  1. not an expert (or anything even vaguely close...) but could there be some other bluetooth software that's hoggin your bluetooth dongle?
  2. With Microsoft terminal services, you can get windows over the internet! It might be pretty slow - but it works...
  3. Is there something like this that can be installed over the internet and then access with a simple client?
  4. As a more general reply to anyone else looking to use a script to do something - in Linux we use shell scripts with the extension .sh (usually, although not necessarily) as a kind of equivalent to .bat files. Shell scripting has a slightly different syntax to batch files and contains many of the type of commands you might use every day in a console. For more details - google is your friend ;)
  5. In the short term, Cedega will probably benefit Linux - it is likely to help increase user base. In the long term, however, if the linux user base increases to the point where it is a significant slice of the market then cedega will be bad for linux gaming simply because it is not in their business interests to have games ported. Either they will realise this and try, in the meantime, to develop other revenue streams or they will begin to discourage ports more vigorously I have to say - before I am accused of being a hypocrite (which I freely admit I am) that I did get a copy of Cedega yesterday from a source which will remain unnamed. If the two windows games I play run well in cedega then I will buy a subscription. My desire to tweak has got the better of me...
  6. I'd go for stage 1 personally. I did, in fact, on my very first attempt to install gentoo. You can learn from my mistakes here The only challenging bit really is the kernel compile. But this is actually a great learning expereince for you - try it a few times until you get it right. If you screw up then you can use the gentoo CD to boot into your system and try again.
  7. My problem is that something like wine or cedega really appeals to my desire to tweak things... Despite thinking it's bad for linux gaming I am really curious to see if I could get some of my favourite games to work. But it's not really worth trying unless you use an official version - and then you have to pay and the your game may just not work and you've wasted your money... Hmmm... I'm aware of the games database but none of the games I want to try are on there and that doesn't mean they don't necessarily work... Hmmm...
  8. a defrag utility for linux would be redundant and (if it wasn't free) would be a waste of money...
  9. gentoo is much harder than mandrake but still a very good distro. The big problem with it is that all apps are compiled from source - this means that the average install takes a few days. Arch may be another one to consider. It's very up to date and installs using binaries which make for a quicker install. It is also an "expert" distro though...
  10. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG Your logic is faulty. Now that I've got that out of the way, let me explain why... I do understand the point you're making actually and I can see the logic, but again you are assumin that the aim here is to get everyone to delete their windows partitions and only use linux. Personally I prefer a system like that - but it may not be best for everyone. Second, you are also assuming that Cedega is intended to be a gap bridging piece of software - this is clearly not transgaming's intention. If it was, why do they bother supporting games that now have native linux clients? Why do they not tell people that there is no need to play wolfenstein (3d or return to) or quake in cedega because they can be played natively? Next, your given reasons for not porting games are not based on real research. There are a number of documented instances of games not being ported primarily because of wine/cedega. A number of games companies explicitly state that if you want to play in linux you have to just use wine.
  11. Sorry - I can't be much help, except to suggest that you disable stand by - especially when the laptop is plugged in.. This can be done from the power options in the control panel (just in case you didn't know... ;) )
  12. Soulse, one of the reasons I disagree with you is simply because it's not a either/or situation. It's simply nto a case of people have to use one OS or another - therefore using windows does not in itself damage linux (many of MS business policies do - but that's a different thing) Playing a game on windows simply includes you in the masses of other who do so. Playing a game on cedega is re-inforcing the idea that there is simply no need to port it. Of course the ideal is simply that the linux community has enough clout to persuade games houses to port many/all of their games. We don't yet - maybe we one day will...
  13. They are not. Master volume and a few others remain preserved, but everything is zeroed Why is this happening? The script I use to preserve settings only works on startup/shutdown but closing KDE seems to nuke the settings. Any help?
  14. OK, I have kind of made progress. I now have sound when I log (although i may have to adjust one or two mixer settings) but there is no sound for my wife in KDE (remember I use flux) During KDE startup - it begins to play the startup sounds, but is then stopped - presumably when some kind of setting is loaded. I just tried loading wmix to try and play with mixer settings. PCM volume and FM synth volume are both zeroed - changing them works. I'm going to log in and then out and see if the changes are persisted. Will post back...
  15. you need to make sure you've got the kernel sources installed for the kernel you are running. You then use these sources when you are building the vmware modules
  16. What was your solution? - in case anyone else encounters this or a similar problem.
  17. I think this is what is used in the script I mentionedto preserve settings on bootup and shutdown. The problem is that that isn't where the problem occurs. Whenver KDE is started (or at some point during that session - maybe when KDE is closed) all the volumes are set to nill
  18. Actually - I reckon it is better to dual boot than to use Cedega - but that's just my opinion. Let the flames begin!
  19. I recently installed KDE in a bid to get my wife to use Linux (fairly succesful...) I still log in to flux. The problem is that whenever she has logged in, all alsa mixer settings are reverted to 0. I run a script as a service that saves and restores alsa mixer settings. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?
  20. Click n run will cost you a subscription fee even though (last time I looked) much of the software available on it is available freely. Still I guess you do get a nice easy install of stuff. Other problem is that by default Linspire only gives users a root user and encourages them to use that. This simply isn't a good idea - especially on a newbie distro

    anti-virus

It's a front end to iptables, so it is a good firewall. It comes with a very nice easy to use GUI - so it's easy to use. It's not as highly configurable as just using iptables - but it's a hell of a lot easier!
  22. Also - the equivalent to ipconfig -release and ipconfig -renew is simply to restart you network service which is (distro dependant): /etc/init.d/network restart

    Spamassassin??

many email clients (I've only tested evolution and sylpheed) allow you to use spamassassin without needing fetchmail and procmail You just set up filters which include running spamassassin For help with doing it in evolution just do a search here on the board - the details are here somehwere - probably in tips and tricks For help with sylpheed, you need to go to the sebsite nd look for detail about using the spamassassin plugin
  24. I tried genkernel once and hated it. I agree with Soulse that the kernels produced are ugly (although I struggle to put into words exactly what that means... Perhaps Uma Therman ugly ;-) ) Also, I found that it took ages to boot. Since one of the advantages of gentoo for me was boot time (although arch is quicker still) I quickly ditched it and rolled my own. As Soulse says, once you have your own .config - it's not exactly hard to recompile a new kernel...
