    Virtual hosts

I have only one PC. I'm part of a LAN. I want to create some 'fake' computers inside the LAN without other hardware.
  2. 2 attempts so far without succes :(. I'm making a third attempt right now ! (I'm burning the MDK 10 CDs as I'm writting this). My little sister is also interested in Linux .... but she also likes Sims games. Does Sims 2 run on Linux ?
  3. If you can ping the Server from Windows then it means there must be a configuration error. Check these things: - all 3 machines are on the same workgroup - your shares are browsable, available and public. What Windows are you running on your IBM laptop ? Are you running a firewall on any of your boxes ?
  4. Yes I should have said that. But people could have assumed I was using the standard version that came with MDK 10 OE. :P Anyway the subject is closed now, the problem is gone .... no sense talking about it anymore.
  5. Maybe it's an acpi problem ? Yes, since my network problems I have acpi trauma . Try booting Linux like this: when you see the lilo screen press escape then type this: linux noapic nolapic acpi=off. Try to configure your network card now from MCC.
  6. Of course we all know that GNOME is better.
  7. Meaning .... hardware ? Yup. There was grief .... because I had to share about 10 folders, many were located on windows partitions :( and not easy to reach because I had to crawl deep for them. It was the only way. THX.
  8. You know, there is a Samba configuration tool in KDE. It's a plugin for Konqueror. Try configuring your samba.conf using that. It works great (at least for me). It is located in: System -> Configuration -> Networking. If it isn't there, install it. Can your IBM laptop access the Server ? Can it "see" it in Smb4k or in My Network Places ? Try typing (in Windows) in explorer this: \\server_ip (ie: 192.168.1.1). It takes a while till Windows "discovers" the Linux machines AFAIK. I'm part of a Windows network the only Linux boxes being mine and the server and we get along well. Windows users "see" me, I "see" them. :)
  9. Well, you can also try the last solution. Make a clean sweep (format your entire hd). Don't forget to backup all your important stuff. After this install your WinXP. Don't use NTFS partitions because they cause more trouble. Use Partition Magic to make the partitions arctic suggested. Then go and install Mandrake Linux ;) Yes you can. I installed WinXP + SP2 after MDK Linux. The only thing I had to do was reinstall the bootloader. You can do that with your installation CD1 for example. Boot it, press F1, type rescue and then choose reinstall bootloader (if I remember right).
  10. Spinynorman officialy declared me a Mandrake guru. This means that I must (be able to) handle it.
  11. Yo, Polish ! How much did it take you to upgrade and what is your Internet connection speed ?
  12. Gee... I'm flattered I'm a guru now  B) Yeah !
  13. Thank you very much for your support, your advices played a crucial part in fixing this problem which gave lots of troubles even to gurus. I managed to fix it myself. I uninstalled Samba completely then I downloaded the latest version and installed. I configured it and now it seems to work fine. I will probably never know why that ugly bug happened or if it will happen again but at least the problem is fixed for now :P.

    fstab won't mount

Ok, thx guys. Everything works now.
  15. Hey !!! Doesn't anybody know the solution ? Where are the "Mandrake gurus" ? I badly need help with this.

    fstab won't mount

OK I made the script, it works if I run it but how can I make Linux to automatically run it on startup ?
  17. Samba is absolutely insane. I started my computer and a guy from the network wanted to get BSplayer from me. He told me to share it. I told him: "don't be stupid it's already shared". And he said that it's not. There are no shared folders. Knowing that Samba has worked flawless so far I decided to check the problem myself. I opened Smb4k. This shocked me : no samba share. I ran the samba configuration tool (the module from Konqueror). Every shared folder's proprieties were changed. The 'browsable' and 'available' checkboxes were unchecked so I checked them myself. After this I told the guy from my LAN to get BSplayer because I fixed the problem. He said that all of them look like printer shares. Again I checked the problem with smb4k and it was true. They didn't look like folders. When I tried to access them with smb4k smb4k said that it can't handle printer shares. What is going on ? Sometimes things that are extremely stupid happen (like this one) and piss me off.

    Domain - SOLVED

You know, there is a tool that makes setting up all the network stuff very easy. It's part of the Gnome System Tools. Go to: System -> Configuration -> Packaging -> Install Software. Type gnome in the search field. In the list of displayed results there should be something like: gnome-system-tools-xxxxxx. Install it. After this go to: System -> Configuration -> Networking -> Networking. There you can configure all your network settings. If you don't have the OE version than try searching for gnome-system-tools-xxxx at rpm.pbone.net.

*faints upon hearing about cybrjackle's internet speed* /me wants such a fast connection :(((((
  20. Gotcha ! It happened to the GNOME master as well It's obviously GNOME's fault and not Netscape. I'll still be using GNOME because it looks so damn good (moded). Maybe KDE is a little more functional & easy to configure but I'm not going to dump GNOME because of this bug, that will get fixed .... hopefully.
  21. Chill out ! It's just a freaking format. All I asked for was nrg support in K3B. There is a work around so it is ok. You don't have to flame me for not hating Nero and it's nrg format. I hate M$ but not Nero and you can't make me do it. :P
  22. Silly me, I meant Ctrl + V for pasting. In this case I'll have to keep the window open for cuting/pasting.
  23. It is popular. For example Virtual CD can create virtual cds using nrg images (in Windauz). Search on the p2p networks. You will find lot's of images in nrg format.
