  1. Hi, since MDK 10.1 CE has been announced I've been interested in upgrading mi MDK 10.0 OF but I don't know how, I really don't want to download and burn all the four ISOs again so, is there any other way to upgrade my system?? I've read something about upgrading via urpmi but I still don't get it, does Linux itself download what is necessary or do I have to point it out? Thanks!
  2. Well, I did as you told me to but it won't compile. It shows the same, "no objective for make, please specify a target" What can I do, has anybody installed this programs successfully?? Thank you!
  3. Hello, some days ago I downloaded the following programs gnotepad+-1.3 gpaint-2-0.2 linux-509 (This is Acrobat Reader 5.0 for linux) zinf-2.2.5.tar clamav-0.75.tar But, when I decided to install them I simply couldn't because something happened, I'm a real newbie so there are plenty Linux things I can't handle. When I unzip for instance gnotepad+-1.3 I see 2 archives, a Makefile.am and a Makefile.in, yesterday I read that the .in file was created with the .am file using automake, I checked and they were right, but , when I try the normal linux commands for installing I can't get any further than ERROR. Here is what I do make (here pops out a message "make *** no target found, please specify a target") Damn! not working, probably I should skip this step and go on. Then I try make install (here pops out another message "No instructions for install") So, after I check the files and find the following Install Install-sh Makefile.am Makefile.in I don't know what to do to install these kind of programs, could you please tell how do I install programs which have Makefile.am and Makefile.in files but not a unique Makefile file?
  4. Hello, I just downloaded gnome-themes-extras-0.7.tar.gz and when I try to install it, I simply can't, here is what I do ./configure make su make install Once I read something about automake I successfully installed it from the 2nd CD but, again when I type the same above, nothing happened, all I saw was a message saying. No target for make , please specify a target What can I do?? P.S: Has anybody installed a slmodem-2.9.9 driver and connected internet successfully?
  5. Well, it seems I'm gonna have to downgrade to kernel 2.4, but, how do I do it?
  6. Well, thanks for your help but, when I unzipped it and tried to run it, it told me that It was built for a 2.4.x kernel, so I couldn't do anything further. Another thing bother me, I downloaded a program and when I unzipped it, there were 2 makefile, a makefile.in, and a makefile.am, when I typed in console make or make install, it said "No makefiles", many of the programs I downloaded showed this makefiles, how can I get them to compile?? I also think I found a possible modem for me in this page http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/ricardowongbr/pctel/ Thanks for everything, but, I'm still stucked, please give me a little nudge!
  7. Well, I don't know , could be the driver's problem??, here is the driver I downloaded slmodem-2.9.9.tar, HSP56 MR (SIS) (COM3), that's under windows, should I put COM3 in linux as well??
  8. Hello, after having donwloaded the drivers for mi PCtel hsp56 modem, and after doing everything for them to work, I finally decide to make the last step, connecting through kppp, here is what I did. Kppp>Configure>Accounts>Tutopia>Authentication>PAP Kppp>Configure>Device>Modem Device= /dev/ttySL0 Flow control= CRTSCTS Line Termination= CR/LF Then I went to console, typed /usr/sbin/slmodemd /dev/slamr0 and Ctrl-C After that, I pressed connect in KPPP and after pumping the message "Modem Ready" it just stayed for eternity in "Initializing Modem" I don't know if the following has something to do with it but, when I pressed Query Modem .. it said "Modem Ready", but, in the ATI text boxes show nothing, does it have to do with this problem? I read something about trying with different combinations of Line Terminations, I tried with CR, LF and CR/LF but, nothing happened, KPPP got stucked for ever. I also read that it might work if the pre init and post init delay setting but, again, nothing happened. What could I do? I feel like I'm really close to it, but, I'm missing one piece of the whole puzzle Thanks!
  9. well, I think that's not the problem, thanks for the suggestion though. I'm still stucked with the same problem , the modem just waits for eternity. Help!!!!!

  11. well, I'm using Gnome (for some reason KDE didn't want to be installed in my computer ). Is kppp a way to create a dial up connection?. Can I use kppp in a Gnome enviroment? Is RP3 the Gnome's "kppp"? If none of the questions before is useful for helping me resolve the problem, then, what should I do? Once again, thank you guys, you've been really pacient with me
  12. Hi there, I just installed the kernel source and everything worked perfectly but, I don't know what to do next , this is what I got after installing everything: [root@localhost sbin]# /usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=USA /dev/slamr0 SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.9 Aug 10 2004 19:35:08 symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/1' created. modem `slamr0' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/1' Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination. After that, what do I have to do in order to connect to the Internet?, I really don't know what to do, so I'm lost big time, I suppose it has something to do with Configuring your Computer>Internet>New connection, though I'm not pretty sure. Thanks for all your help so far!
  13. Well, I'm so newbie in Linux I don't know whether or not I installed it, could you please tell me how to install (o check if) the kernel source? Thanks!
  14. I don't know what I did, but, now when I get in the console it appears david@tutopia instead of david@localhost. When I was trying to configure my internet access I put many times Tutopia and its phone number, then, I realized my modem wasn't being recognized (PCTEL), but, how do I change it back to localhost, when I load GNOME it shows an error, telling me it can't connect tutopia, so , please help me! Thanks!
  15. Hello, I just downloaded the driver for my modem, and when I try to install it following the directions of the Readme file, it shows me two critical error during the making and installing of the driver. According to the Readme file, it should install itself on "KERNEL_DIR=/path/to/linux Default KERNEL_DIR is '/lib/modules/<kerne-version>/build'" But, mandrake 10.0 doesn't have such a directory, the only BUILD directory is in usr/src/RPM/BUILD, but, even if I put that one on the makefile, it still shows the following errors. [david@Tutopia slmodem-2.9.9]$ make make -C modem all make[1]: Entering directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/modem' make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/modem' make -C drivers KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/RPM/BUILD make[1]: Entering directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/drivers' cc -I/usr/src/RPM/BUILD/include -o kernel-ver kernel-ver.c make all KERNEL_VER=2.6.0 make[2]: Entering directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/drivers' make modules -C /usr/src/RPM/BUILD SUBDIRS=/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/drivers make[3]: Entering directory `/usr/src/RPM/BUILD' make[3]: *** No hay ninguna regla para construir el objetivo `modules'. Alto. make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/RPM/BUILD' make[2]: *** [all] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/drivers' make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/win_e/slmodem-2.9.9/drivers' make: *** [drivers] Error 2 And, afterwards, when I type make install and search for the files that are supposed to be installed I see there aren't any of them, I think I should change the directory in the Makefile, but, I don't know where the Kernel Tree is. I think I should replace something in the makefile , but I don't know what, help me, I'm really looking forward surfing the net with Mandrake.
