  1. I have to buy a new monitor, and it will probably be a flat screen LCD monitor. I've googled around trying to find which brands/types go with Linux, but have be unsuccessful. Can all work with mandrivia? Do I have to worry about my graphics card, too? Below is my graphics card and my system. Kieth Identification Vendor: ?ATI Technologies Inc Description: ?RV280 [Radeon 9200] Media class: ?VGA compatible controller # uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.17-14mdv #1 SMP Wed May 9 21:11:43 MDT 2007 i686 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux
  2. Actually, I "messed up" my boot loader a few days ago, maybe even a week ago. I thought I would just delete the boot loader file, then re-install it by putting in the Mandriva dvd and up-grading. Before doing that though, I had to know where the boot loader was, and what it was called, which is why I ask the original question. Then after I found the boot loader, I decided to write another question (the other post I opened), and see if there was other ways (better ways?) to resolve the problem. Kieth
  3. Well, here's my story. I installed Mandriva Spring, and everything went very well. I used the grub boot loader. After just a couple of days, I thought I would try lilo. I didn't like it, so I went back to grub. That's all I did - honest!!! Well, after that it wouldn't load for anything. After booting up the computer, after BIOS kicked in, I just got a blank screen. I tried the rescue disk, but it still wouldn't boot up. If I re-installed the Windows boot loader, I was able to get into WXP, though. Anyway, after much tinkering around, I finally put the Mandriva dvd in, re-booted, and "up graded", then had it re-put my boot loader on the "first sector of drive (MBR)". Still nothing. I did it again, this time choosing to put the boot loader on a floppy. That solved the problem! Now, if some kind computer genius could just tell me what to do to be able to boot up without my floppy, I would really appreciate it. I thought about deleting the boot loader files, both lilo and grub, then re-doing the "up-grade", but before doing it, I thought I would ask for advice. I suppose there is a "proper" way of just editing one of the files. My system and the grub boot loader files are (I can't find the old lilo boot loader): # uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.17-14mdv #1 SMP Wed May 9 21:11:43 MDT 2007 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux /boot/grub/menu.lst timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan gfxmenu (hd1,0)/boot/gfxmenu default 1 title windows root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 title mdv Linux kernel (hd1,0)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-14mdv BOOT_IMAGE=mdv_Linux root=/dev/hdb1 resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd1,0)/boot/initrd-2.6.17-14mdv.img Thanks, Kieth
  4. I'm also having the same problem. I was thinking my monitor was going out. Here's my system. # uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.17-14mdv #1 SMP Wed May 9 21:11:43 MDT 2007 i686 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux Video card: Radeon 9200 Kieth
  5. If the boot loader is memorized in the first sector of drive (MBR), what is it's file name and where exactly is it located/memorized? Thanks, Kieth
  6. I have a dumb question, seeing as how I'm a computer un-geek. What does all this mean for me? Kieth
  7. This is the kernel I'm using: [root@localhost Desktop]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.19.5-1mdv #1 Sat Feb 24 04:51:15 EST 2007 x86_64 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux To do an update via Internet, could I just remove my current urpmi sources and then do a: urpmi --auto-select --auto (as Ian mentioned), without having to update, change my kernel? Kieth
  8. With Mandriva 2007 64 bit, I'm still having problems. Is it worth a try installing the "Spring" 64 bit, or just do a 32 bit install? Kieth
  9. The way I found out which file Thunderbird was using, was to change the name of the file, adding -old. Then I re-started Thunderbird. If it wanted to open/start a new account, I knew that the file I changed was the file it was using. I then canceled what Thunderbird wanted to do, closing it, and then re-changing the name I had previously changed. It a dumb way of finding out which file it uses, but it worked for me. Kieth
  10. I've followed every thread, did what every one said and invented a few of my own, and I still haven't been able to get java to work on my system. I just presumed it was because I was using the following system: # uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.19.5-1mdv #1 Sat Feb 24 04:51:15 EST 2007 x86_64 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux Video card: Radeon 9200 Therefore, I presumed that as new up-dates come out, I will eventually get my system running properly (as there are other problems, too.)
