    Cedega

me? Read again, I never said Cedega sucked. I said that you should convince me to stay to cedega instead of getting windows. I really really want to get a full Linux system. Away from Windows as much as possible. Now Call of Duty is going to be one of the first games that I'm going to get. That seems to be supported just fine by Linux/Cedega. A couple of other games are supported. But what do I do about those old games that I like? Like Black Hawk Down? Should I just try to install it to see what happeneds? Or I'm I doomed? Like I said, I didn't say Cedega sucks. Just that I'm not sure if I should be giving my money to a program that only supports games that most people want, not what I want.
  4. Which is why I've decided on the 6800GT :)
  5. Put the Austrlian crack pipe down iphitus and look a bit close next time ;)

I could try. We will have to wait and find out.

    Cedega

I don't care what version I get. As long as it plays games. I have win XP home right now and it doesn't bother me. It's fine, I run all the update tools and also all the Virus blockers. Don't have to worry about spyware as long as I use Firefox. For Cedega I might give it a try. I'm not sure, I'm not going down without a fight. I'm not going to judge it without trying it. So when I get the rest of my computer parts in and the computer is built. I would subscribe to cedega. Hopefully now that Guild Wars is over and done, with they turn all of their attention to BF2. That is really the only game that I want to play on windows. I looked over at some of the other games that I like, like Call of Duty, Medal Of Honor and games like that. Those are supported in Linux, so I can play those with Cedega. Just BF2 is the one that worries me. + I don't know how well Linux games run against windows ... like which one is better. Like I said, I would give cedega a try, to make sure I know it's not worth it for good. I'm just mad that some of the older older games like Black Hawk Down, which I would love to play isn't supported on Linux. BTW I'm going to be running ubuntu, don't know how much of a pain it's going to be to use the nvidia drivers from their website. Since ubuntu has the older ones in their reps. So is there someone that does gaming on Hoary Ubuntu?

    Cedega

I think I am going to end up getting windows. It shouldn't be very bloated since I'm buying it straight from windows. Or getting a copy that is from windows. Unlike getting it pre-installed on a computer it usually has the manufacturers programs and weird stuff which just adds to the bloat. I have searched the forums, and no one even mentions those games. All they mention is the hottest and new games, which they can't even play ;)

