  1. Anyone care to comment on the benefits, detriments, and/or differences between Ubuntu and MDK2005LE? I finally have MDK the way I want it and Ubuntu just sent me some fresh CD's. I only have one computer to use for linux experimentation...my laptop. I'm itching to try Ubuntu. I just hope getting my ATI card working isn't any harder than what I learned with MDK. WoMBaT
  2. I sure do like that clock thingy...OH YEAH!, my wife said my Ubuntu just came in the mail Too bad I'm stuck in Louisiana and not at home this month... Well, it will give me something to play with over the holiday. I've just got MDK2005LE the way I like it...now I'm gonna scrap it all and try Ubuntu. Hopefully, I don't regret it. Maybe I'll start a new thread somewhere on the differences between the two before I make the switch. WoMBaT P.S. Missed the word "wife" in the first iteration of this post...must have been a freudian slip.

    Lock-ups

That keeps sound working; but this damn game STILL locks up soon after running. The sound chip is an AC'97 Realtek ALC650. It is using the intel8x0 by default. None of the logs have anything that looks related to the lockup because it is a TOTAL lock up. Nothing responds except the power button. I erased the contents of several logs; restarted the computer; started the game; locked up; and rebooted and looked at the logs...nothing that looks suspicious. Next? WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

I'm totally FUBAR now. I've tried so much stuff I can't remember what's what. I disabled the sound service in MCC, closed the panel volume control after turning off system sounds and event sounds. Rebooted and loaded Neverwinter Nights. Turned all sound down to zero and played for a LONG time with no lockup!! Re-enabled the sound service and then turned up the sound in the game. No sound still (weird). Did a reboot, started the game and after about 15 minutes it locked up! So, DEFINITELY a sound issue; I think. Now what do I do to isolate it and fix it? Come guys and gals help me out.
  5. I wonder if this has something to do with my laptop locking up totally after OpenGL gets going real good in a 3d Game. The lockup only happens during a graphic intensive process. WoMBaT

Thank you :) spinynorman. I did change the mouse to psaux in the xorg.conf and still have the lockup. I will try the adapter and see if that is the solution tonight. Also, how do you look at the logs and where are they located. Is there any specific log I should be looking at and anything specific in it? WoMBaT ( I'm such a noob...)

It still locks up. :( What can I do or where can I look to find out WHAT is causing the lockup specifically? WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

I turned off HT and still the computer locks up. What can I check or do to see what is causing the lockup. I have pretty much eliminated sound and HT, which leaves OpenGL I would think. That seems fine, though because OpenGL screensavers with work all night long with no lockups. Anyone know where and what to check to see what causes a COMPLETE lockup? There is no option except to hold the power button for 4 or more seconds and shut the machine down. WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

Unfortunately I don't. I've found some help on the web with Google last night, but have not been able to try anything yet today. WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

Yes, I am running in HT mode. Can I disable it in BIOS without messing anything up? I know that with Windoze there is a possiblity of having to re-install if you disable HT after installing with it running (at least that is what I read once...never tried it). Also, after some research I think it could be fast writes. How can one disable fast writes with Linux? I have no option in the BIOS. WoMBaT

I got farther into the game. It at least loaded and the adventure began. Something else is going on. I'm going to try and post my glxinfo and fglrxinfo output. Maybe some of you smart people can spot something I'm missing. I had sound disabled (or so I thougt) and still Neverwinter Nights had sound.??? I guess I did it wrong. How do you totally disable sound with Gnome? WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

Well I'm trying something out. This P4 in the laptop seemed to be getting awful hot, and I remembered that lock ups with Windoze could be attributed to excessive heat. So I opened this baby up and checked it out. There was thermal paste AND a thermal pad on the heatsink!!!!! Can you believe it? So I removed them both and cleaned it up and put on some Artic Silver. Well, there is less heat coming out of the heatsink vent so we will see. I am going to fire up ET or Neverwinter Nights and see if it locks up. All of the lock ups happened with the fan blowing full blast (thus my heat theory). WoMBaT

    Lock-ups

Hello all, This is a combination/repost of several others about my lockups. I think I have it narrowed down to the graphics card and OpenGL with my ATI. My computer locks completely up after a few minutes of OpenGL rendering. I had this orginally posted in the Games section because it was only happening I thought while trying to play Enemy Territory. However, I have since found out that the lockup happens even when I run fgl_glxgears. Here is what I have tried so far: With flgrxconfig I have selected Yes to "use dga", No and Yes to "use external agp" and No and Yes to "sync frame buffer to refresh", No and Yes to "locked user pages". The only thing that appeared to make a difference was the "sync to refresh". Of course that reduced all frame rates to 60 instead of the 400-500 I was getting. This only prolonged the time it took to lock up. I have disabled all sound drivers / daemons / etc so it is not a sound issue I don't think. What can I do to stop these lockups? Has anyone experienced similar? What else can I attempt to do to troubleshoot and isolate the issue? WoMBaT
