apps that come with it are nice.
  3. Have you tried setting everything in the MCC->network to the default and dhcp settings. You shouldn't need more than that with an external router.
  4. Was there a driver for the card in windows? In other words would it have worked? I was thinking that since you connect to the net via a cable modem and thats connected directly to the computer maybe you would need to flush the MAC address from the ISP's system and let them reset to the new card. I have heard about doing this but just don't know how. Maybe someone in the know can help out in that respect. Or you can just call the isp and ask them to. Just an idea. And please correct me if I'm way off.
  5. Crystal Display (LCD), 256,000 colors. RESOLUTION - 1024 x 768 @ 60/75 Hz 640 x 480 @ 60/75 Hz 800 x 600 @ 60/75 Hz PIXEL PITCH - 0.297mm x 0.297mm FREQUENCY - Horizontal: 30 ~ 60 kHz Vertical: 56 ~ 75 Hz I found this at a Hansol site for the 15" display. Have you tried setting it for 640x480 yet? Oh and make sure the color depth is set right. Just some ideas here.
  6. I just hope its true. Wouldn't that mean that M$ incorporated the same code as SCO then afterwards licensed SCO's copy to cover their backsides? I want this to go to court now just to see what comes out.
  7. Try stay away from the FIC. I just had quite a bit of trouble with them. Sent me two bad MB in a row and both times new what the problem probobly was as soon as I called on it. Both times it was a manufacturers problem, not mine. I ended up with an asus. Worked first time.
  8. IBM just had a sale on refurbished terminals running linux. Under 200 US dollers. Integrated 12 inch monitor, keyboard, mouse and of all things a phone. Small foot print and a safe environment. Check with them if you get a chance.
  9. I love it!!!! M$ can spend every doller they have for all I care. As my one friend says."No matter how much you polish that turd its still a turd." He was refuring to my old car. But it applies to M$. Governments are moving to linux for cost and security(privacy). M$ has none of this. Giving turds away is no way to make friends.
  10. Do you leave the cable moden on when you reboot? My system takes a little longer to boot past eth0 if I turn off the cable modem. Just a few moments but its noticable. Mozilla/netscape are two of the larger browsers out there so they take a little longer to load and use. Opera is a lean and fast browser. There are others even faster. How are your file systems setup?
  11. Hey Steve did you ever get your scanner really cooking? I think you did but I'm not sure I don't remember you ever saying.
  12. Well at least we know the sound card need a little more work then. As for the MP3's try xmms . Works like a charm for me. It should play off the zip drive also. You can also play off the windows partitions if you have them mounted. I even play streight off my other win98 computer using SAMBA to access it on my lan. As for the scanner you might have to check the SANE web site. I installed all the latest from them and my USB Mustec scanner works great.
  13. Theproblem COULD be you USb hub. Several people have posted problems here with hubs not letting linux recognize the devices attached. Do a search here first. You could try unplugging all the usb stuff and booting linux. Then plugging in each piece one at a time and seeing if Mandrake picks them up. Mandrake should. This might tell you just what combinations of stuff work well and what stuff gives linux a problem. Post back after this test.
  14. Total lock ups. 0 X cracking up. 1, don't know why, I think it might have been a glitch with my ext3 fs. Rebooted the system and everything ran fine. I use netscape and its starting to lockup once in a while. But a one minute wait and it continues normaly. Othen than me screwing with something Mandrake 9.1 is a rock.
  15. Nice rerelease of an old set of articals. http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/sto...2913644,00.html Wonder if the writer even knows half the kra** hes talking about?
  16. Try typing in startx or just kde Linux has a nice command line feature. Just type the first letter or few letters of a command and then hit the "tab" key. This will finish typing the command for you or give you a list of commands starting with that set of letters. To find out more about a command you could try typing in the command name like "startx" with "--help" after it. This brings up a help file if there is one for it. Or you can type in "man -a" then the command name for the manual(instruction) pages on the command. X refers to the Xwindow gui system. All the gui's use the xwindow system. It provides a common base for programers to work from when making a gui.(I think thats it) post back the results of your trying. If the gui does not come up then a little work might have to be done to configure it. Nothing hard just a few commands.
  17. As long as your still posting then things must be good. The last i heard you on some gooood drugs and trying to work on linux. They must have been really good. Its good to know your still around. Keep postin!!!
  18. Greeneggs!!! Long time no see. Hows it going? How are the boys?
  19. Can you list the system your trying to load it on and what you've tried doing to get it going. I know that sometimes Mandrake can get confused if you have a cdrom or dvdrom on the same cable as a hard drive. This can also default the speed of the drives to the lowest speed.
  20. How is your hardware setup? Does Mandrake recognise your second harddrive at all?
  21. Since you've decided to try Mandrake out please give it a honest effort. How long have you been using MS? Vs how long have you been using linux? How many drivers have you had to load into your MS systems right after loading the OS. I had to load a driver for everything in the box. In Mandrake I have to load one to IMPROVE my vidio and one for my sound chipset. Never one for anything else from scanners and printers to cd-rw's and ethernet cards. Less than an hour and I have a total desktop................ Bzzzzz. oh well there goes the trolling boat I guess.
  22. They have them. I use a VIA mb. I need the ones for the on board sound, not the vidio. I use Nvidia for that. Hope the operation has been ok. And I hope your up and going soon.
  23. Have you installed the drivers from the VIA web site?
  24. How are the boarders of the screen? Are they a little off from when things run normally? If they are then its a screen resolution problem. The games are trying to run at a rate that your monitir can't handle the right way. I get that kind of thing when i try to push my monitor a little to hard. Find out if you can change the resolution in the game to what your normaly running on your desk top. Maybe this way you won't have to load in a different vidio driver or edit anything by command line yet. Though I think you might have to in the long run. If you set your monitor to its default settings how much boarder do you have around the screen normaly? I know i twiddle with the monitor settings to get that last little bit of my screen used.