  11. OK, I understand what you're saying. Not too many months ago, I had a difficult time getting my graphics card working correctly, getting the dkms installed, etc. With help from this forum, I was able to do it. Unfortunately, I do not have 3D acceleration, and cannot have it. Therefore, this time, I think I will just leave well enough alone. I'll just use different screen savers or just let it stay blank. It isn't worth the effort. It isn't worth taking a risk of messing up what I now have. Thanks anyway. I appreciate the offer to help. Kieth
  12. Could the problem of changing languages be related to the problem that hirohitosan encountered and solved, at: link This is what he did: My 'it' file reads:
  13. My screen saver doesn't work either, giving me a blank screen like it did for hirohitosan. I tried what cebo said (below), but it didn't work. Here's the information that ian asked about. Any idea on how to resolve the problem for me? Thanks.
  14. Sorry I didn't comment on this sooner. To be honest, I haven't even look in "Art and Design" for some time. Anyway, I can easily change from Italian to English and back again, having everything in Italian. I believe the reason is because when I originally installed Mandriva, I chose to install Italian as a second language. There must be some packages/files that are installed at that time that make the difference. When I choose the Italian language, it isn't just Firefox that changes, but everything. Kieth
  15. OK, if I get any ideas, I'll let you know. Ciao, Kieth
  16. Go to Configure your computer and type in your password. Press the button that lets you add software. Then in the search space, type in locales. You will get a list of files. Then scroll down and see if you have the file installed. While I'm thinking of it, have you updated your programs (aggiornamenti)? If not, you can also do that, as it might help.
  17. Pluto, I haven't looked at my boy's desktop for a long time, and I have made some updates, so I thought I better check. Anyway, I just switched my desktop over to Italian (using gnome), and everything seems to be in Italian. Firefox is in Italian, along with all the menus. OpenOffice is in Italian, along with all the menus. Terminal is in Italian, as you can see below. [kieth@localhost Desktop]$ su Parola d'ordine: [root@localhost Desktop]# adsl-start ........... Connected! [root@localhost Desktop]# What is it that you still see in English? Kieth
  18. Pluto, don't worry about posting in the wrong section, we all do it at times. I've had mine moved more than once. :P I think the biggest problem you're having is what tyme said, not everything is translated into Italian. I always choose English, but my boys choose Italian, but there is still some things written in English in their applications. With Firefox, did you download it off the Italian or English site? Kieth
  19. I tried it before, but anyway, here's what happened. But like I mentioned before, I did download them, I just had to go to http://rpm.pbone.net/. They must not be in the x86_64 repositories. # urpmi real-codecs no package named real-codecs
  20. I keep my urpmi data base up to date, but when I tried to download the files, I got this message. # urpmi real-codecs-1.2.3plf no package named real-codecs-1.2.3plf I guess I need to find another download site. Mine are: ftp://ftp.mandrivauser.cz/plf/mandriva/20...e/binary/x86_64 ftp://ftp.easynet.fr/plf/mandriva/2007.0/...s/binary/x86_64 ftp://ftp.cica.es/mirrors/Linux/plf/mandr...e/binary/x86_64 ftp://spirit.bentel.sk/mirrors/plf/mandri...s/binary/x86_64
  21. You'll have to go to http://rpm.pbone.net/ to download some of them.
  22. I have Mandriva 2007, and just a couple of hours ago I was able to get the auto login to work. At the login screen/page, choose 'configure login manager', then give your password, then choose 'security', then 'enable automatic login'. I also tried to get the automatic login to work from within Gnome, but, like you, it wouldn't work.
  23. I usually just play a card game, like Patience. My boys will also play card games, but they also like Super Tux and Super Tux Kart. KBounce, gav and a few others are also often played.