    Cedega

As some of you know I'm building a computer that is going to be for gaming. Now a question that bothers me a lot is whether or not I want to go Linux only, or dual-boot with windows for the games. Cedega does seem like a good program. But a lot of the games that I like are playable, but I can't really judge it because I've never had it. From the games database it seems like games like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, and BF have a 4 star or higher playability. But what does this mean? That you can play the game, but it has major/minor glitches? Certain parts of the game are missing? it's weird that Cedega 4.4 got released with Guild Wars and it only has a 2 star playability. There is a couple of games that I like that are actually supported in Linux. I've mentioned them on top. But what about those games that I LIKE that are not so popular. I can't play those because it's not the latest HOT stuff? That doesn't seem fair, and I seriously do want to give my money to a program that doesn't work for me. Now why spend about 5 or 30 dollars a month, when I can spend about 80 on windows XP and play games , any games for free and I don't have to worry about it not working? The only thing that scares me is that this is going to be my MAIN PC. This is the PC that is going to be turned on 24/7 my laptop will just sit around. So if this new computer is only for gaming, and windows is on it. I'm scared that windows is the only OS that will be booted. To me there is no sense of booting Linux just to use firefox and hang out in a chat room and then boot back when I want to play a game. So please convince me to pick one or the other. I just don't want to spend MY money for things that are not good for me. If cedega can support BF2 by the time I order the rest of my parts .. that's it. I'm going Linux only :). :o
  10. I don't like non of those games. Only WoW is the closets I will come to.
  11. Bah. Like Big D said up there. Seriously I don't want to pay money to play games that I don't like. Most of the games that I want to play are not supported by Cedega. So once again tell me why I would pay to play games I don't want? Anyhow I'm fixing on buying windows. Yes I know .. but it's only really for gaming. Linux is still going to be my main Desktop. Although I am a game addict so I'll really never have it booted ... j/k.
  12. You should have the option for " None ". Anyhow looks like I'm not going to be gaming on Linux. I seriously don't want to pay money to play games that I WANT. I could just buy windows or get it for free and play any game I want. Until Linux has a good improvement on gaming, i seriously won't be doing any gaming on it. I'll try out the Linux Clients if the game has it. Other than that, I doubt it.
  13. Yeah it supports 1000Mts or something like that, so I'm taking that is one GHz. Since i have to save up to the first of the month I get to upgrade a few things :) 1GB RAM Same Mobo eVGA GeForce 6800GT 256 PCI-e AMD64 3500+ Venice core 1GHz FSB I was going to get another Gig of ram, which I think I might. Because most of this stuff has like $50.00 worth of mail-in rebate. I wanted to save some money for games, but I think that should do it. 2GB of RAM, yummm
  14. Well I got some stuff that price never changes ... so that's good :). I'll be able to have the screen for quite sometime :) So I can actually start using the next resolution from 1024x768 Heck if I have the money I'll get a better video card :) Edit * Hey does anyone know what is better? Having the FSB intergrated into the CPU or having it out? LIke when I go to look at some CPU's it's says Intergrated FSB, or 1GHz FSB. The intergrated is faster or what is the deal? What's better?
  15. Open up a terminal window and type the following: xkill This will turn your mouse pointer into a little box with an X I believe, all you have to do now is click on the app that you want to close and it's done :)
  16. Well, once again my mother messes up my plans. I was counting on her to give me $250.00 dollars, she said that if i can raise the money she would do so. I was expecting the money by the end of next week, but now I have to wait until the end of this month. So I still have not ordered the CPU, RAM, MOBO, and the Video Card. Should I return all the other stuff, or just focus now on putting all the money that I get from here to the 1st of next month. All that money will go towards the 4 things that I have not received yet. Anybody think that is a good deal?
  17. DM once again another smart post. But even the old games that I like to play aren't even playable. WoW is a game that I'm looking into, another that I like very much is BF2. Now I now it's new and I know that Cedega will probably won't support it for quite a while, it's a hell of a game, i don't seem myself playing it soon. On the other hand it supports the regular 1942 battlefield games, which I will buy, I've only played them like 10 hours and then never touched them again. So they will be " Out dated " to some gamers, but to me it will be new, and I will enjoy them very much. Half of the games that I like ( mostly shooter ) are supported in Linux which is a good news. I don't think Linux gaming will get better faster, Until linux doesn't make it out to the world ( which I think it will start by being installed on the PS3) we will not see that much improvement. Since Linux is going on the PS3 game developers are going to mess around with it, and find it's beuties :). I personally think that is where it's going to start.
  18. Qchem is that dual-channeling? When you have 2 sticks of ram? I also thought it might be a tad bit faster, but I don't want to take up slots. It's 4GB max, so I could always just order 1GB and get another later. BTW This is what I'm ordering for now, because I have no patience. I'm going to be getting some other stuff in about 2 weeks. Maybe get another stick of ram since I can update it.
  19. what!? That's good news for me!
  20. I also changed the case, and got a seperate PSU like some of you suggested ( rosewill ) to be exact. Also found a heck of a lot better deal on the CRT. 97 dollars! It has all I need the .25mm dot pictch.
  21. Ok I just got done placing the order for something: Case PSU Hdd ( Stuck with the Seagate ) Monitor ( got a different one ) CD ( Did upgrade to the DVD-RW for about 45 dollars ) I changed a lot of the stuff that I just mentioned. If you want links just tell me I'll post them up later, I'm too tired and lazy right now.
  22. Thanks bvc. Well here it's different, everyone says that Maxtor is really good, and then everyone is #musb says that Maxtor is bad. So I'm in a tight lock here. I hear good things about seagates now ... I don't know but it seems that way. WD is a bit pricy, and haven't heard good stuff about their SATA drives.
  23. Thanks, I just want everything bundled together. The thing is that I like that case. I've see up close and I absolutely love it, and I wasn't able to find it without one. How come everyone is saying that the processor is bad? Will upgrading it to a 3200+ be better or what? As for the monitor Ix, it has a .25mm dot pitch. Which is Uber for games :). That's the cheapest that they have.
  24. So, as I read in forums this is one of the topics that people try and get help on their computer that they are going to build. Well some of them don't to research , but I did. For quite a long time now too :) I'll try to make the best out of this. Keep in mind that I'm on a budget of about $1,000 US dollars, and I'm upgrading some of these parts once Xmas comes around. Here we go: CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor Price: $146.00 Concerns: What distro I'm going to run, so far Ubuntu, Mandrake, and Fedora are on my list. Hopefully I can stick to Ubuntu. Link:Click Here Mobo: Albatron K8X890 Pro Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard Price: $105.00 Concerns: Just pretty much the Audio and LAN chipsets. Also I don't know how the VIA K8T890 work in Linux, but I've heard nothing bad about them. The sound chip which is the Realtek ALC655, seems to have some success. The LAN chip Marvell 88E8001, seems to work but people complain it drop connections very often. This isn't a problem since in about 2 weeks I should be getting a Wireless PC Adapter. Link:Click Here Memory:CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Price:$87.85 Concerns: Nothing much here, I hear that corsair is good. I think that's good memory right there. 1gb is good. Link: Click Here CD-ROM: LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM Price: $24.99 Concerns: Nothing much, I understand that IDE would be detected in Linux, lol. Just hint me if you have bad experience with the maker Lite-On. Might switch this for an LG Link: Click Here Hard-Drive: Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200 RPM 8M Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive Price:$91.00 Concerns: Nothing here, just hope that Ubuntu or all those other distros picks up the SATA 150 drive. I hear some people have trouble with them. Link: Click Here CaseSPIRE X-Navigator ATXA8NW-BK/500 Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply Price: $155.00 Concerns: Nothing much, looks like a good case. Not to mention how good it looks. 500W PSU is really good. Get good reviews from it. Link: Click Here Monitor ViewSonic G71f+B Black 17" CRT Monitor 0.25mm Dot Pitch 15-Pin D-Sub Price: $158.00 Concerns Just the maker, I hear that they are good makers. This is a part that might be upgraded when Xmas comes around. I'm very paranoid, and I don't want to deal with deal pixels for the first time! Link: Click Here Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N383-TX Geforce 6800 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card Price: $244.00 Concerns: Nothing :). Nvidia is all that matters :) Good good :). Link: Click Here So that's it guys, the system that is awayted to be build by me. So I'd really appriciate your help on this. This takes the price at around 1,031.00. With shipping + tymes recommended tool kit, it should even out at about $1,100.00. Which is not bad, my mom has already agreed to givng me the extra 100. so any rants about the parts, makers qand your personal view point will be very great. Thanks
