  1. I'm trying to roll my own kernel - which I've done loads of times before - this time using a 2.6.11 kernel. I'm using the config from a stock arch linux kernel (although I decided not to put this in other Linux distributions as no archers may have some ideas...) and I have only made a simple change to enable hfs and hfs+ filesystems I get the following error: drivers/media/video/saa7134/saa7134-dvb.c: In function `dvb_init': drivers/media/video/saa7134/saa7134-dvb.c:56: error: too few arguments to function `videobuf_dvb_register' Any ideas?
  2. If you only connected to the internet in Linux then why didn't you run a firewall? And why bother running one if you're not conencted in windows? (Although that may not be completely ridiculous because, as iphitus said, windows may well have been connecting without your knowledge...) You may be relatively safe from viruses on Linux, but not quite so safe from crackers - you need a firewall...
  3. It's up to you if you want to change the password - depends on how nervous you are that your system has been compromised - can't hurt I guess. Anyway if you su into root and enter: passwd it'll then prompt you for a new password and to confirm it
  4. quite possibly - in which case I suppose that all apps would have the same issue...
  5. Or, another question, does anyone know of any oher software that will encode into MP3 with support for ID3 tags at a decent quality? Having said, that I'm assuming most of them use lame - so I might get the same issues as I get with grip...
  6. I've been trying to rip some MP3's from my CD collection using grip. Ever since I turned on the ID3 tagging thing for encoding MP3s it's become ridiculously slow... I really want the ID3 tags because I'm hoping to get an ipod and I believe they use them, but it's taking over an hour to rip one track - if it even succeeds! Any ideas as to how I can improve on this...?
  7. I'm getting frustrated again - I'm gettin a stupid error with Eterm not starting it just says: Hit a key to exit... I think I'm running out of pty's or something. I'm a little bit more out of my depth bacuse I decided to use udev - which I want to stick with because it seems like the way forward (even though it isn't very old school ;) ) Sometimes it just seems too hard...
  8. This is not just for listening - but also creating music. It doesn't sound like MPD is for that...
  9. Is there a simple patch for this and, if so, where can I get it?
  10. It being too short may well be the reason it was never plugged in in the first place... Maybe it just can't be done unless you doctor the wire. On my computer there are connectors that allow you to use the front USB ports - but the cables are too short so I never plugged them in - it just happens that way sometimes...
  11. I'm looking for an Eterm background image called wintertree. The Eterm install I have only comes with a couple of backgrounds and I don't really like any of them all that much... If anyone has the file could they please attach it to a post of email it to me @ phunni@gmail.com? Thanks
  12. Some good points - on the whole I agree with you. I do think that one of the advantages of the Linux/Unix approach is that it really does make life easier for the power user - editign a text file or entering a command is cleaner, safer and easier than playing with a registry for example. But I also agree that the normal PC user should not have to worry about this in order to get their work done. Part of the problem imho is simply lack of industry support - there are so many tasks that wouldbe much easier to perform if there was better hardware/software support...
  13. It's probably also worth adding an environment variable called JAVA_HOME pointing to the root of your java install (in your case /usr/java/JavaSDK) - some applications will look for this...
  14. firestarter is very good - I've also used that in the past. It does really require you to use X though - which may be fine and, if you find shorewall pretty general, then you will find much the same in firestarter imho...
  15. The firewall anon recommended is good, I've used that - but I'm currently using arno's firewall which I would highly recommend...
  16. One of the things he may well miss doing audio editing in Linux is the plugins. You get no VSt plugins or instruments... YOu do get LADSPA (or something like that) but I don't think it has as many plugins available... No idea about plugging in soft instruments...
  17. Most of the music apps I've seen (for creating music, not listenting to it...) say that running them as root will improve performance - especially jack; which then also requires it's clients to run as root... Is there a reasonable alternative? Or a way to run them as root but minimise the risks/problems?
  18. Audacity or Rosegarden. Unfortunately there is nothing quite like Acid Pro or (even better) Ableton Live, but they might run with emulators. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Do not try an run audio software through an emulator - it will never be as good and may well simply not be up to the job. Latency can be a problem as it is...
  19. I jsut tried Fissy's advice and it doesn't quite work. You need to set up a class and then put your printer into it - this can be done via the cups browser interface. You can then point your windows "printer" to http://<servername>:631/classes/<classname>
  20. NOt sure exactly what you mean by a 2D array, but any Object (which includes an Array) can be passed via a simple method call - i.e.: myRecievingObject.setArray(myArray); BTW - you might be better off posting these questions in the programming section of the board in future... ;)
  21. To give a little more info. Whenever I try and start a job, the status changes from "idle, accepting jobs" to "parallel port is busy, will rety in 30 seconds" Not sure if that's relevant or not...
