  1. iphitus, It does not matter whether or not you have ext3 compiled into the kernel so long as you have it as a module. Which is why you have initrd. When you have the root partition in some non standard place you want ram disk support which will load the kernel and respective modules which will then allow you to mount whatever type of filesystem you want, provided you have them compiled as modules. Right now I am writing this message from such a system. I have an IDE and a SCSI drive. In my bios I have chosen to boot from my ide drive. So the bootloader resides there. The SCSI drive has my / partition and others. And I have it all working.
  2. what about the modules?? Forgive me but I have never upgraded a kernel like this before. I have always compiled my kernel from source. I see the vmlinuz in the /boot partition but am wondering about the modules. And thanks bvc for all the links on your previous posts.
  3. I have a dual Pentium III 650 Mhz. processor. Also I haven't had any trouble compiling the kernel. I don't know whether the mdk kernel will do the trick. Also I would appreciate some directions as to how to use urpmi in the kernel upgrade process. thanks
  4. Hello all, I am trying to Install the Vanilla 2.6.0 Kernel on my 9.2 mdk download edition. I have the glibc-static-devel. Installed and the module-init-tools 0.9.15 pre-4. Have compiled the kernel and modules. The module_install worked fine too without any Unresolved Symbol stuff. I do use the mkinitrd to create the initrd.img file and the file is mention in lilo.conf But when I reboot my system. I get the following error message. mount: error 6 mounting ext3 pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot,sysroot/initrd) failed: 2 freeing unused kernel memory: 304k freed kernel panic: no init found. try passing init=option to kernel I have an IDE and a SCSI Disk. I boot from my IDE drive and the root partition is on SCSI.(/dev/sda5) I have tried googling the web and for the past 3 day have been trying to solve the issue including several rebuilds of the kernel with and without ext3 support in the kernel and as module. Any info to proceed in the right direction will be appreciated.
  5. Seem to have found the answer to my own question...... First off , I had to create a zone for the pptp connection.....ex Zone Display Comments wrk Work pptp to work Next in the masq file I added Interface Subnet Address ppp0 192.168.1.0/24 in the interfaces file had to add this entry #ZONE INTERFACE BROADCAST OPTIONS wrk ppp0 192.168.1.255 dhcp in the tunnels file added this entry # TYPE ZONE GATEWAY GATEWAY ZONE PORT pptpclient wrk 192.168.1.7 And lastly in the rules file #ACTION SOURCE DEST PROTO DEST SOURCE ORIGINAL ACCEPT wrk fw tcp 22 - NOTE: THESE ENTRIES ARE IN ADDITION TO WHAT MDK ALREADY HAD IN THERE.... Restart shorewall and connect via pptpclient and you should be able to ssh into the remote host.

  7. Hi Gowator, Thanks for the reply......But then the question is will my ICS still work ?? Because I did try reinstall of shorewall from their site.....Agreed at that point in time I had very little or no knowledge of shorewall firewall. But All of my connections were blocked and I had difficulty trying to use ICS.
  8. Hi, I am running MDK9.1 download. I have two nics. One is connected to the internet via adsl. The other is my local network. I use pptpclient to connect to a remote machine via the internet. The connections get established I am assigned a IP address. But if I try to ssh into the remote machine I get connection refused ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.11 port 22: Connection refused. The syslog entry for that connection shows the following..... Shorewall:OUTPUT:REJECT:IN= OUT=ppp0 SRC=192.168.1.18 DST=192.168.1.11 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=65535 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=34738 DPT=22 WINDOW=3840 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 I have gone through a lot of doc's for iptables & shorewall. I am looking to preserve the shorewall install of MDK......so no new reinstalls of shorewall Please ! Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  9. is passed the following argument: noapic My bad when I said there is no irq conflict. Actually irq 17 is used by Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. My thanks to a posting by Todd. My issue has been resolved.
  10. but gives transmit errors when checked by dmesg command. Mandrake control center sees the network card, am able to assign IP/s to it and ping the same but when I try to ping other machines on the network it just fails. Also when left for a dhcp server to assign the address the nic never receives an IP. The machine is a 2 ghz pentium celeron. 256 MB ram agp 4x extreme graphics card integrated sound card Sis Output of dmesg 8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.25 eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xd0940000, 00:20:ed:6c:c7:01, IRQ 17 eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C' eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 41e1. NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out eth0: Tx queue start entry 4 dirty entry 0. eth0: Tx descriptor 0 is 00002000. Also cat of /proc/interrupts shows the nic receiving a non conflicting irq Would be happy to provide more info if someone can help !!
  11. I am running Mandrake 9.0 on a Compaq Presario 4850. It's a Pentium III 300 Mhz machine. 176 Meg Ram, ATI 3D Rage LT Pro, 3Com nic, compaq monitor, quantum HD 6.4 Gb on Secondary Controller, Maxtor 6.2 Gb on Primary Master and Compaq DVD Rom on Slave. Win Modem with Lucent Chipset. and an integrated sound card with ESS 1887 Chipset. The Machine freezes up a lot too with the swap on a different drive I have just moved it back. I shall report on the progress in a day or two. Please let me know if you need further info...
  12. Thank you both for your replies. I have done the exact things that you mentioned with diskdrake and the swap was moved. But I thought the system should speed up if the swap is moved to a different hard drive than the data drive. Also both HD's are on different controllers. How ever I am yet to notice any performace increase instead I think I am getting degradation in terms of performance, after having moved the swap space. Can this be happening ??? The other issue was during install the diskdrake sees both drives but the install would not go forward if the swap was on a different drive...refer to my original posting. Thanks again.
  13. Thanks bvc, But I am a bit confused by your answer..... Could you be more specific. I have tried the install of 9.0 something like 6-times. At first I suspected that somehow the hard drive was damaged. However after formatting it with MS-Dos the drive became available, just fine. Some times the drive would just hang during the format of ext3 partitions. At another time when I chose the text install I almost got through the install except that X server install crashed and I was left with linuxEBDA too big error. I researched that and found that this error had occured on my system due to the fact that I had turned the system off after X install crash. So I began again. Now I have the system up with the swap and other partitions on the same disk. I would like to move the swap to another disk. How can this be accomplished? Again Thanks for your response.
  14. Hi, I am trying to install mandrake on a Primary Master Hard drive and want to put the swap partition on a Secondary Master Hard drive. But during install of Mandrake 9.0, the system just hangs after going through the 15-20% of package install. On one instance I even received an ldconfig error. But nothing is duplicated or atleast the errors that I have received have never before been seen by me. The machine would just freeze up on me and leave me with no choice but to reboot. However with the swap space on the same drive I am able to install without any trouble. My question: Is it possible to install the software with the above config. or do I have to install the system with swap space residing on the same hard drive as the root and other partition. And if so can we move the swap partition to another drive after the install and how ? Thanks.
