  1. Most likely, since it adds libraries (dlls) that substitute for DirectX along with some other stuff Wine doesn't have. A list of games that work can be found at http://www.transgaming.org/
  2. Medal of Honor and Half Life 2 both work with Cedega, as arctic's link will reveal :)
  3. I have the 3COM Gigabit LOM (can't get the exact model for you right now, unfortunately) on my ASUS mobo - but the chipset is also available on a PCI adapter. It has built in support in the 2.6 kernel tree, but the module you have to use is a little obscure, so I'll look it up for you if want... the set works better in Linux that windows - the doze driver is a little shabby.
  4. I was just about to mention the developers plugin for Firefox... and then I read your post :P I also use vim on my pages all the time. It's handy to get used to as you can ssh into web servers and make quick changes online (bad says protocol, but good says SoulSe). Bluefish, as iphitus mentioned, is probably the best editor I found in Linux, although... Quanta (if I remember correctly) was also pretty good. I liked Bluefish more for its CSS support. Running IE in Wine is also handy for testing pages if you're doing any commercial development.
  5. Hey, this is just the beginning - the source is out there, so it's only a matter of time before we have a decent project (or three) based on it...
  6. This is slsightly off-topic, but the use of Linux led to growth in my career in an unexpected way - I never worked with Linux, only played with it in my spare time. I have no computer qualifications whatsoever, but I was hired into the writing firm I work for now because of my knowledge of Linux and open source as they needed a writer to produce press writings and articles on the subjects. As for qualifications though, Certcity has touted the RHCE to be the most influential qualification to have in 2006 - I think that the RHCE, when combined with Linux+ (perhaps) is the way to go for Linux certification. For basic stuff, the OICDL (open ICDL) is pretty good - but all it teaches you is how to use open office and firefox really :P
  7. you could... we're all part of the greater open source community at the end of the day, there is no competition here. So wherever you find help is the right place ;)
  8. Cedega used to be called WineX - it's based on WINE and aimed specifically at gamers, but also runs many other Win apps. I could tell you all about it, or you could go here: http://www.transgaming.com/ or here: http://www.transgaming.org/
  9. There might be someone here who can help you, but the uber MythTV geeks live over here: http://www.mythtvtalk.com/
  10. This is great news. Lets hope it gives birth to some kick-ass apps based on that source...
  11. I also have the UK Gold edition. Here is the problem: It's called the 'Gold' edition, like the American one, but it isn't really - it's just a bundle pack of NWN plus the first expansion. So download Ravage's normal NWN installer and the seperate installer for the expansion and you're good to go ;) Post if you have any other problems.
  12. I used to subscribe to Cedega for gaming. Played Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft with it most recently. But I unsubscribed a couple of months ago. I used to use WINE to run Cooledit Pro (now known as Adobe Audition) but gave up as it never ran quite right. And that's about it, barring the odd GA or NES game - but that's emulation, not virtualisation...
  13. Cedega is subscription based at $5 a month - www.transgaming.com Not sure how much Crossover Office costs and WINE of course is free.
  14. I like memtest86 for memory forensics.
  15. I think it depends on what you want it for. For games, nothing beats Cedega really. For basic Win apps WINE is very good. For MS Office (and other things like Macromedia Flash) Crossover Office is the business. Right tool for the right job ;)
  16. I would start by disabling arts, as scarecrow suggested - if you're using KDE. To further help us - could you tell us what soundcard (or laptop) you have and if you made any changes to the default ALSA setup of Mndriva? Also, what DE / WM are you running (Gnome, KDE, etc.) and what version of Audacity?
  17. What is Een-Stall? I make Gentoo two year ago. Now me say "emerge sync && emerge -uD world" then me have latest system. Sometime me also have follow direction for point release. Then me type two more command or three. You complicate.
  18. Gentoo bashing seems to be the most pervasive open source sport right now :P Seriously, nobody is forcing anyone to use Gentoo - but for those who have been curious, the new installer is enticing. I like Arch, I used it for a short while, but went back to Gentoo. The way I see it, if I want a fully customised distribution, then why go halfway? If I wanted something quick I would use Ubuntu or Mandriva, but if I'm going to bother to build it from scratch (or near scratch, before the LFS guys jump on me), then I may as well do it properly by setting my own flags and compiling from source. Compile times have never bothere me - maybe it's time to trade in that PII scarecrow :P Jokes aside, the longest compile I had was around four hours, but it doesn't bother me. I usually do my emerge -uD world at night before going to bed - wake up to an updates system :)
  19. Before someone starts ripping into Ubuntu again... bah, nevermind. Why waste more breath defending it.
  20. Wow, they've been talking about this change for a while and it's good to see it here now. I like the fact that Gentoo can be installed easily and more people will now be able to enjoy this fantastic distribution. I'm going to reinstall just to see what the graphical installer is like. By all accounts it's very nice.
  21. Well done. It is a good feeling :)
  22. When you say 'desktop' do you mean Gnome? KDE? Other? That was most likely a feature of the Desktop Environment or Window Manager being used by those distributions, not necessarily the distros themselves (unless they specifically altered the DE / WM for customisation). So lets first find out which one you were using in those other distros and then we can help you get the same effect going in Mandriva.
  23. r-a-d Hopefully it'll include a lot of free (read: creative commons open license) music as well... open source is way of life, not just a way of linux.
