Just for the fun of it, I decided to install clamav to see if I was mailing any viruses to my "Windows" friends. This is the first scan I've done in a long time. After the scan - no viruses!! Thank you Linux!! Kieth

I got it, thanks. Kieth

Actually, if possible, I would also like to have it, too. If you don't mind, could you send it to me? Thanks, Kieth

On "Menu", go to "Tools", then you'll see the Konsol icon (computer monitor with black screen).

If you are in Europe, try this site. It's the European format. http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu Kieth

I went to devices (the icon on the desktop), media:/, just like you said. That was the only way I was able to find the partitions/hard drives. Kieth

OK, I finally resolved the problem. Strange though, as I was working with konqueror in root (from a konsol, I typed su, then the password, then konqueror), I was not allowed to enter into the linux or ntfs partitions, but only the fat one. This morning I "dummy loaded" Mandriva with my cd live disk. It changed the boot loader, but I still wasn't able to boot into either linux or WXP. I then just did a live update, which of course resolved everything. My biggest question is why couldn't I read all the partitions, even if I was root? Thanks for the replies/help. Kieth

I see that I didn't explain myself well. I am in root, and the only partition I can mount is the fat one. I'm denied entrance into the others. Therefore, I cannot get to the menu.lst file. The system: ide Partitions: 10G (fat) , 36G, 41G, 71G I can't remember the other information. Kieth

Well, I'll see if I can explain what I did. I was trying to install the kernel source, via urpmi in terminal, and I ended up adding a source I didn't want. No problem, I took it off. I decided to boot into WXP, and I noticed in the "logout" box (in Mandrivia) that I had another option: alt_linux, along with my "normal" choices. In MCC, in the boot option, I deleted it. The other options were still present, listing my correct kernel as the linux boot option. Afterwards, I logged out, and choose the option to reboot into WXP. It booted OK. Then from WXP, I choose to option to reboot, to get back into Mandrivia. At the boot screen, there were my 2 chooses, WXP and Linux. Only, nothing happened, and I couldn't do anything. Everything was frozen. I could not even boot into WXP. I have 2 hard disks, 80 gigabit each. One has linux, the other has WXP and a 10gb fat partition. Now, with the live cd, opening konqueror with terminal (in root) I can get into the fat partition, but not the others. I'm told I do not have permission. Kieth

Mandriva 2008.0 i586, will it work on x86_64?
Kieth replied to Countable's topic in Installing Mandriva
I run 32 bit on a 64 bit machine, and it works fine. Kieth -
Well, because of my great talent, I somehow managed to mess up my boot loader. I'm writing this using my Mandrivia live disk. I use grub. Is there anyway to get to the boot loader file, to fix it, using this live disk (or doing it another way)? While writing this, I am downloading the Mandrivia One iso file, in case I have to use it. Thanks, Kieth

Thanks for the reply. I had those files. I then added the kde4 files, in hopes that that would help, but no, no change. Then I went back to /.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc and changed DKMS back to DPMS, AND IT WORKED!!!! :bounce8: :bounce8: Finally, after 2 years I have a screensaver!! Thank you, thank you. Kieth

Hello again, It's been a couple of years since my screensaver has worked. The screen just goes blank. I last asked about it with the Mandriva 2007 installation ( screensaver ). I would like to get it to work now, if at all possible. I do not care if I use opengl screensavers or not. In fact, I don't think I have any installed. The only opengl packages I found on my system are: [root@localhost kieth]# urpme opengl The following packages contain opengl: python-opengl-2.0.1.09-7mdv2007.1.i586 libqtopengl4-4.3.1-12mdv2008.0.i586 From that last post (October 2006), here is some of the information that ian asked for. [root@localhost kieth]# glxinfo | grep direct libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4c direct rendering: Yes [root@localhost kieth]# urpmi mesa-demos Package mesa-demos-7.0.1-10mdv2008.0.i586 is already installed [root@localhost kieth]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.22.12-desktop586-1mdv #1 SMP Tue Nov 20 08:09:17 EST 2007 i686 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux Since the "direct rendering" is now yes, I was hoping that I would be able to get everything working. My graphics card is still the same as last year, which is, according to the MCC: Identification Vendor: ‎ATI Technologies Inc Description: ‎RV280 [Radeon 9200] Before writing this, I also tried putting the following in kdesktoprc, as cebo mentioned, but still no luck: Also, since I thought the DPMS-dependent=false might be a "typo", I put "DKMS. . ." instead. Still no luck. Any idea on how I can resolve the problem? Thanks, Kieth

As you install, just choose the option that sets up the partitions automatically. Then the Mandriva cd will do everything for you, even setting up the /home partition. Kieth

Usually, I read a CD, then it will not read a second one. I re-boot, and then it will read another. I can rarely read two different CDs without re-booting in between.

This link might help. http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=Ko...ebcam%20Support Kieth

Do you have this installed - dkms-gspcav1 ? Also, what kernel are you using? In console type: uname -a . You might need to update the kernel, because if I remember, there was a problem with one, that did not give web cam connections.

Thank you. I'll take care of this as soon as I can. I appreciate all the help and advice. Kieth

Got ya!! I'm a little thick skulled, so it sometimes takes a bit to understand (does age enter into this problem??!!). I never forward anything! At times I send a document (.doc, but written with OpenOffice) to someone, and at times I receive .doc documents. I'm just a "normal" user, that writes using OpenOffice, listens to music off the Internet, writes and sends e-mails, both for work and pleasure, reads the mandriviausers.org forum everyday, and messes up his computer too frequently (which is why I read the forum everyday!! ). My boys use WXP to watch soccer games (until Mandriva Spring I could never get the programs to work in Linux), and play games, both on and off the Internet. I have the K9 web filter on WXP but none on Linux, so therefore only I know how to connect to the Internet on Mandriva. The Panda AV program has worked on getting rid of some problems I've had in the past, but I obviously do not have anything to check in-coming mail. How necessary it is, or what programs to use, I do not know, which is why I'm writing!!

Thank you, thank you, for all the replies. I knew there were advantages of linux over MS when it comes to viruses, but I would like to install an AV program for 2 reasons: 1) You never know, there is still a possibility of viruses being made to affect linux (this is not a major motive, or my main reason), and 2) I send and receive e-mails from MS users. As tyme mentioned, I would like to I use Thunderbird as my mail program. I have 2 hard drives, one with only Mandriva Spring, and one with WXP, but with a partition formatted in fat32, where I have my Thunderbird mail files. That way, I can use Linux to my heart's content, but others in my family can use WXP to theirs. That obviously means that mail is downloaded from both WXP and Mandriva. I use Panda AV on WXP (scanning done by Internet), which I use about 3 times a week. Advice? Should I install an AV program on linux, since it is what I use all the time, therefore more apt to scan for viruses, or should I just let Panda do all the work on WXP, between 2 and 4 times a week? Thanks. Kieth

I searched the forum, and the last time this question was asked was in 2002!! Anyway, I want to install one, but would like to know which ones are now being used, and why? Thanks. Kieth [moved from Software by spinynorman]

This is a controller so you cannot download with 2 different methods. If you use MCC (the icon "Configure your computer"), that's one method. If you use the Terminal (therefore the command "urpmi --auto-select"), that's the second method. You could re-boot, and that would 'un-lock' the urpmi, although there is probably a better way to un-lock it. Kieth PS. Welcome to the Board.

I did a dummy upgrade, but I messed up things so bad, that even that wouldn't work! Kieth

OK, I took care of the problem. I tried doing what scarecrow said, but obviously made a mistake somewhere. Then I couldn't boot up for anything! I just did a clean install.

OK, thanks. I bought a Captiva TFT active matrix, 19 inch, with a 15-pin D-Sub connector, w/speakers. It works great. Kieth
